The 'Show us your Smaug' Giveaway
|
Can't Post
|
|
When we posted a sketch of Smaug, little did we know the passion it would unleash. One of the great mysteries about “The Hobbit” films will be the design of Smaug, one of the most influential dragons in all of popular culture. Many have an idea of what the great worm should look like but only people behind the scenes know for sure and they aren’t talking. Thanks to forum member and Ringer Blueman for emailing us his sketch (on the right) to get the party started. The sketch that gets the most ‘Likes’ will win a copy of the BBC Lord of the Rings radio play! Good luck to you all! [TORN Facebook]

(and good luck). It's an interesting sketch. Problem I have with it is that I can't see it flying - if the wings are at the back, what would be holding up the head and the front part of the body? Wouldn't that need a stiffer spine than you'd expect to find on a sinuous and snakey creature?

I thought with a lot of abs it could work, maybe? But, honestly, I don't know if this could work, I have done zero research into snakes etc. because I was first and foremost interested in understanding what GDT's descriptions really mean and how it would look if you read them carefully and also consider earlier remarks by Guillermo made on these boards. He probably could tell you how it could work and I am sure they worked something out (maybe a stronger spine) and did their research ...

A couple of years ago when Weta first starting looking at designs for Smaug I produced some hand sketches at home and sent them to a friend of a friend who works in Pre-Vis at Weta. I believe they were shown to some people but was not told who. In any case nothing ultimately became of them but it was still a privilege to have been able to be ‘included’ in some small way. Anyhow, here are a couple of them.

Can anybody shed some light on the original sketch? The article says that one was posted, but I can't find it anywhere? Or am i just being retarded? Help!

http://newboards.theonering.net/forum/gforum/perl/gforum.cgi?do=post_view_flat;post=321389;page=1;sb=post_time;so=DESC;mh=25; That one was posted on the main page and caused a big discussion because it looks like a cartoon character and is very unlike the description in the GDT interview piece. The post seems to have been taken down in the meantime ...

you have kind-of a butterfly look going on, but not the dainty part also, it looks like the wings would fold smoothly my problem with it is that I think the wings, when folded, would extend past the tail, which might look strange

& it is a bit blurry on purpose. It would take a lot longer to finish out the original so I smudged it just a bit to hide the flaws. It was the shape that I was going for. This is what my interpretation of what GdT was talking about in the New Yorker article

get around to reading that article sometime soon I've read the snippets people have quoted, but not the entire thing yet (I have it bookmarked though) Until then (I'm doing schoolwork right now, in case you couldn't tell ) could you tell me: Is the dragonfly thing your idea or GdT's?

That's a good sketch. It kinda looks like smoke after the flame, but I'm guessing that is your signature and was just coincidence?

I hope you don't take this the wrong way, but I used to work in a zoo and that is the EXACT posture and facial expression the vultures had when they crowded around some dead meat and didn't want anyone to approach. I can easily imaging that his body and the rocky peak are concealing charred corpses of the dwarves' ponies, or possibly some of Smaug's treasure, or who only knows what else. I love it....very Smaug.
Was the world being born what called me...? At the bottom of the deep sea, I could hear a voice.

Its great to get nice feedback and I absolutely get you vulture comparision. Even though Smaug is a golden dragon I kinda feel that he should be horrible and repulsive too, to reflect what a depraved individual he is. After all death and destruction is what he is all about.

..a vast red-golden dragon, but IMHO not a shiny and attractive red-golden colour but suitably battle scarred and disfigured (to reflect his personality)...

but the user esheming found what appears to be an authentic piece of concept art depicting Smaug. It was reputedly drawn by Peter Konig for Guillermo del Toro back in 2008. You can read esheming's original message here; unfortunately it was posted on the fifth or sixth page of the forum, and no one seems to have noticed it but myself. The artwork itself can be found here; it's an unconventional Smaug, but I do like it. The horns and general layout of the face are very reminiscent of the trilogy's creatures, particularly the Balrog, but the carven, almost architectural quality of the upper head and lower jaw is more in line with del Toro designs such as Cathedral Head and the Angel of Death, both of which are from Hellboy II. Thoughts?
