FOTR 10th Anniversary Party: Song Parody Puzzle Challenge #1
|
Can't Post
|
|
GREETINGS Ladies and Lords, TORnsibs and TORnadoes, One-Ringers and All-Ringers, Tolkienists, Tolkienistas, Tolkfolk, and other variants thereof, administrators and administrat-ees, and those who defy labeling OF ALL AGES, As The One Ringer posted earlier this morning, we are celebrating the 10th anniversary of LOTR:FOTR premiere. We’re already warmed up (or you’re if not, there’s still time to check out the “WARM UP ACTS” that I posted yesterday, earlier in this forum). The time has come to do what we can with the time that is given to us, and precisely when we mean to. That is, right now! And so it is my privilege to call to Stage One our first headliner act of the (day, evening)! Let’s put it together for the amazing [BLEEP] I gotta stop doing that. I forgot to tell you, this is a Song Parody Puzzle Challenge I like to call “NAME THAT TUNE & GUESS/COMPLETE THE LYRICS” EDITION! Here’s how it works: OBJECT Guess the missing sections. Naming the tune is not the object, but may help significantly in guessing some if not all the missing sections. See also ALTERNATE “CREATIVE” VARIANT below. RULES Open-book, open-internet. BONUS POINTS Post a recording of yourself musically performing the song with your “guesses” is encouraged and will be rewarded. ALTERNATE “CREATIVE” VARIANT Rules schmules! Fill-in-the-blanks as you see fit, amusingly or otherwise astoundingly. And now, give it up for . . . BOROMIR’S SONG or MINAS TIRITH 1, 2, 3 Turn it up Gold [missing section 1] got me yearning Carry it home to help my kin [Missing section 2] Realm I miss my city once again Have you ever seen it? Well, I asked [missing section 3], this Ring of Power, Could be something to carry down, Well, Lord [missing section 3], he dissented. We Southern Men don’t need him around anyhow. [Missing section 4] Minas Tirith Banners high in the blue [Missing section 4] Minas Tirith M’[missing section 5] With [Missing section 6], my father Denethor (Boo! Boo! Boo!) His rule is failing, what to do? His [missing section 7] on Shadow bordering. Does its closeness bother you? Tell the truth. [Missing section 4] Minas Tirith Pearl spikes pierce the blue [Missing section 4] Minas Tirith M’[missing section 5] Here I come, mah Daddy. (Ah ah ah Mah Daddy, ah ah ah Mah Daddy, ah ah ah Mah Daddy, ah ah ah Mah Daddy) Now muscled [missing section 8] have got the [missing section 9] And they’ve been known to eat a babe or two (Yes, they do!) M’Lord, they’ve shot me up so much I toot my horn when I’m feeling blue, now how about you? [Missing section 4] Minas Tirith Trumpets sound through the blue [Missing section 4] Minas Tirith Mama, [missing section 10] [Missing section 4] Minas Tirith, oh, [Missing section 4] Daddy [Missing section 11] [Missing section 4] Minas Tirith, Daddy Mama, [missing section 10], yeah yeah (My [Missing section 12]'s got the answer) CLUES Each letter of the alphabet is replaced with “x” except where the letter revealed as a clue; punctuation, spaces, and capitalization remain intact. Additional clues are in parentheses. Missing section 1 = xxxxx (from the source lyrics) Missing section 2 = Xxxxxxx xxxxx xxxxx xxx Xxxxx (from the source lyrics) Missing section 3 = (proper noun) Missing section 4 = Xxxxx xxxx (from the source lyrics) Missing section 5 = Xxxx, X'x xxxxxx xxxx xx xxx (from the source lyrics) Missing section 6 = xxxxexxx xxxxs (sounds like the source lyrics) Missing section 7 = xxxxxfxx xxzx (sounds like the source lyrics) Missing section 8 = Xxxx Missing section 9 = Xxxxxxxxx Missing section 10 = Missing section 5, minus the first word Missing section 11 = Xxxxe txxx, xxxlx xx blue, with cxxxx xxx xxxxs too Missing section 12 = Xxxxxxx The Clues, and the parody lyrics as shown, are your friends. Even if you don’t guess the parodied song, you still have other ways of guessing at least some of the Missing Sections, which in turn helps you guess the parodied song. I will try to keep up throughout the day, but I may not be able to respond immediately as I have a full workday today. I expect to be active at the latest by 9 pm EST tonight. Good luck, enjoy, have fun, and happy FOTR 10th anniversary!

