Dominic Keating Auditioned for Role in Hobbit
|

Thanks to a recent interview by Robert Beck of Lotsofinterviews.com, we now know that actor Dominic Keating (Malcom of Star Trek Enterprise) auditioned for a role in The Hobbit. When asked what roles he has upcoming, Dominic answers... And I’m still waiting to hear on the Hobbit. They’ve been in production a long time to get this going but they lost their director which is maybe why I haven’t heard anything yet so fingers crossed. [Read the full interview] What role could he be up for? Discuss in our forums and on facebook!

Star Trek: Enterprise...that's all I can see when I look at this actor...and I didn't really even like or watch that show. I'll admit he does look a bit elvish though.

Apparently he was only under consideration while Guillermo was still in charge. Perhaps Dominic Keating is another name for us to add to the list which already includes Ron Perlman, Doug Jones, Ian McShane/Brian Blessed...

Are there any statements or other evidence that leads to the conclusion that the change in directors has caused his situation or is it a suggestion on your part that this is the case?

Dominic Keating's that is. It's right in the interview, at the very end. It makes me think that either this is an older interview than it appears to be, or else Dominic Keating hasn't been keeping up-to-date on The Hobbit.
They went in, and Sam shut the door. But even as he did so, he heard suddenly, deep and unstilled, the sigh and murmur of the Sea upon the shores of Middle-earth. From the unpublished Epilogue to the Lord of the Rings

Guillermo would have cast Ian McShane and Brian Blessed? Was it ever said that they were to be in the film?

but I believe at least Brian Blessed is on record as saying Guillermo had contacted him regarding Thorin
if more of us valued food and good cheer above gold and jewels. it would be a merrier world.

Dr Death said that Guillermo recommended Ian McShane for Thorin in an interview with The Times in the UK, and Brian Blessed said in a video interview a few weeks back that he and Guillermo had had discussions about the possibility of him playing the role.

I didn't think I'd ever seen anything official, just people here saying they thought Brian Blessed would be good (as I did - I thought he'd have made a good Beorn, being pretty bear-like!)

One thing I would say, thinking about it....

... is that even where it seems as it does here that Guillermo (and Peter Jackson, presumably) considered these actors we can't say with any certainty that they would have been cast. Surely Guillermo doesn't just take the first named actor for each role - wouldn't he audition several? We've heard so many actors mentioned as auditioning or being considered over the months who haven't been cast - or who are still waiting to hear - or maybe some who have been cast but not announced yet. Fact is, we don't know who Guillermo would have cast when it came to it and we can't know, anymore than we know what his designs would have been once they were finalised or anything else about the film he might have made. He's a friendly, talented man and I wish him every success, but as far as The Hobbit's concerned I'd rather focus now on what Peter Jackson IS doing and give him a free hand to do it, without constantly holding up this imaginary lost 'ideal'.

If Keating does get a part, I'm guessing that it may be a Wood-elf role; perhaps Galion (the king's butler) or the chief of the Wood-elf guards from whom Bilbo steals the cell keys to free the Dwarves.

but for some characters we have a very good idea. The fact that he was considering the likes of Brian Blessed and Ian McShane for the role of Thorin implies quite strongly that he would not have gone in the 'hot Dwarf' direction, for instance. And he's already told us that he had written parts specifically for Ron Perlman and Doug Jones, who would probably played Beorn and Thranduil respectively, according to statements made by the two actors.
