I was not one of the fortunate to attend ComicCon, but I am planning to attend DragonCon. If one were to want to do a Radagast costume, what would be the suggested style hat one would wear? I know there was a glimpse of McCoy in the footage shown. I am not asking for more details than can be provided, but would a large brown hat similar to Gandalfs suffice? My husband has used Radagast as his badge/screen name since high school! Thanks for the advice

We know very, very little of Radagast's costume. Here are two speculation threads, where we've discussed what his costume and hat may be like (here and here. You might get some suggestions from these threads (not always serious suggestions ...). We've also had a thread on Radagast's costume after the latest vlog came out. But as you can see, it's very obscure. I'm sure whatever design you go for will be just fine! Make sure you take pictures of the finished product, and have fun at DragonCon!

I would go for a costume similar to the one he wears on the Decipher card. I think this hat would be appropriate for Radagast: http://cstm.mymiddleearth.com/2009/10/from-the-book-radagast-the-brown/

You're going to have such a BLAST at DragonCon! I went with my grandson a few years back, and he STILL talks about it... even at the "very cool" age of 17 ;) That makes me laugh about your husband using Radagast all these years! *high five* I think any hat and costume you put together would be fine... and you're idea of that hat or one like others have suggested from the card would also work. If you can, incorporate some signature items to identify him... even though he's not really well known YET... it would help people recognize your character. Like... the geeks will know that he's going to have unique hares/rabbits; so maybe have a stuffed, floppy rabbit in tow... but nothing that will hinder you. Maybe have a shoulder pouch like Gandalf has that's a bit bigger and have the bunny riding inside and hanging out over the top. It would also give you someplace to carry "stuff". Having that and maybe a small bird resting on the brim on your hat would show you're a nature lover. The most important thing is to make sure you're comfortable. Don't have an outfit that you're constantly adjusting or is too restrictive, and make sure it is easy to handle. The crowds are huge and you'll be doing a lot of walking and line-standing... so be as comfy as possible :) PLEASE let us know how it turns out. And, like Ataahua suggests, PICTURES WOULD BE COOL!!! :D Good luck!
I really need these new films to take me back to, and not re-introduce me to, that magical world.

I'm thinking in this style: http://www.history.org/.../jrinterpreters1.jpg I've seen this style suggested: http://www.yourfantasycostume.com/...al_lnc_cp_10_a_g.jpg but that seems most suited for keeping the head warm in cold castles and houses. A straw hat keeps out the sun and the rain (well made ones do) and seems suited for someone who treks about. I have a hat similar to the style in the first link that I decorated as a May Day hat. It is entwined with ivy, oak leaves, fern leaves, and flowers (all silk) and fastened all around it are twigs, grapevine tendrils, acorn on twig, mushrooms, a pheasant feather, bee, snail (complete with slime trail), lizard, frog, and cricket (all fake, of course). With perhaps fewer flowers and more birds - maybe even a nest - I think it would make a fine and striking Radagast hat. My hat is quite wide brimmed and the least breeze makes it sail off my head. So I have a firm strap on it that I cinch up with one of those tighteners that cinch up winter coat drawstrings. But if you're not outside, you probably won't need it. There are other styles of men's straw hats. I'm thinking one that looks both a bit peasanty (thus functional, as opposed to urban and decorative) and period. If you have a theater in town, you might be able to talk to the costumer and get suggestions for hats and where to buy them. Or any nearby historical site or society that does historic recreation.

I only included the LOTRO one because I was in a rush and assumed that everyone has seen it. Thanks for pointing that out.

I've not seen it before, and have never seen those behind-the-scene pictures! I really like the design of Radagast here - probably because it very wizard-like. I'd happily have him (and the wonderful staff) in The Hobbit trilogy. It's probably a good job they didn't have Radagast in the background somewhere in The Lord of the Rings - they would have had to keep the design and John Harding (not that it's a bad thing).

Thanks for the awesome ideas everyone! Got another question...Jackrabbits or Hedgehogs? It looks like the concept art on the wall but someone from Comiccon said the sled was pulled by hedgehogs. Or would he potentially have both around him?

Then you'll at least be aware of the difference between hare and rabbit and the look of the kind that live in England as opposed to Texas. I know the squirrels are different in England than in the US. I always think of Badgers when I think of England. But then, I'm one who thinks creativity shouldn't be bounded by trying to copy the movies. The character existed long before the movies and can be interpreted many ways. But I know I'm in the minority about that. It's clear most people who do costuming like a template to follow.

