I was about eleven years old, watching the EE DVD after having just finished the books. From that viewing, The Breaking of the Fellowship scene really moved me (and it still does, of course). I suppose that was my favorite.

Sorry, no can do! Heck, I even have trouble picking one screencap when I lead SCOD around here! Here's a few: FOTR -- Gandalf and Frodo's talk about mercy in Moria, the breaking of the bridge, Boromir's final stand and death scene, Aragorn's rallying of Gimli and Legolas at the end, Frodo and Sam in the boat TTT -- The three hunters running across the landscape, Eomer and company circling around the three hunters, Grima/Eowyn scene, the arrival of Gandalf and company at the Golden Hall, the Ents marching on Isengard, Merry's speech to Pippin about "there won't be any Shire", Aragorn waving the sword around to give that kid hope right before the battle, and... ROTK -- Gandalf's ride into Minas Tirith, the Beacons, Sam's "don't go where I can't follow" moment, "you bow to no one" and... I better stop, have to get some work done today! See, I just can't help myself! Hope some more decisive folks come along to reply!

First, last, and always. Many fine scenes, but none as exhilarating as that one. It sums up the power of the peoples of Middle-earth to come together and defeat Sauron.

“It’s like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo, the ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger, they were. . . . Those were the stories that stayed with you, that meant something, even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. . . . There’s some good in this world, Mr. Frodo, and it’s worth fighting for.” Wow. Still my favorite.

flaring nostrils (pun) and all. A titanic battle that is marvellously realised on screen, with a monster that has become iconic.

I never started to read Lord of the Rings until FotR came out and my Father was pushing me to read the books when he heard PJ was making the movies back in 1999. The whole movie blew me away, the depth, the storyline, the characters, the cultures, the history but this one scene in the FotR completely hooked me. I came out of the cinema wanting to know more about Middle Earth, my Father for the rest of the night had to put up with me asking question after question.

Just awesome design and realization. Not crazy about the rewrite of the scene but the Balrog itself was terrific.

Although there are so many moments from the books perfectly realised on screen (Gandalf's arrival in Hobbiton, Strider in the inn at Bree, the Balrog, Boromir's death, the march of the Ents, the Three Hunters, the Ride of the Rohirrim, the destruction of the Ring) and others I love (Pippin's song and Faramir's charge and the "silver glass" speech in Minas Tirith especially) the beacons are just so amazingly shot and the music is beautiful, and it's so emotional with no words being spoken. It's what filmmaking is all about.

It's a tough one for me but I would have to say either when Frodo and the gang are chased while still in the shire, particularly the one scene where Frodo looks off and the Ringwraith is profiled on his steed and the wind is howling around him; or the Mines of Moria where Gandalf raises his staff and the vastness of the halls is revealed in dark shadows; and when the Balrog rushes up to the bridge in all his black glory

Here are A FEW of my favorites from each movie. (Picking just one to represent all three movies would be a Herculean feat.) Fellowship of the Ring - almost every shot is so beautiful and magical in this movie... I especially liked the first view of Rivendell, Frodo and Galdalf's conversation in Moria, Boromir's final stand and death, Sam following Frodo out into the river... Two Towers - when Gandalf returns, when we first see Shadowfax, the King of the Golden Hall, the scene with Boromir and Faramir (extended version), Sam's monologue in Osgiliath... Return of the King - the whole Battle of Pelennor Fields, Sam's line "I can't carry it for you, Mr. Frodo, but I can carry you", the reunion of the Fellowship... There are so many special moments - I can't begin to list all of them!

So I'll pick one per movie. FOTR - Gandalf v. The Balrog on the bridge of Khazad-dum, and the boys choir music that accompanies his loss. Gives me chills, still. TTT - Eomer and Gandalf coming down over the hill to rescue Theoden, Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli at the end of the battle of Helm's Deep. ROTK - when Aragorn, recenlty crowned king, says to the hobbits: "My friends...you bow to noone." then he bows to them. Still brings a tear to my eye.

The Dweller was very cool. PJ did a good job of "upping the ante" on this one, making it as shocking and thrilling to today's more jaded audiences as the original was to readers in the 50s. (Though Gandalf should have solved the "riddle" as in the book, that goes against the "heirarchy of heroes" principle in modern screenwriting.)

I've always been fascinated with history and archaeology I wouldn't say it sparked an interest in fantasy for me rather than an extension of my interest . Middle Earth to me feels real, Tolkien went to such amazing lengths to make his world feel like it once existed or could exist.

As others have said, the Balrog scene was just amazing. That stands out since I remember seeing FOTR in the theater and being so excited for it. Once ROTK came out, then I too love the beacons alighting.
For instance, on the planet Earth, man had always assumed that he was more intelligent than dolphins because he had achieved so much -- the wheel, New York, wars, and so on -- while all the dolphins had ever done was muck about in the water having a good time. But conversely, the dolphins had always believed that they were far more intelligent than man, for precisely the same reasons. -- Douglas Adams
