This could be the perfect Voice of Smaug

I don't know if this guy was mentioned in past threads, but I was watching Underworld last night and immediately thought that he could easily be the voice of the dragon, and without any need for special effects on his voice. Kevin Grevioux was a writer, actor and producer of Underworld, and the first few times I saw the movie I thought they used special effects and pitch change software on his voice, but after having seen the making of the movie, he talks the same in real life as in the movie and it's not effects that make his voice sound like that. If you haven't seen Underworld, you have to hear him to believe it.

When I hear Smaug talk I want to hear pure evil and malice. Neither Pierce Brosnan nor Liam Neeson have the voice for that. Plus I really don't want to be watching these movies and seeing Aslan laying a smack down on Dale!
if more of us valued food and good cheer above gold and jewels. it would be a merrier world.

Kevin Grevioux 's voice in Underworld? I think if he changed his character's tone (not pitch) and became more sly, devious and whatever else Smaug should be, it could work nicely...check him out.

No, I haven't, but that man does have a deep voice. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tc1QvI_llE0 He sounds like the department store manager from that Bug's Bunny cartoon "Hare Conditioned". "He-he-he-he-he. Kind of outsmarted you. Eh, little chum?" I think that's too deep, like Adam's Family Lurch deep. A dragon should act like a dragon, it may seem evil, but it's just in it's nature to be that way. It shouldn't necessarily have a Darth Vader deep booming voice, IMHO. I think it just depends on what the computer model looks like, the voice should match the overall feeling of the model, be it deep or not.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tc1QvI_llE0 Though he is not in character, it does give you a sense of the depth of range potential he has in his voice, just from listening to him talk in his normal voice. He can make his voice higher or lower than that, as you can hear in his character in the movie Underworld. He can make his voice sound like it has some crazy effect on it. Don't know if it would work for Smaug, but he has an interesting timbre to his voice that could be perfect for playing sly, cunning, evil, etc.

I'm sure they will try different voices for Smaug, possibly 100's before they find the one that fits with the look of Smaug, but his would definitely be one I would at least test out different ways to see if it works...when he is talking there, and I guess even in Underworld, you don't see his higher range which combined with the lower range could make for an interesting & distinctive character. And I think they would want Smaug to be different from every other character or dragon in movie history, in every way possible, including his voice. Hard to say if it would work unless they experimented with Kevin in the studio a bit. But yeah, his voice is almost freakishly deep.

with the kids. In the movie there is a snake and as I heard the snake's voice, it struck me as fitting very well and thought immediately of Smaug. As I listened closer, I couldn't quite tell who the actor was. I looked for the actor during the credits and was surprised to see that it was Bill Nighy. I know that his name has been thrown around here as the voice of Smaug. After hearing his voice in Rango, I think he might do well as Smaug. He didn't have a British accent in the movie so it was a bit more difficult for me to recognize him. Not certain what accent Smaug should/might have.

It would scare the hell out of me, if he were angry, I wonder if he could pull off an accent, or if it would even be required? Are talking dragons supposed to have a regional dialect?

Anybody here remember Ted Williams? lol Just kidding of course. I don't know. I'd like for Smaug's voice to be a deep one. One of a kind. Liam Neeson and James Earl Jones have done ENOUGH of that. So i don't know.

The Big Bad Werewolf. He was AWESOME in that movie. I too thought his voice was amazing. But will it be TOO gutteral for Smaug? It still has to have that smooth, mesmerizing quality. Oh, it really is too bad old Barry White is no longer with us! He'd have talked Bilbo right out of his ring. And possibley out of his britches! Lol *ques disco music* "Step into the light of my eyes. Let Smaug see if you are as fine as your unrecognizable scent suggests. . . Aww, yeah!" LOLOLOL. In all serious though, Kevin does have an amazing voice. I had NO idea he wrote, and produced for Underworld. Impressive. I don't know if this guy was mentioned in past threads, but I was watching Underworld last night and immediately thought that he could easily be the voice of the dragon, and without any need for special effects on his voice. If you haven't seen Underworld, you have to hear him to believe it. "Hear me, hounds of Sauron, Gandalf is here! Fly if you value your foul skins, I will shrivel you from tail to snout if you step within this circle!" "Do not be to eager to deal out death in judgement. Even the very wise cannot see all ends."

Tom Waits. I vowed any time I saw a Smaug post that I would mention Tom Waits. I've been doing it since the HB2 discussion boards when GDT was first announced as director. Tom Waits or bust. Besides he was just inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame, lets get him an Oscar as well, best vocal performance 2012 TOM WAITS the Hobbit!!! Also he just started work on a new album about two weeks ago, could he be working with Howard Shore? Maybeeeeee? Probably not but a boy can dream. Seriously though, Tom Waits. If not as Smaug then as the Goblin King, or the thrush.
Oh Yeah, Check out his Majesty.

When I heard Kevin in the interview/making of Underworld I was shocked because I thought it wasn't his real voice in the movie. Hard to say if it could work for Smaug, but it doesn't sound completely human. They could always use a Vocaloid...

He is quite multi-talented, so I wonder if given the chance would he have some smoother upper range to go with the deep dragony voice he has!? I guess they wouldn't really know unless they screen tested him, but one things for certain, he wouldn't need much effects on his voice ... isn't it kinda uncanny the sound of his voice ... that's why I thought it might work or be perfect for Smaug, because it's like nothing we've heard, and very distinctive, and not that well known. I keep thinking that someone that multi-talented Kevin would be able to pull it off and do more with his voice than what we see in Underworld or talking in the interviews...given the chance he may do extraordinary things...!??? But like many on here, though I suggest Kevin & think it's worth a test to see if it works for Smaug, my first and previous choice was Nighy... It's comforting to see so many agree on Nighy, maybe Jackson is listening to our ideas, like he did with Martin Freeman...!
