but saying that the book will be ruined by the cover isn't fair to the author, since that's the domain of the illustrator or graphic artist. Hence, the comments against William Kirchir, or definitively saying that the sight gag will ruin every shot Bifur is in, simply isn't substantiated (none of us having seen the movie)! But look at it this way: Bifur's head ornament will probably be a nice distraction from the Kili/Tauriel/Beorn/Necromancer love rhombus!

I hope none of my comments are interrupted that way, I'm just trying to point out that we don't know enough to make definitive statements about Willaim Kircher's performance and the character of Bifur in the film - so although obviously we're all free to form our own opinions, it's just to early to say one way or the other how this will play out on film. In short "I'm worried" is not the same as "this is already definitely horrible, and the filmmakers should change it, ETC".

I have never once said or suggested that my sensibility is better than any else's, or that my opinion makes me smarter than anyone else. You can say whatever you want to, so long as you don't put words in my mouth. That's the one thing that I won't except. You can say that I'm an idiot if you want to, but don't say that I have called you an idiot, because I haven't.

I prefer to let people try on their own shoes and see if they fit. Regarding Kircher's performance, I'm sure it will be fine. I think people's point, however, is they're afraid that thing in his head is going to be such a distraction that every time they see it, they'll be pulled out of their immersion in the film. It happened to me in LOTR every time they showed a close up of the hobbits nasty, pubic hair feet. Which, thank goodness, happened only a handful of times. A tiny detail, but a distraction all the same.

Merely acknowledging your question ("You really can't see a difference?") in the affirmative. I do make the assumption that you *can* see a difference. If that assumption is not correct then I do most humbly apologize.

Before the hypothetical "if William Kircher were reading this" popped up last page, I don't recall having seen anyone actually say anything bad about William. Even the part about it ruining every shot he is in is not about William, but rather the directors for putting him in the shot. As you say though, since the character design is outside of his domain, it would be unfair to criticize him for it, no disagreement there. Likewise, criticism of his character's design is not an insult to him, since the character design is outside of his domain. All he can do is play the character to the best of his abilities (which I do not doubt he will do), and that is all we can judge him on. We judge the book (how well William play Bifur) for itself, and the cover (his character design) for itself.

It just looks cheesy in my opinion. Kind of like the silly wilhelm scream will make the movie silly when PJ undoubtedly puts it in. I just CAN'T picture Tolkien saying "Hmmmm. let's have an axe head sticking out of one of the dwarves skulls for the whole story... Yeah, that's the ticket!" :-)

previous comments such as "No close-ups of William Kirchir!"several pages back, and more recently "Even if he were Lawrence Olivier, he'd still be hobbled by the axe in his head". BTW, how do we know Lawrence Olivier didn't have an axe in his head? But you're correct, it's been mostly focused on the make-up design, but seeing as we haven't seen the character in action (let's at least wait for the teaser), IMO, it's too soon to declare him distracting in the context of the film (where they will be much more going on).

The first comment is about the directors, for putting him (as Bifur) in the shot, and how the characer design (not the acting) could potentially ruin a shot. The second comment is about the character design potentially hindering his performance. None of it is criticism of William.

not giving Kircher any close-ups, whatever the reason, would ultimately be damaging to the actor more than anyone else; and the later comment, again, was unfounded (as we haven't seen any of his performance as Bifur, save for 1 second of his acting somewhat perturbed during the unexpected party, which wasn't as wierd as pouring wine down somebody's ear trumpet or "taking your first and doing THAT", IMO).
