Character Highlight: Beorn Can't Post

Here at TheOneRing.net, we will be posting series of profiles for cast and characters we expect to play a role in The Hobbit films. Today's highlight: Beorn.

Beorn
Alias: Skin-changer
Cast: Mikael Persbrandt

Little is known of Beorn's origins. He once lived in the Misty Mountains near the Goblin's cave, but at the time of The Hobbit he lived in the edge of the mountains near the Carrock. Beorn was a skin-changer and could transform himself into a great bear. On the first night the Party stayed in his house, he warned them not to stray outside "on their own peril." Later that night, Bilbo heard growling and scuffling outside and Gandalf later told the Company he witnesses "a regular bear's meeting" that night.

The enchantment associated with Beorn didn't stop with his ability to turn into a bear. His servants were animals that could walk upright and talk. He aided the Company by providing them food, and the use of his ponies as far as the eaves of Mirkwood. Later, Beorn killed the goblin Bolg in the Battle of Five Armies. Beorn's descendants were valiant men who aided Aragorn during his search for Gollum (Unfinished Tales - "The Hunt for the Ring"). At the Council of Elrond, Gimli credited the Beornings with keeping the High Pass through the Misty Mountains open for travel between Rivendell and Dale.

This Will Be Amazing. [In reply to] Can't Post

To see a large Bear enter the Frey and raising Havoc against Orc and Wrags. With Eagles also involved. The Battle of The 5 Armies should be the greatest Battle Sequence ever seen. Even Helms Deep would not be on as grand a scale.

And Vampire Bats!!! [In reply to] Can't Post

Yeah, it'll be epic! Tongue

Can't wait to see Beorn come to life...wonder how they'll do the "shape-shifting" effect? I'd prefer something like a refined version of the "skin-shedding" transformation of the Werewolves in "Van Helsing"....

Samuel L. Jackson for Bilbo, Woody Allen for Thorin, Lewis Black for Bard and Gilbert Gottfried for Smaug!

MAKE IT HAPPEN, PETER!!!

Always wondered about [In reply to] Can't Post

how Beorn will look in BOFA. Obviously in bear-shape but will he have any Persbrandt-touches or just a regular CG bear?

Height? [In reply to] Can't Post

I am wondering about the height of Beorn mentioned in this profile: 6 - 6.5 feet (1.9 - 2.0 meters). And Beorn towers over Gandalf? If this were true, then Gandalf must be much shorter than 6 feet.

For some reason I always pictured Gandalf being taller and thereby also a taller Beorn than 6.5 feet.

Don't have the book in front of me, but didn't it say that Bilbo could have walked between Beorn's legs without his head touching the bottom of Beorn's long tunic? Would this Hobbit height match with only a 6 foot tall Beorn?

About the height... [In reply to] Can't Post

I really hope they don't stick with 189cm. It's way too short. I was always imagining him to be 7ft + in the book. And as Ian is 180cm, 9 more wouldn't exactly make him "towering over Gandalf".

bears [In reply to] Can't Post

What if they actually don't show Beorn change. They can show that something is happening to him, getting angry, something obscures view of him at the battle then there's a bloody big nasty bear there.
The best werewolf transformations I've seen, since I would immagine both transformations would look similar, are the non CG transformations, like in An American Werewolf in London.

I said in an older thread maybe they can base his bear form design on not a current bear specie, but maybe an extinct kind. I suggest the short faced bear from the ice age

I imagined Beorn to be colossal. [In reply to] Can't Post

For some reason I got the impression that he grew larger as he grew angrier, not unlike the Incredible Hulk. He was twenty or thirty feet tall by the end of the Battle of Five Armies (at least he was in my mind's eye).

Gandalf's physique [In reply to] Can't Post

Gandalf is described by Tolkien as "a figure strongly built and with broad shoulder, though shorter than the average of men and now stooped with age."

The average height of an adult male from England is 5'9" or 5'10". So Gandalf would probably be around 5'6" or 5'7".

So basically, he's Tom Cruise's height.

That Beorn looks distinctive, and not just like an oversized black bear. What's the fun in that?

Rodu's idea of modeling Beorn after an extinct species is a good one.

"giant-size" [In reply to] Can't Post

In The Hobbit it says

Quote
He came alone, and in bear's shape; and he seemed to have grown almost to giant-size in his wrath.

Oh no ... it says "seemed" ... It's Balrog Wings all over again ... Crazy

I hope it's NOT a traditionally CG bear [In reply to] Can't Post

CGI looks bad in dogs, cats, wolves, bears, you name it. You recognize the artificiality of their skin and their movements more easily. I hope the creatures of The Hobbit have a real palpable texture to them, like the world of Pan's Labyrinth.

I don't want an entirely CG Smaug either. It worked for the Balrog, but the Balrog is a shadow, and Smaug is so very real.

Definitely Kong sized for Beorn. [In reply to] Can't Post

I would also like to see some build up to his appearance in the battle. I think it would be great to see him running to the battle, taking out trees and everything else in his way, roaring his head off. He should squash goblins under his giant paws and fling wolves and wargs around like ragdolls. So much for a kids movie Wink

and further, I'd like to see a bee 'take out' a bat in aerial combat at Bo5A as a herald to the arrival of Veorn to the battle

OH geez! [In reply to] Can't Post

What a image that is. Did Alan Lee do that? I like the demonstrative whirlwind in the back also.

''Sam put his ragged orc-cloak under his master's head, and covered them both with the grey robe of Lorien; and as he did so his thoughts went out to that fair land, and to the Elves, and he hoped that the cloth woven by their hands might have some virtue to keep them hidden beyond all hope in this wilderness of fear...But their luck held, and for the rest of that day they met no living or moving thing; and when night fell they vanished into the darkess of Mordor.'' - - -rotk, chapter III

May the grace of Manw let us soar with eagle's wings!

In the air, among the clouds in the sky
Here is where the birds of Manwe fly
Looking at the land, and the water that flows
The true beauty of earth shows
With the stars of Varda lighting my way
In all the realms this is where I stay
In the realm of Manw Slimo
