There's nothing scary about a snake with wings..even if it does spew fire..
Can't help but think the nose/head looks like that from a Greyhound..Give us something fearfull!

The designers for Alien have said that they chose not to give the creature eyes. Part of what makes the alien disturbing is that you can never tell if it's looking at you or not. Del Toro said in the New Yorker interview that he wanted Smaug's eyes to be 'sculpturally very hidden', which would create a sense of drama. Perhaps Bilbo would not be able to tell whether Smaug had seen him? I'd love to know what del Toro had in mind for 'Inside Information'.

be large and powerful with a huge whipping tail. I think the head design on both AL and JH dragons needs work to make them more menacing and darkly attractive at the same time.

Has anyone else noticed this floating around the web? I can't really figure out if it is authentic ~ or really what it is at all for certain. Supposedly, Peter Konig made this design for GDT's Smaug... could be an indication that they were trying to go for something surprising and different..? If it is authentic, then I would assume that it is only one of numerous ideas that were being considered...

Now that's interesting! I'm pretty sure that concept art is official – I've even found a brief article on it from 2008 (though it's in German). Whoever created this image is clearly a professional artist, so I doubt very much that it's a counterfeit.
I like it! It depicts Smaug as a sculptural yet reptilian beast... bulbous and grotesque yet somehow strangely elegant. I especially like the face – it looks as if his whole head was hewn from some sort of rock or petrified wood, and he has a strange horn-like protrusion growing from the front of his skull. The curving horns give him an almost Balrog-like quality. He doesn't look quite as serpentine as I would like him to be, but perhaps that's because we only see him from the neck up. I wouldn't mind seeing a few elements of this design making their way into the final film.

Hello, Flagg. Like you, the professional quality of the artwork makes it seem that it is likely authentic 'something'. As far as who made it, and for what project, I'm still a tiny bit skeptical (the "smaug konig 08" could have been added by another party wishing to deceive people?). Having said that, the design does seem Jackson/Tolkien-esque (thinking about the LOTR creature designs). I like it too, and hope that they are going in this direction. I would like to be surprised by an imaginative new take on a dragon ~ of course, they have to 'nail it' or ruin Smaug. Smaug is such a huge character in the Hobbit / LOTR story-line that it seems like a wasted opportunity to trot out some fairly-typical design which might not even really seem akin to other creatures in the films. I could see this design or something along this line working well for Smaug ~ the face seems capable of a lot of expression and intelligence, but is still 'animal' enough to be really intimidating. The lips aren't 'simian-like' (perhaps this Smaug will enunciate using his tongue and throat more without having to rely on his lips so much). The Balrog-like horns hint at the similar origin of the dragons, and the whole design seems in-line with the film trilogy. If this is the angle from which they're going at Smaug, then I'm looking forward to being pleasantly surprised again by the body design.
