Photo of PJ sitting on the steps of someone's house...(Spoilers!) Can't Post

From the NZ Herald article, link below:

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/entertainment/news/article.cfm?c_id=1501119&objectid=10768284

Sir Peter spoke in between scenes where Sir Ian McKellan as Gandalf the Grey, Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins and dwarves arrive at the house of Beorn (Mikael Persbrandt).
Tuesday was their third and final day of shooting on a giant set, which took eight weeks to build and was based on more than eight months of design - all for one scene of about three minutes of screen time.

PJ Quote at the end of this article is very telling. . . [In reply to] Can't Post

"The book was very much written for a much younger reader than Lord of the Rings was, but I didn't want to make a children's movie, I still wanted to have some of the main themes we had in the Rings." (Peter Jackson)

I like Pj. As an artist myself I would never want to duplicate someone else's work. I am glad he does not feel the need to "copy" but instead he is focused on making the best movie he can! In my opinion it's his right as an artist to make it his own!

Not really [In reply to] Can't Post

TH novel DOES have some of the same themes as LotR, just on a different scale. And by necessity, if there's going to be consistency between all five films in PJ's "Middle-earth Pentology", there will be a bit of LotR's presence inserted into TH (undoubtedly through the Necromancer sub-plot)...

Anyhoo, that structure we saw being built WAS Beorn's house...it looks fitting, as its "primitive", slightly off-balance aesthetic goes hand-in-hand with what's sure to be an intense performance from Mikael Persbrandt...

My Top 5 Wish List for "The Hobbit"
5. Legolas will surf down Smaug's neck
4. Bilbo will be revealed to a Robot
3. Naked PJ cameo as Ghan-Buri-Ghan
2. Use not only 3D, but smell-o-vision, with axes coming out of the seats and poking the audience when appropriate
1. Not only keep the claim that Thorin & Co. ran amok in Mirkwood "molesting people", but depict said incident in vivid detail!!!!!

That's the approach he took to LOTR and look how well that turned out! Good on you PJ.

Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..."
Dwarves: "Pretty rings..."
Men: "Pretty rings..."
Sauron: "Mine's better."

"Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded b*****d with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak.

So that is Beorn's house after all [In reply to] Can't Post

It's a great design in its own right, but not at all what I imagined Beorn's Hall to be like, going by Tolkien's descriptions of it.

I'm assuming they will only be shooting the exterior for three-minutes worth of screentime - with the interior being filmed inside the studio (like Meduseld). No way the Beorn scene is only three minutes long.

All I can do is make the best movie I can and hope people enjoy it. It's going to have a different tone to The Lord of the Rings because the characters are quite a lot different.

A lot of people had already figured that out anyway. I wish him luck - not entirely unselfishly.

Good [In reply to] Can't Post

It might be a children's book, but I'd much rather have the movies closer to LOTR (as in gritty etc) rather than a live action Disney film.

The key word here is "ARRIVES", since the stay they have,
with Beorn was a number of days.
"The Queer Lodgings" chapter one of my Most Favorite,
and to my mind,
Tolkien was in absolute-BLISS while writing it. 70 years ago.

Starting with 15 Great Eagles carrying our company,
it's gunna be sooooo... Mind-blowing to FINALLY see....in 3D?
and of Course,
Howard Shore's score will soar!

(Maybe as Amazing, and inspirational... as the Lighting of the BEACONS...WOwie)

I'm thrilled beyond belief, that it is really Finally happening.
(I have been waiting 40 +years)
Now, if I can just keep breathing... until Christmas 2013......

Yes, the quote is telling [In reply to] Can't Post

It tells us that PJ does not seem to have a good understanding of the thematic material in the Hobbit. The Hobbit not only contains all of the themes explored in LOTR (perhaps with not much on the "death" and "deathlessness" thing) it is almost identical in its thematic content. This automatic dismissal of the Hobbit as a "children's story" with not much to teach the adult world, is getting progressively more annoying.

GDT never spoke so simplistically and inaccurately about the Hobbit. It is shame that we will never get to know what his vision would have looked and sounded like.

But I'll cross my fingers and hope that Philippa and Fran have some sway in keeping PJ focused on the important themes.

No dancing bears? [In reply to] Can't Post

I really was hoping for a depiction of the all-night bear jamboree.

“I have been picking out bear-tracks,” [Gandalf] said at last. “There must have been a regular bears’ meeting outside here last night. I soon saw that Beorn could not have made them all: there were far too many of them, and they were of various sizes too. I should say there were little bears, large bears, ordinary bears, and gigantic big bears, all dancing outside from dark to nearly dawn. They came from almost every direction, except from the west over the river, from the Mountains. In that direction only one set of footprints led-none coming, only ones going away from here."

******************************************
Brother will fight brother and both be his slayer,
brother and sister will violate all bonds of kinship;
hard it will be in the world, there will be much failure of honor,
an age of axes, an age of swords, where shields are shattered,
an age of winds, an age of wolves, where the world comes crashing down;
no man will spare another.

Those steps, and the stonework, are identical to what we saw in those earlier photos/video. It's not Rhosgobel, it's Beorn's house. That is all but 100% confirmed.

But yeah, I really wish we get to see it! I love all of JRRT's dream sequences. "Realistic dreams" are hard to write, but JRRT was the master of that art (too).

The Hobbit is pretty gritty on its own right [In reply to] Can't Post

Much of the story and actions of the Hobbit are rather non-kidsfriendly when you think of it. It's just about the "voice" the story is told in. I can see much room for PJ to make TH "more adult" without actually changing the story elements and the plot.

However, I'm not entirely agreeing with the idea that "fairy taily" equals with "Disney". It doesn't have to have "gritty feeling" to be mature and iteresting to adults. I really hope they keep what quirkiness and adventure-eagerness there is to the book. It would serve as similar "OMG we're off into a fabulous new world" entry to Middle-Earth as the book did to the whole Middle-Earth legendarium. At the end of that reader's road are the Silmarillion, UT and HoME.

What I'm trying to say I wish TH will feel like it's the first entry into Middle-Earth, and that on emotional level and as an movie experience LotR naturally takes place after it.

And that disappoints me [In reply to] Can't Post

If that really is Beorn's "lodge."

If that's so, I have to look up at the sky and ask "Why?"

But in all honesty, i think i know the answer: Ego and Pride. PJ just wants to have his own "artistic" view of it and be "remembered" for it, and doesn't really put much stock into some long dead writer who very specifically described a building.

Bilbo, Bilbo! Bilbo Baggins,
He's only three feet tall.
Bilbo, Bilbo! Bilbo Baggins,
The bravest little hobbit of them all.

-Leonard Nimoy
