I always thought making unpleasant, greedy and corrupt characters physically unappealing (particularly wisp facial hair, greasy hair, ugly skin and the rest of things he describes) is really predictable and boring. It's too obvious - much like Grima. And I never even pictured him that way either, really (Master of LT, that is).
But I DO trust in the awesomeness of Stephen Fry to make him as fun a character (not necessarily in a humouristic way) as possible.
I also never pictured Lake Town particularly smelly, but rather as an ordinary town with ordinary people. I guess the producers are gonna show the transformation of the town after Smaug's death.

But perhaps it will look more natural in the context of the rest of the film. From all we've seen thus far, they really seem to aim for a less realistic and more fairy taily feeling than in LotR.

In the books Bilbo and Frodo (and Hobbits in general) being plump too helped me to deal with the somewhat cruel jokes made of fat people.
As for Lake Town being smelly, it sounds about right, really. Remember it's a city built above water. They dumb all their waste on their streets, so to say. And Venice is smelly too.
I'm curious about how literally we should take the notion of Long Lake being next to the Lonely Mountain. It would certainly look more cinematic, but it would also make one ask, how come they dare to live so close to a Dragon infested mountain.
Has there been any news of the Dale? Are they going to include it? The image of the ruined city is rather romantic.

And PJ, big deal about the 3D: how about smell-o-vision? And SLIME-o-vision?

Actually, Dale should be a really good opportunity for Weta etc. to show off.
I didn't 100% lile Osgiliath in LOTR, so I really hope they get thi one spot on......
Dale has great potential in these films

I always pictured the Master as over dressed and maybe even over-groomed with a fondness for jewelry, wine and good food . A fairly fat and rounded man. A great speaker and very charismatic, with the ability to weasel his way out of most situation. While not a brave man (he was a merchant not a solider), and corrupt he was a competent operator who kept the people of lake town content and allowed the trade to flow . He has had the job for over 20 years, and to the best of my knowledge the master is a elected position so he must have been fairly competent.

although, not sure whether or not I like the idea of a gross Master just yet...
Also, I hope that Laketown isn't TOO slimy, disgusting, and scary...we need to sympathize with these people and root for their survival. There should be a feeling of safety and comfort for Bilbo and the Dwarves, as a respite between Mirkwood and the Lonely Mountain, as well for the audience. I hope it doesn't end up being a larger version of Bree...

Destroying a rundown Lake-town full of corruption both natural and venal could be nice symbolically. A new dragon sweeps clean and Bard restores all.
And then you can have a nice scene where Turgon sends Echthelion up to restart trade with the north and a young Aragorn and Denethor make faces at each other!

Fry is grand. Can't wait to see how that first scene where the dwarves walk into the Lake Town hall will be done. Surprise! There's so much good material to mine in The Hobbit, it's just different from LOTR.
Also, I wonder if we'll get to see anything of Laketown in the first film? Perhaps in context of the dwarves story.

Could be Dale but before Smaug's arrival, deserted ruins or rebuilt by Bard....who knows?
Interesting because Dale doen't feature much in the story, only by references.
And before anyone raises the NDA I didn't hear the rumour while I was working....... Wellington is a small city.