I got him around Halloween quite a while back. He sits and looks out the window at the other birds. I doubt you'll find a prop raven but most people wouldn't know the difference between a crow and a raven. I got mine at a hobby/craft store (Michael's if you have them near you). The sort of place that sells silk flowers, seasonal decorations, craft supplies, etc. He has some sort of solid (probably styrofoam) body with real feathers. You might try costume houses, too... since these could be used for party or theatrical costumes. A quick google image search showed one on Amazon but it's not as nice as mine. I would think a magpie would be more interesting... but there's not much chance of you finding a fake, prop magpie. :-)

I was particularly disappointed in the costuming of the fan films, the Hunt for Gollum and Born of Hope, which essentially aped the style of PJ's films. Don't let the films kill your imagination!

http://www.glyphweb.com/arda/miscanim.html Voles could be interesting. They're small. In the LOTR movies, Radagast was (very) loosely associated with a moth. He seems to me they are setting him up in The Hobbit movies as a bit eccentric. I think going for less mainstream animals could skew him looking more wizardly and other worldly than Doctor Doolittle-y. And if you go for a squirrel, make it an English Red Squirrel. Those things are way too cute for their own good. As far as we're concerned here, grey squirrels are rats in trees. But then, maybe I'd think the same about the English reds if they were trying to chew their way into my house. To be practical, in the end... it will be what you can find. I got all the little creatures on my May Day hat at Michaels (and similar type stores - before Michaels drove them all out of business), the craft/silk flower/seasonal home decorations store I told you about. I think whimsy goes a long way and sometimes whimsy is a bit hidden or takes some effort to find. People will see you across the room if you have a squirrel on your shoulder. But if they're talking to you and spy a cricket on your hat... it's more delightful, imo. I used to have these pocket frogs that peeped out of a pocket. They were like a largeish paper clip that slid onto a pocket or neckline of a shirt. The frog looked like it was crawling out or perched on the pocket. I've also taken plastic frogs, drilled a hole in the bottom and glued in a tack I could use with a pin tack jewelry finding I once had a spider (elegant granddaddy long legs looking thing) that had a pin tack on the back. I lost it though, and it was a heartbreak to do so. Those items were found at zoo or similar type gift stores or kid's toy stores. For me, it's the extra touches that make it. If you have a spider, use an old hair net to stretch out some webbing. If you have a snail, use something to create a clear, shiny slime trail. Put things on the robe including where people wouldn't expect them. I'd often put the frogs on the back of my shirt's neckline or the spider on the back of my shoulder. What could be clinging to the hem of a robe? Or coming out of the sleeve? And don't forget, Radagast is an outdoors guy. How can you incorporate leaves, twigs, acorns, etc into the costume or character. It could be a sly nod to Doctor Who to have a bag of acorns to offer to people (instead of jelly babies). I once left an acorn on a tip tray for a waitress (along with the tip) because I had one in my pocket and I thought she might like it. If you have buttons or clasps on the costume, make them natural in some way. I have buttons made of wood, slices of branches, nuts, antler, and stones. Plus there are button that look like acorns (like Bilbo's costume buttons) or some sort of animal. We have a high end fabric store here that has fantastic one of kind buttons. I got a large, cool abalone shell button for my Kinsale cloak. What will you carry your stuff in? A bag of some sort? Think of how to decorate that. Think of what could be clinging to that. I have the best luck and most fun when I create a character in my head and then think about inhabiting that character (or, in some cases... my doll inhabiting that character). I don't try to replicate someone else. I try to be someone else. Since Radagast is a fairly blank slate at this point, you have a lot room for play.

It's hard, because I have a lot of friends who go for replication and they derive great joy in it. And I think, when one is learning a skill, it can be easier to mimic while one is developing the skill, then branch out in individual, creative ways when the skill is acquired. But frankly, looking at someone else's attempt at replication is a bit boring. I've seen it before. I've probably seen it done better. I get that it's fun for the individual and going in costume to events like this is even *more* fun for the individual and probably for the community. (Look Bob... it's a Dalek) But in the end, I want to see people take inspiration from what they see and take it further. Or go off in their own direction from the get go. Or play with the concept in some clever way. I loved these ladies. And steam punk is full of original clever ideas even if the basic scaffolding of the style is there.

I have been pondering for a while how to do the costume and you all have been awesome. I agree that I don't want it to be a cookie cutter replica of the movie, I just wanted to be along the same lines. For instance, I don't want to have a Dumbledore or Gandalf wizard hat when it is clear he will not be wearing one anything like it. I am also not trying to duplicate his clothing. I am making a brown robe, but the template I am using is a robe I happen to already have. As far as the accessories I really have some direction and great ideas now. Will probably have some animals on him and his items, as well as 1 or 2 of us dressed as animals. I was planning to do a female hobbit costume for myself, but a squirrel following a brown wizard will my much more interesting and unique.
