UK police hold man with possible Tolkien forgeries Can't Post

Purchase any signed copies of The Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit on Ebay recently? We hope not! Looks like the UK police are investigating a 65 year old man who was selling forged signatures of Winston Churchill, J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis and others. [Read More]

Homo Homini Warg.... [In reply to] Can't Post

I can't help but be a little bit curious, though---did he use early editions, or was he air-headed enough to use copies which weren't published until after the authors' deaths? Crazy Inquiring bibliophiles want to know!

Was the world being born what called me...?

I guess he did use early editions [In reply to] Can't Post

- because as you say, using one published after Tolkien's death would be stupid, wouldn't it? Mind you, that didn't stop this guy doing just that -

This is a re-listing. Originally he was very definite that the Tolkien signatures were genuine, in spite of the fact that there is a cd in the set; it has a bar code, etc. (this set was produced in 2000). He was charging 18,888 USD for it then - said 10% would go to Save the Children...

He's changed the price since then; and also his spiel. It's now so convoluted as to be almost laughable.

Nb - the signature in the book is okay; it's a printed facsimile. I have several books with this example. No problem there.