Sorry, about the exclamation marks, but this has been niggling at me for about an hour, and I think I finally have it. It was the 'southern man' bit that gave me the clue. Highlight below; Sweet Home Alabama By the way, these are great; having once done one or two parodies of my own, I am in awe.

If you know the tune then you're well on your way to filling in the Missing Sections! (Naming the tune alone doesn't end it) but good news: correctly guessing the tune means having enough info to figure out most of them! BTW i'm looking out for a list of numbered answers, e.g., 1._____, 2._____, etc. OR you could cut/paste the lyrics and then complete it by filling in the missing parts. The reason why this is about Missing Sections rather than merely naming the tune is that, even if ppl don't know the tune, it still allows ppl to make guesses based on the available information, such as the clues, and the context of the shown parody-lyrics. That levels the playing field a bit for those who are less music-knowledgable, but may have strong puzzle-solving skills. The puzzle is designed to require a bit more than just figuring out the tune. however, music knowledge is rewarded in this game as it gives you a big advantage in filling in a bunch of the blanks. feel free to copy/paste the "CLUES" section into your response and then enter your answers after each number. Good luck! I hope you get them all

also, I wanted to thank for what you said in the last line of your post! i was so focused on seeing if you got the right tune, that i forgot to mention it I may have said it already but, brilliantly played! are your parodies Tolkien related, by any chance? perhaps you might post one or both of them?

I'm enjoying these - although No. 6 is still eluding me. As for my parodies, one was LotR, 'I just can't wait to be king' for a Disney-mad friend. Very obvious stuff, along the lines of "I'm gonna be a mighty king, so Sauron should beware. I've got the ring of Barahir, I am Isildur's heir!" Shoddy, but I was 13.

I'm glad you're enjoying these, thank you. I enjoy doing them very much, especially lately for some reason, I think b/c I started getting into Tolkien-related discussion groups and my mind became more aware of how certain songs reminded me of various aspects of Tolkien's works and the adaptations. (BTW it...never...stops....! it's like every song I hear, at least the well-known ones, my mind goes to how it might connect with something from Middle Earth! and if I come up with a connection, suddenly I feel compelled to write it out! really weird!) Re: No. 6, I could give another hint if you like, but as I mentioned in reply to your post under the parody #2 thread, remember to apply the Clue. Spoiler: you've applied the Clue already with your current answer, but it just needs to be applied *more*. End Spoiler. I'm rooting for you! @\o/@ (you like my new cheerleader emoticon? new to me anyway) I chuckled with your Lion King parody lyrics a while back I saw a funny clip posted somewhere in these forums of two ppl in costume, at some convention or other, performing an Aragorn skit, lip synching that song, with choreography. they didn't change the words though. The second person was dressed as Legolas but I thought Boromir would have fit better in terms of staying in character (singing the Zazu parts). perhaps you could have somebody help you do a clip for youtube, a Lion King style cartoon, but instead of Simba it's Aragorn, still behaving all childlike and happy-go-lucky like Simba, singing & dancing to your parody lyrics, and Boromir's not happy about it (an altogether uninspiring thing!.... NOT...YET!....etc.)

Well, I keep thinking burning hands but that doesn't fit with the clue (as far as I can see). That pesky 'e' in the first word

SPOILERcloser but still not quite there. you still have some time to think it over more if you wish, see projected wrap-up schedule below. END SPOILER BTW as a parody writer yourself, you might enjoy taking a swing at Song Parody Warm Up Post #2 (if not both Warm Up Posts) earlier in this forum. Re: wrap-up schedule, at this point my thought is to post solutions/wrap ups to all four parody threads (2 warm-up threads and 2 actual-party threads) this coming Friday 12-23rd evening, at or shortly after 9pm EST. I'm hoping for more guesses on any if not all of the four parody puzzle threads, now that ppl have had the chance to view and comment on the Hobbit trailer (squeeee!).

Now that the party's been over for a while, it's a bit overdue to wrap things up. First, thanks to everyone who helped celebrate FOTR's 10th and made it special and memorable. Next but not least, congratulations to Nightingale, who cracked this puzzle wide open. Way to go! Not only that, Nightingale also solved puzzle #2. I will announce the prize, and present it, under the puzzle #2 thread. Thanks Nightingale for playing, and for playing so tenanciously and well. Nightingale has already posted the solutions above, but I thought I'd post the complete song parody lyrics. They are spoiler-tagged just in case.
