Thranduil's queen

I know J.R.R. didn't mention Legolas' mother, her name...etc. Do you think Peter Jackson has created a queen for Thranduil to add her into The Hobbit movie?

um. I hope not. It's yet another uncannonical character--nor do I see the need for her to be there, as I can't see where her role would be needed to encapsulate anything, like, for example Lurtz did to the orcs. But, we'll see. I won't lose sleep if PJ does it, but I don't think it would be a great move on his part.

it might seems strange to some people that there will be woodland king but no queen by his side so PJ might 1.add some female elf to be Thranduil's wife and Legolas' mother or 2.fabricate a reason why there isn't any. There is a theory that Legolas' mother died but it's purely fanon and what I know it is often use in fanfictions. To me to add Thranduil's wife who isn't mentioned in the book to have very small part is more canon friendly than completely made up character or characters having more than small role. Just my opinion.

...or whatever Itaril was purported to be. But she's not necessary to the plot, and I'd rather they stuck with presenting the characters JRRT wrote rather than embellishing the story with a bunch of made up extraneous roles.

What? we really got, only 2 of any importance in LOTR...any new ElfWomen is just fine by me. Personal opinion.(please don't get peed off!)..A surprize attack by Elfwomen from Mirkwood, turns the Tide of WAR at the BOT5A's........even though their ElfHusband's told them to stay home and mind the children....I know I'm not Canon here, but a guy can dream, or NOT? ( I know i'm gunna get creamed-PIEd by some of you, but what better place than a Fantasy-Film Website?) just 50 Mirkwood elfwomen could knock out (A late arrival?) the Last of those Stinking, Orcs., once Thorin is Motally wounded and Hope is kinda sorta LOST? ..I'd be just as Proud of them, as I was seeing.... Eowyn taking down the WitchKing with Merry's help..More GirlPOWER! xoxoOB

...since PJ didnt mention or elude to Celebrian, Elronds wife, mother to Arwen, & her whereabouts in the trilogy, it seems very unlikely there will be any queen at Thranduils side either. At least I hope not.

There are many instances where Tolkien wrote about a "scene" in all of his writings and didn't mention or introduce all of the people present. I know Peter has been criticized for filling in the background players with "real people", but the films would feel very empty if only those actually named by Tolkien were ever shown in any of the films.

No, actually, I think the fact that Elrond was shown completely without a wife creates a pattern that PJ won't want to needlessly repeat for Thranduil. I hope as many characters are added as possible.

Tolkien was always deliberately light on non-essential background details as it allowed the reader to fill in the details in their imagination in whatever way was most comfortable to them. When the dwarves were interrupting the elven parties, he said nothing about the gender of any of the elves beyond that there was a King there...which he needed later. So, he may have had a wife at his side or not - depending on what the reader expected...if even the reader thought about it. Since PJ has to flesh out the background, logically I would expect female elves at the woodland parties (they were not Ents - male and female elves tended to be found together), so the presence of a queen would make sense to me. But - I would expect a minor background role, perhaps not even speaking. So - dealer's choice.
