Nicholas Cage Was Almost in LOTR...
|

|
Allanon sends this along: Here is a link to an Empire interview with Nicolas Cage. He mentions that he turned down a role in The Lord of the Rings. terrence green says: "I'm sure you have turned down films in the past, but is there one that you have thought "Damn, I wish I took"? NC: The only reason why I tend to pass on a movie is either I don't think I'm right for the material and can't play it honestly, or because of time constraints with personal things in my life. There were two movies that asked me to go to Australia or New Zealand for long periods of time. One was Lord Of The Rings and one was the Matrix. But I was actively involved at that time raising my family and I couldn't really take that time out. Full Transcript

He was offered the role of Aragorn. He was also offered the roles of Neo and Superman as well, though of course neither of those were in Lord of the Rings.
****************************************** From IMDB trivia: "A scene was cut from the finished film that showed Eowyn (Miranda Otto) stripping away her regular clothes and then dressing herself in the armor of a Rohan warrior." *Darkstone bangs head against wall*

based on everything I've seen him in I can't picture him playing any charactar in Tolkien's world.

Cage doing the scene of Aragorn falling to his knees when he thinks Merry and Pippin are dead in that style. Would have been classic! Strange to think we could of had LotR films starring Cage and Connery, what a nightmare!

Cage goes mental a lot!!......
"I would draw some of the great tales in fullness, and leave many only placed in the scheme, and sketched. The cycles should be linked to a majestic whole, and yet leave scope for other minds and hands, wielding paint and music and drama" ___________ Let us then continue Tolkien's Legendarium!

I have gone through all of TORn's archives from the inception of the site (around April 1999) to the release of FOTR. And I guess I have two thoughts: ONE: I think some actors refer to a 'role they turned down' when it's more like 'I chose not to pursue it'. It really means about the same thing, I'm sure, to them and sometimes a simple answer - even if slightly misleading - is what works best for light interviews. I'm not sure we can assume that Cage was offered the job or that he even read for it. I think there are many steps in the process of a major or well-known actor getting a part and we don't know how far Cage made it in this process. TWO: As I said, I've looked through all the archives for a two year period leading up to FOTR and Cage was not mentioned once. That isn't proof of anything but back then, info leaked in a much more free manner than nowadays. Michael De Luca was emailing fans, for crying outloud, and answering their questions and dropping hints. AICN dropped lots of hints.. some which panned out and some which seemed to take a different turn before official confirmation could get made. I can't say AICN never talked Cage... but TORn was keeping good track of what other people and sites were saying and they never reported it if AICN did. So, I would skew this comment as 'Cage decided against the job before anyone on the production site ever got serious about him'!

He would have loved to run screaming and burning from his pyre. LOTR, The Film would have been dead to me. (Am I being over-dramatic?) I think Magpie is right, though.

In the commentaries, PJ says that another actor was chosen to play Aragorn but they let him go & brought in Vigo... Is that Nicholas Cage? Excuse me if I'm not up on things. BTW: I think it's just like any great movie roll...... We are just so used to seeing the chosen actor, we can't imagine he was the 2nd, 3rd, even 4th or 5th choice. Like: Charles Laughton over Alex Guiness in Bridge on the River Kwai (there were so many fat starving POW's, lol) Dinero shot for Michael Corleone & Al Pacino for Sonny in Godfather Part One Copella had to insist on Marlon Brando for Don Vito. Some of the names mentioned were: Danny Thomas, Frank Sinatra (I bet he loved the horse's head scene) & get this: Danny Kaye, The Court Jester! The old story is Ronald Reagan was announced for Casablanca, but he was never offered the role. Either was george Raft: He'd turned down too many rolls that Bogart had gotten by then & made Bogart a star. But, it's really interesting how these things work out... Finally, Adam West, TV's Batman, WAS offered the roll of James Bond in 1968, but turned it down, saying an Englishman should play Bond. An Australian named George somebody got it & bombed. Connery returned for several more movies before that other English dude stepped in.

One would have to wonder about the sanity and taste of the casting director... Given that most of the casting was rather well done, my guess is that he simply decided not to audition for it. I seriously cannot believe he was offered it.

It was Stuart Townsend, a much younger actor. He rehearsed for two months and then was replaced just before filming began - not a happy situation, evidently. It was decided that someone older was needed for Aragorn, according to reports at the time.

Who's Stuart Townsend? Peter Townsend's nephew?
As you might tell from my post, my movie tastes tend to run towards TCM, not the CGI-driven dribble that Hollywood poops out these daze. Although I think I'll manage to take in The Hobbit when it comes out. ...But eack time King Kong's been done, it's gotten worse to be quite fair too.

collected from news archives from April 1999 to roughly Dec 2001 (some reports are from a later time but I have not thoroughly scoured the news archives for the time after Dec 2001) Some of these were misunderstood statements from the actor. Some where wishful thinking on the fans parts. Other reports were more substantial and probably indicated serious talks between the actor and producers.
