The Saorise Ronan/Itaril Rumours Can Now Be Laid To Rest
|

|
In a new interview with the Belfast Telegraph, Saorise Ronan has revealed that she will not be playing the long rumoured role of the Elf Itaril in the upcoming Hobbit films. An excerpt follows:
It's probably not going to work out with The Hobbit unfortunately. Because I would have been working for about a year on it and there were other projects that I was very interested in. Head over to the Belfast Telegraph to read Ronan's entire statement in the interview. Does this mean the role of Itaril has been eliminated from the movie entirely, or does it simply mean that Ronan won't be the one playing it? Discuss on our message boards.

... as she's a really great actress. All in my opinion anyway. But oh well! Anyway, I never got why all the hate was pointed at the poor girl. I know people got sick of her being all coy about everything, but still... at least now she'll stop being asked about it (hopefully) .

For some reason I never expected her to be in the film.

Actually, the Itaril rumors have just been confirmed

The Saorise Ronan rumor can be laid to rest, but the Itaril rumor has just been confirmed. And not only did such a role exist, it was big enough to require a year-long commitment. I seriously doubt they will rewrite that much of the script just because the actress they had in mind didn't work out; someone else will be cast in her place.

...with all due respect to others, I was never a fan of this happening and am happy about this news, if it is indeed true. It just didn't feel right to me. Too young perhaps? P.S. I think someone misspelled her name. It's Saoirse isn't it? Not Saorise.

I was just getting used to the idea that she would be cast in the role, and even though I have my doubts about the character, I like Ronan as an actress. I'm now more uncomfortable with this, since they may get a lesser actress for a new character. I would bet that they crafted this role just for Ronan, but who knows. A year long commitment though? Good grief...I'm really curious to see what PJ has up his sleeve with this. It makes a bit nervous to be honest.

... as I feel right now, we still don't know that the part she was up for was Itaril. If this is genuine - and honestly, we've heard so many 'she is, she isn't, she is, she isn't' stories that I don't know whether it's Tuesday or Friday - but if this is for real, it only confirms that she was up for a part in The Hobbit. She says nothing about which part it was to be - the mention of Itaril is the journalist's. So maybe she was and they'll recast it. Or drop it altogether. Or maybe she was up for some other part - *cough* Primula? *cough*. And maybe she will do it after all - that's only a 'probably' there. In fact, we know about as much now as we did before. Is it Tuesday?

It is possible that the part she was up for was something completely different than the elf-warrior we're expecting. So strictly speaking, this is not confirmation that they had someone like Itaril in mind, but I think it does make it more likely.

...but I wouldn't have thought Itaril would either. I've no idea how much commitment any of these roles needs - a year sounds a long time to me. And we know it's likely that they will have some sort of story involving Primula as they've already cast Drogo - and his casting was important enough to be worth an announcement. But then, what do I know? Is it Wednesday?

Peter could go local with, say Keisha Castle-Hughes which would add an interesting twist.

Goodness gracious, just how big of a role does this unknown character have? And considering how big it is... who on earth will they find to replace said role? Will they do some serious script rewriting instead? (That would be cool, get rid of the character completely... or at least lessen her role significantly. A year, sheesh!)

She looks just like Ronan and is only a few years older, I believe. And if Itaril will require a year, she'd be in the films quite a bit...so, I guess this means she's a "major" role.
I would rather be watching Peter Jackson's "The Hobbit" and Ridley Scott's "Prometheus"...it's going to be a long few years.

That sounds strange and scary at the same time to me. Scary because it looks like the role is pretty big. Even bigger than of many canon characters. it surprises me Ronan won't take this role because according to what she said in interviews she really wanted the role. To deny a big role in the movie which is definitely going to be one of the most famous and auditioned movies ever is really strange decision.

IF the role is indeed fairly large, it would have to be in the secondary story of Dol Guldur where PJ has much more free reign creatively to interpret and add characters. I imagine the role still exists and will be filled.

Lobelia will team up with the company because Bilbo promised her Bag End and his precious silver spoons if she joined up with him for the quest. She followed him through all the adventures and was even a spectator at Battle of Five Armies. Lobelia returns home with Bilbo but Bilbo suddenly forgets his promise. No wonder she took those spoons.
The greatest adventure is what lies ahead.

Hopefully the role will die out as their first-choice actress leaves. If not, and the part is filmed and everything, I trust that PJ will make the right decision in the end and just cut Itaril out. In watching the director's commentary on LOTR, it seems that he was very good about not including elements that would be drastically different from the book and offensive to the fans (such as Arwen fighting at Helm's Deep or Sauron in bodily form fighting Aragorn at the Black Gate). www.facebook.com/Hobbit.Fans.Against.Itaril

with the "year long" comment. I don't know. I don't get why they HAVE to have a female in the Hobbit at all cost, even making up a character that now i'm affraid is bigger than i that thought? I hope one of the questions to PJ is about this character that i'm so tired of hearing of.

I hope this character won't be in the movie at all or as a background character only. Just read many reactions of fans on Facebook and they are happy about the news because they think Itaril role has been removed.

Peter Jackson is terrible at character development...

Look at King Kong, he keeps building up a level of tension between Hayes and Jimmy but their relationship is never fully explained. Then he dies and no-one cares despite the over-dramatic atmosphere because they never explained who the character is. Also the old guy in New York who seemed to have so much background history with Ann you assume he MUST show up again toward the end of the film, but he just vanishes. He seems to create entire stories that never get explained in the narrative of the film leaving everything feeling up in the air. I have a feeling this Itaril is going to be the same. Just an implied story that Peter Jackson thinks we understand but no-one has a clue. I'll be sitting impatiently through any scenes that feature her and when it comes out on DVD I'll do a King Kong and skip these scenes as they give nothing to the story and just create an air of confusion.

I love when people have an instant knee-jerk reaction to any supposed change from the source material, no matter how major or minor, because they think they're the "defenders" of the lore and anything new is inherently "scary and bad". The fact that PJ already gave use three (mostly) amazing movies means nothing. There's now a "facebook movement" against a character we know nothing about, in a script none of us have read? Give me a break, for God's sake!
