Gimli/Galadriel was never a real romance to start with. She was already married, and Gimli saw her more in the light of a glorious gem, like a fantastic treasure of an elf, rather than actual romance (at least that's the way I interpret it). This might be a subtle way of exploring that further, perhaps more deeply, or as you said, she doesn't give two dragons scales about him.

Should Thorin be doubting himself?

Armitage claims that Thorin has many self doubts, but I never got that sense from the book. Mind you it is a children's tale, and maybe the writers are exploring his rashness as a result of overcompensating for feelings of unworthiness. It's not quite Aragorn's story, but it's close. Maybe this has been discussed before, but I only joined TORN recently. Anyone has any opinions?

Galadriel and Gandalf is something I would never guessed. That's a bingo from Peter Jackson Have fun, fanfics writers XD My bets are Tauriel-Legolas, Tauriel-Thorin (I have seen Thorin-Tauriel fanfics already, that can be one of the hottest), Thorin-Bilbo, Bilbo-Tauriel, maybe Bilbo-Legolas (Why not, slashs have no limits) will be the most juicy shippings, Kili and Tauriel join the list... Oh dear.

I think we may be making mountains out of mole-hills here. You can see how much attention has been paid to a tiny snip of a quote. But I also think PJ capable of anything, so we'll see. But before you all get up in arms about having to sit through the Kili/Tauriel love scene, re-read that bit about "I guess he knows nothing can ever happen".

What might the point be, beyond the obvious..

Now I know this is completely pointless, but I can't stop myself... I'm trying to find some sliver of reason beyond the "we must have romance somewhere" for why Kili gets burdened with elf infatuation. And all I can think of is that it sets him on a course to be more inclined to agree with Bilbo about coming to peaceful terms with Thranduil and Bard over who gets a piece of the mountain. The book does say that Kili, Fili, and Bombur had sympathy for Bilbo's point of view, but they couldn't bring themselves to speak against Thorin. IF movie Kili shows an obvious slackening of the typical dwarf xenophobia, via an appreciation of Tauriel (in whatever way that comes across) then I can totally see him do more than shuffle his feet and look at the floor when it comes time to decide a course of action. We might see some interesting verbal sparks between uncle and nephew.

I can see it happening. Only in a platonic way, of course... This would be a love triangle, if we add Legolas in the mix, lol. Naw, I don’t see Legolas going for Kili. Legolas is much too young for that sort of thing. :)
…all eyes looked upon the ring; for he held it now aloft, and the green jewels gleamed there that the Noldor had devised in Valinor. For this ring was like to twin serpents, whose eyes were emeralds, and their heads met beneath a crown of golden flowers, that the one upheld and the other devoured; that was the badge of Finarfin and his house. The Silmarillion, pp 150-151 while Felagund laughs beneath the treesin Valinor and comes no more to this grey world of tears and war.The Lays of Beleriand, p 311

At websites like this one, as far as I have noticed (informally) over the past years since the films were released. I have not had sufficient conversations with viewers that do not frequent such message boards to make such a statement about their views...

Thranduil and Bard. They will become major victims of The Hobbit romance fanfics writers too. I see it: Thranduil-Thorin, Thranduil-Tauriel maybe Thranduil-Bilbo Ships like Kili-Tauriel and Legolas-Tauriel are for teens. I also bet on Kili-Fili I hate shippers

They exist in the same film, they'll find a way to ship them. Some will be more popular than others(and you are so right about Kili-Fili, I mean Dean/Sam is one of the biggest things going and they are brothers(Supernatural), so I'd actually bet on a LOT of Kili/Fili) but there will be examples of all of it if you know where to look.

I ship Thorin and the Arkenstone Hey why not, I've heard of weirder things being shipped. Depending on how big the stone is....OK let's not go there, I'm sorry. Makes more sense than a car, though, imo Even if Baby is the most consistent relationship in Dean's life. :) (I'm a total gen fanfic reader myself, on the rare occasions I do, leave the romance/sex stuff out of it, no matter what gender the participants).
