Song parody: Fog on the Barrow-Downs (The Ramones, Pet Semetary)

Previously, I've posted a series of beach party / surf / California pop rock song parodies. Now we begin exploring the punk genre (primarily the Ramones, the Clash, and the Sex Pistols as the chief pioneers). This was largely and most recently inspired by a punk-related suggestion by Quacking_Troll. FOG ON THE BARROW-DOWNS (The Ramones, Pet Semetary*) Upon the hills past the Forest 'tis said Ancient evil wakes the dead Come ou’f the ground, they make a fell sound The smell of death is all around And the night when the cold wind blows No one cares, nobody knows I don't want to feel harrowed in the Downs of the Barrows I don't want a Wight inside my brain I don’t want to walk undead in the hills of the haunted I just want to have my life again. Cold be hand and heart and bone And cold be sleep under the stone Never more to wake on stony bed Never, till Sun fails and Moon is dead In the black wind the stars shall die And still on gold here let them lie! I feel cold to the marrow in the Downs of the Barrows I don't want a Wight inside my brain I won't be a dependent of a Carn Dûm descendant I just want to have my life again By water, wood, and sun-lit hill, I call for ol’ Tom Bombadil. His boots are yellow, his jacket bright blue, If he hears then you will soon be through. In the cairn with my friends laid out Hope he’s near enough so he might hear me shout…. Please come swifter than arrows to the Downs of the Barrows I don’t want a Wight inside my brain We'd been saved from the Willow thanks to Tom Bombadil-lo I sure hope he’ll save us once again Oh no Oh no I don’t want a Wight inside my brain Oh no Oh no I just want to have my life back again Oh no no no Don’t want a Wight in me, not again http://grooveshark.com/...Semetary+the+Ramones http://www.lyrics007.com/...matary%20Lyrics.html

Your genius never fails to disappoint! And punk songs are easy to play Sorry I took a while to notice, I always forget about "Main" **grabs guitar**

I'm not that familiar with the original song. Not a bad effort at all!

This was not one of their biggest singles, 'tis true. There is another Ramones parody down in the pipeline that you will probably know without having to look for the clip (but I always encourage having the clip running while reading the lyrics, as it was intended to be read). In fact, I'd expect the rest of the punk parody entries coming up to be way more recognizable than this.

The parody, that is - although the song's not too bad either! (Can you tell that I'd never heard it before?) Awesome working in of the words, I'm amazed at how the rhyme actually fits in. I wonder if there were any "pets" in the Barrow-downs?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "I desired dragons with a profound desire" "It struck me last night that you might write a fearfully good romantic drama, with as much of the 'supernatural' as you cared to introduce. Have you ever thought of it?" -Geoffrey B. Smith, letter to JRR Tolkien, 1915
I'll admit it, it was a total accident that it turned out that way, the rhyme fitting like it did (with a nip here, a tuck there). I had picked the song only because I was looking for something by the Ramones to modify for Tolkien as part of this punk series. The fit was an exciting find. Discovering fits like that are part of why I enjoy writing and posting these. It's almost like the song was "meant" for a Tolkien-related parody. I don't know about Barrow-Downs pets, but if so then would they like to chew on bones? Or would that be considered cannibalism? Thanks again!
My parody song: Fields of Pelennor
I had written this a long time ago (it's possible it's on the old TORN boards!), but for a lark I recorded it yesterday. To the tune of "Winter Wonderland" I present to you Spamwise Hamgee and the Sons of Hobbiton, singing "Fields of Pelennor" Orcs are near, can you hear them? Nazgul fly, do you fear them? The battle is nigh, tonight we will ride fighting on the fields of Pelennor. Gimli’s axe – it is ringing. Legolas’ bow – hear it singing. A beautiful sight, we’re winning tonight fighting on the fields of Pelennor. In the rubble they have built a tower and they move it closer to the wall. Denethor is raving like a madman but with Gandalf here we know we’ll never fall. Later on we’ll perspire as we clash in the fire. There’s victory tonight, everything is all right fighting on the fields of Pelennor. Rider’s horns, they’re a-blowing, as they charge with the king of Rohan. They’ll take out their foes with lances and bows fighting on the fields of Pelennor. Orcs are near, can you hear them? Nazgul fly, do you fear them? The battle is nigh, tonight we will ride fighting on the fields of Pelennor. In the meadow rides the king of Angmar. He has slain Rohirrim’s mighty lord. He will meet his end in fire and anger cause it ain’t no man who’s gonna wield that sword. Gone away is dear Frodo. He went where none of us would dare go. With Sam at his side everything is all right so we’re fighting on the fields of Pelennor. (if you want to hear it, gods forbid, the linky: http://hardhobbittobreak.com/?p=229)
Parodies posted as a reply are always welcome in my parody threads. You're my first; I wish I got more of that. I would have liked it even more if it had contained a response with feedback to my parody in my original post, though. Absent that, it might be considered a form of thread-hijacking. You have the option of posting a new thread.... I liked your parody, well wrought and scans great with the source song. I especially liked your rhyme of "blowing'" with "Rohan" i haven't had a chance to check out your link, i mean to as soon as i can. I also have done a Christmas related parody that covered similar subject matter incl. Pelennor: http://newboards.theonering.net/...?post=411603;#411603 i'd welcome your feedback.
Actually i was going for QuaTro as in quatro, like el numero cuatro the number four or Suzy Quatro the rocker. My real name is Mike. Not to disparage your manly aesthetic appeal, but you won't get me call you "QT"/"cutie"  i'll just use "Q" if that's ok.
I'm sorry, I was just so overwhelmed with joy at seeing other hobbity songs set to earth's music I ended up being very rude and unhobbity. I am sincerely sorry. I don't know the music of the ramones, so I can't speak for that, but my favorite line of your verse is the in-line rhyme
I won't be a dependent of a Carn Dûm descendant The rhythm and flow is so powerful there. I love it. I'll check out your other thread now!
I saw it. It was really good. I saw a couple of nitpicky little things at the beginning that threw me off, but as it went, it grew more dense, and full of life and imagination, while staying true to the original verse. Masterful! My comments didn't bump the thread to the top, though, so no one will see them. Alas.
I can relate to the joy of seeing another Hobbity parody. Glad to find and to be found, dclary. We're good here. Welcome to the boards! Thanks for picking up on that line. Ethel Duath gave mention to that same line in her reply earlier, it so happens. I hope you'll check out the other parodies I have posted here. Many can be accessed by my link below, in my sig. There are a few other Christmas ones, though not Pelennor related.
