So one character we haven't heard about, and about whom I haven't even seen much speculation, is Dain of the Iron Hills. Do you think he'll make an appearance, or will he go the way of Prince Imrahil? If he doesn't show up, will they just drop the "who becomes king after Thorin dies" and not address it?
For instance, on the planet Earth, man had always assumed that he was more intelligent than dolphins because he had achieved so much -- the wheel, New York, wars, and so on -- while all the dolphins had ever done was muck about in the water having a good time. But conversely, the dolphins had always believed that they were far more intelligent than man, for precisely the same reasons. -- Douglas Adams

I would bet on Dain being in the film, as there are rumors that Brian Blessed may be attached to the role, but you never know. I remember when Del Toro had confirmed that even Thrain would be appearing in the film, which made me think that even the smaller characters in the book would be appearing as well, unless of course things have changed...everything works so well in The Hobbit novel, so I don't see why it would.

...I think at the end we'll have enough of them, not bad but as is written in the books they are very similar so it will be a bit difficult to remember each one of them and I hope PJ won't make them ridicolous as Gimli in some scenes (specially in EEs) of the trilogy btw long live the dwarves

I remember some people here suggesting Blessed for the role of Dáin a while back, but I don't think any solid rumours were ever reported.

I expect that Dain will be one of the last major supporting roles to be announced. He enters the story at a very late stage and is unlikely to appear at all until Part Two; but, more importantly, I don't think that the Battle of the Five Armies will be lensed until fairly late into the shoot. That makes his casting and its announcement a relatively low priority for Peter Jackson and company.

"There has not been much casting for second-movie-only characters.//" If we can take that as read then perhaps that's put paid to the chance of a prologue flashback to Azanulbizar in movie 1? Still, there's always movie 2, and perhaps that's the best place to put any specific flashback to that character - perhaps while Thorin's holed up at the Lonely Mountain, recalling his cousin's earlier prowess in battle.

but have a very brief appearance in Part 1, I would expect that PJ will film their Part 1 appearance near the end of the Part 1 filming, just so they wouldn't have to fly into NZ for just a few shots
..The land of long-forgotten name: ......no man may ever anchor near; ..No steering star his hope may aim, ......for nether Night its marches drear, ..And waters wide no sail may tame, ......with shores encircled dark and sheer. ..O! Haven where my heart would be! ......the waves beat upon thy bar ..For ever echo endlessly, ......when longing leads thy thought afar

Joe Pesci would make a perfect Dain, and I would like to see him add some of his trademark psychopathic outbursts to the character... maybe stomping repeatedly on some goblins' heads while they're lying on the ground during the Battle of the Five Armies, screaming "go back to your ******* caves you ******* *****!" in a thick New York-accent.
Now now Bill, you swore this was a battle between warriors, not a bunch of miss nancies, so warriors is what I brought

Pesci could work...lol. I also think Scottish comedian Billy Connolly would make a brilliant dwarf.

Was the possibility of Stephen Fry playing Dain. Although doubtless Dain will go through a rigorous auditioning process, Stephen Fry has become friendly with Peter Jackson and the team and i daresay Peter is aware of his performance as Melchett and the Duke of Wellington from Blackadder, credentials which could hardly hurt a claim to the role of Dain. He would HAVE to be in it. For crying out loud, they cast Azog......He kills Azog. I don't imagine the films wouldn't have some kind of prologue or flash backs dedicated to the dwarf history and their deep seeded hatred of goblins and orcs. Dain is the only one that glimpses the inside of Moria at that time and tells of Durin's bane. As far as film 2 goes. He comes to Thorin's (not to mention everyone's) aid at the battle of 5 armies and succeeds Thorin as king under the mountian. If these films are to tie the events between the LOTR trilogy and the Hobbit story, Dain is an important character and shouldn't be left out......That is UNLESS PJ and co. decide to change the story so that Thorin lives at the end. I hope not. I would think Gerard Butler would be a great choice for Dain Ironfoot.
