Balrogs have 'crunchable' wings...especially roasted on the fire! -e_H-

When we used to ask that question in the early days of the board (before folks got to the glugging stage with it) there was no way of keeping track with how many believed in the balrog wings. Glad to see my side is getting the majority of the votes!

But I went and ate curry garbonzo beans and curry chicken so I am fat and happy now. Not even misty mountain oysters, as good as they sound, can tempt me now.

It was dark, the Fellowship was scared out of their gourds, everything happened so fast, and then they were in shock and grief - later when they talked about it some remembered wings, others thought they were just shadows, but no one was very sure of anything.

Prior to reading this, my vote was with the sainted Reverend. In summary (from his famous post), "The transition between the early Balrog and the late Balrog is preserved for us in ink; the Balrog came into the room without wings and left with them. Don’t say Tolkien was too careful a writer to do this. Nazgul also recieved a radical upgrade over the course of the story; they just managed it off-stage."

If you look closely at the ROTK Balrog gargoyles in Mordor, they appear to be surrounded by a pair of wings. :] I checked out a book full of the art behind the ROTK movie, and these Balrog gargoyles are included. John Howe, who sketched them, said, in a funny little knowing fashion, "And yes, those are wings." I thought that was quite cute that Mr. Howe is putting his two cents in on the ever-lasting battle. :]

Proof from the book! Who can argue with that?! "...suddenly it drew itself up to a great height, and its wings were spread from wall to wall..." The Lord of the Rings II 5 "The Bridge of Khazad-dûm"
