ARWEN’S CHOICE, or THE GREY HAVENS [parody of Stairway to Heaven]

It’s been widely noted that Led Z's “Stairway to Heaven” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qHFxncb1gRY contains an abundance of Middle-Earth related imagery. However, few are aware that it had been watered down from an earlier draft that had taken the imagery even further. The record company bigwigs, who hadn’t read Tolkien and just didn’t get it, rejected it and the song did not remain the same. Here is the newly discovered first draft: ARWEN’S CHOICE, or THE GREY HAVENS There’s a lady who’s sure “all that glitters ain’t gold” She’s declining her place at the Havens. When she stays, then she knows that her way will be closed With a word she will keep what she stays for Ooh, ooh, she’s assigning her space at the Havens. There’s a sign for the war that she’s carefully sewn ‘Cuz she knows sometimes flags help with winning. With a tree, seven stars, and a crown built with wings This to Aragorn’s forces is given. Ooh, they take it yonder Ooh, they take it yonder There’s a feeling she gets when she looks to the West And her spirit is crying for leaving In her thoughts, though, she’s seen winsome boy through the trees Run with joy to his dad while she’s looking Ooh, it’s made her wonder Ooh, it’s really made her wonder And it’s whispered that soon if the Ring falls to Doom Then the vessels will go out to Sea soon But a new day will dawn for she who stays long And the hallways will echo with laughter Now something’s troubling you, Frodo, and you’re alarmed now A Morgul splinter from the Witch King But here’s a new path you can go by, and in the long run There’s still time to change the road you’re on It’ll take you yonder…. Your soul is hurting and it won’t go, in case you don’t know, The shipwright’s calling you to join him Dear Frodo, can you hear the wind blow, and did you know Your pathway lies in the Mithlond wind. And as you wind on toward the boats The ship masts tall and hulls afloat There waits a lady we both know Who shines white light and wants to show A far green country with white shores And if you sail through it, will part A curtain raining silver-glass Where all are one and one is all You’ll learn to laugh and not to fall And he rides, in her place, from the Havens.
"That doesn't make much sense to me. But then again, you are quite small. Perhaps you're right."

That was great! Are you keeping these somewhere for posterity? Check with Magpie to see if she wants to include them in the TORn Mathom House.
And suddenly the Tornadoes saw afar off a greenlight, as it were a cloud with a living heart of flame; and they knew that this was no vision only, but that PJ had made a new thing: The Hobbit, the Film that Is.

the compliment, for the tip about checking with Magpie--whom I've sent a PM at your suggestion--and for informing me about the Mathom House, which I hadn't known about before. Sounds exciting!

Why the lyrics everyone knows are so cryptic. Darn studio execs! You've produced another classic, Ruxendil! Bravo!
