James Franco debates Stephen Cobert over which is the bigger Tolkien fan Can't Post

The interview with James Franco today (Tues. April 5th) on the Cobert Report was very entertaining. The entire show was great, as always, but the interview with Franco was the highlight. Towards the end (19:15 or just thereafter) they go from D&D into a short debate about who is the bigger, more knowlegable Tolkien fan. Stephen wins again! Watch it for yourself on ColbertNation.Com (4/5/11 episode) if you hadn't seen it already... Cheers! Pax! :)

See, [In reply to] Can't Post

you should never talk a big game if you don't have the skillz to back it up. Nice try Franco, but maybe a bit more reading is in order. Tongue

Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..."
Dwarves: "Pretty rings..."
Men: "Pretty rings..."
Sauron: "Mine's better."

"Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded b*****d with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak.

Whoa! [In reply to] Can't Post

Welcome back!

"most of Frodo’s “positive” comments involve reaching Mordor, and Sam’s positive comments are almost always on remembering the Elves. So which is more hopeful?"

Thank you!! [In reply to] Can't Post

I can't get the darn thing to play for me, but I DO KNOW that I can record it this morning as a repeat!! *giggle*

I remember when Colbert still worked on the Daily Show when Elijah Wood was on as a guest back... I think it was for FotR interviews... and Colbert about came unglued when Elijah signed his book for him.

Thanks for this, mwirkk!!!!

I really need these new films to take me back to, and not re-introduce me to, that magical world.

Helps when you have a staff of geeks writing for you. [In reply to] Can't Post

I haven't seen the episode (gave up TV for Lent) but I know Colbert often appears to know a lot more about subjects thanks to his writers. I'm betting Franco doesn't have a team of geeks prep him for his talk show appearances (not that having writers helped him much at the Oscars).

Love it [In reply to] Can't Post

But I also love that there's an even bigger Tolkien geek who corrects Stephen about Galadriel's motivation in the comments.

"That is one thing that Men call 'hope.' Amdir we call it, 'looking up.' But there is another which is founded deeper. Estel we call it, that is 'trust.' It is not defeated by the ways of the world, for it does not come from experience, but from our nature and First Being. If we are indeed the Eruhin, the Children of the One, then He will not suffer Himself to be deprived of His own, not by any enemy, not even by ourselves. This is the last foundation of estel, which we keep even when we contemplate the End. Of all His designs the issue must be for His children's joy."

The same goes for Presidents. But be that as it may... [In reply to] Can't Post

This I don't think was a scripted exchange. You are at the disadvantage of not getting to see the vid yet, though, so keep it in your to-do bucket as it was fun nonetheless. Btw- Here's a teaser: they make brief mention abit earlier in the interview to an incident back stage <smirks and giggles> that might have left James at just a bit of a disadvantage. <8P

What's really sad [In reply to] Can't Post

is that I was correcting him while sitting here watching it. I suppose that's the sign of a true geek. We just can't help it!

Wouldn't it be a scream to get Colbert to host a big LOTR event of some kind? Laugh

Silverlode

"Of all faces those of our familiares are the ones both most difficult to play fantastic tricks with, and most difficult really to see with fresh attention. They have become like the things which once attracted us by their glitter, or their colour, or their shape, and we laid hands on them, and then locked them in our hoard, acquired them, and acquiring ceased to look at them.
Creative fantasy, because it is mainly trying to do something else [make something new], may open your hoard and let all the locked things fly away like cage-birds. The gems all turn into flowers or flames, and you will be warned that all you had (or knew) was dangerous and potent, not really effectively chained, free and wild; no more yours than they were you."

I cheated a bit and watched the interview. [In reply to] Can't Post

I think Stephen's questions and replies are all written on those little blue cards. Not that he isn't familiar with Tolkien. But I've watched that show a long time and when he speaks with that kind of fluency, it's usually a sign of something written and rehearsed. When he's completely spontaneous, he's talks more briefly and with more hesitation (though no less wit).

Who can say... [In reply to] Can't Post

maybe he's already here? *ponders sibbies* I really hope so. It would show how wise and truely geeky he is if he dwelled here with us.

I think we should let him know when we FINALLY get a date and plans for NYC RotK. I'll betcha he'd say "OK! I'm there!!" We'll have to make sure he knows where we're mooting :)

hilarious! [In reply to] Can't Post

ah, that was fantastic.

For instance, on the planet Earth, man had always assumed that he was more intelligent than dolphins because he had achieved so much -- the wheel, New York, wars, and so on -- while all the dolphins had ever done was muck about in the water having a good time. But conversely, the dolphins had always believed that they were far more intelligent than man, for precisely the same reasons. -- Douglas Adams

I read in Wiki that he's a big LotR fan. If so, how can he not at least have lurked these boards, which are the epitome of Tolkien fandom?

What's the matter, James? No glib remark? No pithy comeback?"
