Radagast concept art and Beorn test shot -- SPOILER Can't Post

I stumbled across this late last night.

Some bright spark over on French forum Allocine.fr was recently hunting through the fifth official video blog (the one released in December) and discovered at around 2 minutes and 2 seconds in a sweep shot of one of the WETA offices that there are a bunch of pictures on the wall in the far background.

Obtaining a high-res version, and blowing it up, this is the result:

Said clever poster reckons that it's concept art for Radagast the Brown. My French is not so good (meaning i have none), but here's the original post.

I was discussing this on TORN's chat earlier, and JennieArcheo who i believe also posts here mentioned she thought that the bearded fellow below and to the right could be a test shot for Beorn. I think that's not beyond the realms of possibility.

Never noticed that big concept art of some sort of deer/goat to the left! [In reply to] Can't Post

Looks like Radagast might have a companion with him.

The one that might be Beorn does slightly look like Persbrandt smiling.

No, there's no pronounced antlers. [In reply to] Can't Post

Of course, it could be an immature jackalope...

Could it be a haggis? Any idea how big the ears are, on those?

Depends if it's a highland or coastal breed. [In reply to] Can't Post

The highland haggis has smaller ears to reduce heat loss.

also the legs- [In reply to] Can't Post

not that we can see them properly, but the legs of the highland variety are of different lengths because of the hill sides.

With this larger and clearer image it's pretty clear it's a macropod. No way it's a cervid.

Makes one wonder, did they draw him with a wallaby for the sake of lulz, or are they really going to be give him a marsupial sidekick... that'd mean some really interesting new internet discussions. Can't wait. Tongue

Apart from other humanoids [In reply to] Can't Post

And other, mythologically-based evil entities (wargs, dragons, goblins, wraiths, kraken-like things, nameless beasts, balrogs), there are no "made up" creatures in Middle Earth of the fauna sort. Middle Earth should reflect our world, in that respect. Alien animals are about as far away from the spirit of Tolkien as I can imagine, and I doubt PJ would go that route.

My guess is that it is a large hare.

like you said. Could always be a "nameless beast" though Wink

I have no idea anyway. If it is just concept art it may not even make it into the film/s.

Does Radagast like trees? [In reply to] Can't Post

I stumbled across this quote from Treebeard while re-reading TTT. (In response to Merry asking whether Treebeard knows Gandalf) "Yes, I do know him: the only wizard that really cares about trees, do you know him?"

I was wondering what this might say about Radagast. Maybe he lives in a wooden hut.

But that quote [In reply to] Can't Post

refers to Treebeard talking about Gandalf. Not Treebeard talking about Radagast? It doesn't say anything about Radagast does it?

Don't think it's a hat [In reply to] Can't Post

Quint, I believe, described Radagast as heaving a head (or hair) full of twigs and such. My guess is that the protrusions you see are branches, or some such over-the-top kind of thing. I highly doubt they would give a wizard the same sort of head gear as one of the dwarves. That wouldn't jive with PJ's determination to make each character obviously distinct.
