cast in a Shire scene, like plowing the corn fields, pulling wagons rather than end up as Beorn's midnight feast with the bears.

I mean, I know some bears also eat vegetation, but I thought they were primarily carnivores? (Not that Tolkien's bears can't be anything he wants them to be. I just wondered, though...)

with the emphasis on vegetation. Not polar bears, of course! But rather like humans, they can manage just fine without eating meat. This is quite an interesting site about European bears: http://www.medvede.sk/index1.php?action=zivot. They're mostly vegetarian.

CGI animals tend to look so hokey, and in the wrong light, tend to look fake. They should cast a giant Kodiak or something.

Persbrandt in a bear costume would look terribly fake, and there's no way they could have a real bear tearing up goblins. CGI is the way to go. Remember Gollum? This will turn out well.

CGI might be their only choice. Hopefully it doesn't look too terrible. WETA did a pretty good job with the thanator in Avatar, so hopefully they can do a bear some justice.
