Not that it matters, but you r nick was one of my all-time favorites. *has deja vu* I think I posted this somewhere already. What the heck. *clicks "Post Reply"*

I often want to criticise Jane Austen, but her books madden me so that I can't conceal my frenzy from the reader; and therefore I have to stop every time I begin. Well, probably not. But when I first joined the boards 4 years ago, I was dj'ing goth/industrial music under djdeathskiss, and was too lazy to come up with a 'LotR' name, so I just used that. I don't dj anymore, and don't feel much like a 'deathskiss', so over time it's been shortened to 'deej'.

Penthe, from Ursula le Guin's Tombs of Atuan, is one of my favourite minor characters of literature. She is warm and friendly, not especially ambitious and would rather sit around chatting and eating than anything else. She quite possibly ends up a high priestess, so she's a good role model for someone as lazy and gluttonous as me. Plus it sounds a bit like my real name, so I wouldn't forget it easily, which is something I did several times in early online experiments. There's something too, too tragic about a poster who cannot remember her own name. I don't know how to pronounce it, and I quite like that it only exists in text form.

I signed up at TORN in 1999, which was early enough to snag a good Tolkien name. Idril Celebrindal was a female character who I liked from The Silmarillion; I also liked how the name sounded. I post under other nicknames in different forums (and my real name in one or two), but Idril Celebrindal is my favorite nick out of all of them. That's why I resumed using it when I returned to the boards recently. I toyed with the thought of starting over with a new nickname, but I knew a lot of people would still remember Idril Celebrindal from when I hung out at TORN a few years ago and liked the idea of stepping back into that identity.

I used one of those and found my "elf" name to be Luinfalathiel. Since it translated to "Daughter of the Blue Coast", and I'm from Vancouver BC (with lots of sea and distant, "blue" mountains and clouds), I kept it. Even engraved it on my ankle. :)

Magpie... because life is full of bright, shiny things
[In reply to]

I was given the label Magpie by my husband because of my incessant collecting of things:
- rocks
- feathers
- bark
- grapevine tendrils
- shells
- seed pods
- acorns
- pine cones
- Viewmaster slides
- advertising fans from the State Fair
- wooden handled kitchen tools
- rooster kitchen ware
- folk dolls, mostly small ones: wooden, ethnic, and/or handmade
- game pieces
- paper ephemera: bridge tallies, gummed labels, old postcards and greeting cards
- Golden Books
- joker cards
- small glass salt shakers
- tins
- marbles
- vintage sewing supplies
- bird figurines
- old celluloid fountain pens
- bits of broken jewelery, beads, and buttons.
But the bulk of my collection is stuff that can't be categorized in any way but 'stuff a Magpie would pick up'. On a bulletin board I have pinned up: an old large clip advertising a company, a little red Pegasus from a Mobil station, a pixie charm from Cornwall, a big red plastic butterfly pin, skeleton keys and brass hardware from a drawer. And on my kitchen window sill is the little glass perfume bottle stopper that I brought home, all excited, saying to my husband, "Look what I found." It was then they he said, "Marilynn... you are such a magpie." But I also collect bright, shiny information: What birth order are you? Did you have to wear gym suits in gym? How old were you when you first read LOTR? What's the meaning of the word Attercop? And what phrase connects Morris Dancing to The Hobbit. I like the name Magpie and I think it suits me because life is full of bright, shiny things. And my real initials are MMM and I live in Minneapolis Minnesota. So I kind of got the M thing working.

If you haven't seen it, Dory, the fish with short-term memory loss, keeps referring to Nemo as Elmo, Bingo, Fabio, etc. I kept waiting for her to call him Frodo or Bilbo, but she never did. Anyway, that's how I thought of my name.

All of those are caught up in the same basic concept, I think. I'm fascinated with it, although I haven't done extensive research. I mentioned in my post that I collect Joker cards. For a class, I did a bobblehead of myself on joker body.I used to make these little fairy dolls and I often made jokers. Their baubles would have little acorn heads and little flower petal neckpieces. The fairy would have an acorn cap hat with a twirly grapevine tendril coming out and a striped trade bead at the end. I would also put the beads at the end of each point of the neckpiece for the fairy. And I used to Morris Dance, which has the character of 'the Fool'. I once read a book that had a Native American version of the 'clown' who's job it was to keep people from getting to big-headed and puffed up by mocking those characteristics. (See...it's the Magpie thing... I can't stop making connections with useless, but bright, shiny pieces of info.) I'm not too fond of mimes...and clowns really bother me to the point of tears sometimes. But I'm still fascinated with the concept as awhole and would love to learn more. Here's a cartoon I really like:
And, lastly... my son heckled a mime once when he about 4. I thought the mime deserved it.

I knew I didn't want a name that reflected elves or elvish or wizards or the valar. I'm just a simple person who enjoys simple things, in many aspects, a hobbit. On that end, I went looking for a hobbity name that reflected something of me. (I like to use some form of my own name any time I create an online persona.) Since there is nothing hobbity about my first name (Rebekah), I decided to go with my middle name, Dawn. I got close enough there, with Morrowdim, hobbit word for the twilight of dawn. When I saw that name and description, it felt comfortable, like it just fit.

As a latecomer to the Internet when I went looking for a LOTR nick all the ones I wanted were taken. I could not accept being Ioreth 468, so I went mirror image. Then the group at the original Netscape LOTR site (the one the official movie page sent you to for community) wrote a parody (still available on stupidring.com) in which Pig-Latin was used for Elvish and mirror writing was used for Rohirric. When a virtual inn was formed for role playing, I didn't think to create another name for my character there. Thus Sevilodorf, a Rohirrim widow, my alter ego was born. She however leads a much more interesting life than I do. Having traveled to Near Harad, Dunland and the Eastern borders through a series of fanfics. (blatant self pluggery.)

Yay! When I first came online to TORN I spent ages trying to get a name I wanted. I dont remember my first choice - but eventually ended up with the Necromancer. Then I went awol for a while because of my computer. When I came back I couldn't remember my password, and thought I need a name change anyway ... I tried for Elven ... but it was gone ... so I chose Elvenesque ... there were a few 'esques' around at the time ... Since I couldnt get the name I wanted here ... I have it on another couple of sites which are not Tolkien related, but it always gets some response from other LOTR/Tolkien fans ... which has been great!! people have gone out of their way to sent me 'Elvish' happy Birthdays and bits and pieces - its really nice. But I finally got the name Ive been wanting for ages ... I mean I've been signing off Elven here on posts for a while - the 'esque' bit was just toooo much . You should have seen me "fear bound" trying to type 'Elven' into the New Board register - then the computer crashed - I couldn't get back here quick enough
"Never wash your name in hot water Elvenesque - it shrinks!" said the Gaffer. "lucky it still fits if you be askin' me."
