LA Times Hobbit article with a great new picture

The article does not appear to offer anything especially new, but I've not seen that fantastic picture of Bilbo with Sting before! All can be found at the Los Angeles Times website (and I'm sorry, I can't seem to make the embed code work): http://herocomplex.latimes.com/2012/01/14/the-hobbit-an-unexpected-journey-new-photo-peter-jackson-martin-freeman/ Excerpt: “The story is very much a children’s story so deciding how to tell this was one of the first things we had to do,” Boyens said in a phone interview right before Christmas. “Who is the audience? It is very distinctly different, tonally, to ‘Lord of the Rings’ until the very end and then you begin to see the world of Middle-earth opening up… but, having said that, we felt that it is the same audience [who will come to see the films] and then you start to worry because it is easy to repeat yourself. It is quite a similar journey, you’re going from the Shire to a large, dangerous mountain.”

So we can confirm that Sting does not have the lettering when he finds it, but does have that beautiful detail :) It's amazing to see such high definition images! He looks filthy and PERFECT as Bilbo Baggins!

we felt that it is the same audience [who will come to see the films] That confirms how I thought they'd approach the Hobbit. This Bilbo looks to be more of a fighter than his younger kin. (I wonder if this is a Mirkwood scene - I can't see this guy singing 'Lazy Lob...') He did tone down the some of grimness of his adventures for his audiences.

To the right of the picture, it looks like the remains of a spider (I see eyes and spidery legs).
As he had feared, orders had been forgotten and everyone had brought the potato salad.

Note the remains of cobwebs on Bilbo, and the filth on him, as if he has just been engaged in battle, and his speaking to his weapon: " 'I will give you a name,' he said to it, 'and I shall call you Sting.' " Thank you for this article, ejayye!

It's amazing to see all the details in this picture tell us so much about what is hapenning at that moment. Bilbo looks fierce!
Never ask an Elf for advice, for he will say both 'Yes' and 'No'.

And it certainly appears to be the "naming of Sting" from the book...nice.
My Top 5 Wish List for "The Hobbit" 5. Legolas will surf down Smaug's neck 4. Bilbo will be revealed to a Robot 3. Naked PJ cameo as Ghan-Buri-Ghan 2. Use not only 3D, but smell-o-vision, with axes coming out of the seats and poking the audience when appropriate 1. Not only keep the claim that Thorin & Co. ran amok in Mirkwood "molesting people", but depict said incident in vivid detail!!!!!

Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..." Dwarves: "Pretty rings..." Men: "Pretty rings..." Sauron: "Mine's better." "Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded b*****d with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak. But what a great picture! I think he looks like Pippin there. In a way their journeys are similar - from fun-loving, to fearful and then to ferocious. Bring it on!

Given the much simpler character arc in the Hobbit, and given that Tolkien very helpfully explains that Bilbo is going through important moments, I think PJ, Fran and Philippa will have less room for misinterpreting Bilbo's journey. If this scene happens when I think it does, Bilbo's look seems just right.
