... thanks for the link. I've come round more to the idea of Martin Freeman recently as it looks as if it might be him, but it really amused me to see that the three people who've commented on this story so far all want to see the same actor as I do playing Bilbo - Tom Hollander. He's absolutely made for the part. If Martin Freeman's timetable can't be re-organised I hope someone in the production will think of Tom Hollander - none of the other actors I've seen mentioned seem as Bilbo-ish to me....

Im not sure Martin Freeman would be right for Bilbo. I think he's great, he was perfect on the Office and he's a fine actor. I mean if they want to keep Bilbo in line with Ian Holm's performance, I dont really see the similarity. If they want to start fresh and make this Bilbo different from Holm's then he could be right for it. I think Hollander would be perfect though, he reminds me of Holm and he's got quite a range as an actor.

Tom Hollander would be a good call although would be really strange to see him in that kind of role as Ive only seen him in serious roles as Cutler Beckett in Pirates of the Carribean or in Valkyrie, according to IMDB he's already 'filming' in Lock Out due to be released in 2011.

It would be neat to see Ian Holm reprise his role and have his character computer generated like Gollum.

This line makes no sense to me... "Of interest is Freeman’s thoughts on an older actor portraying Bilbo Baggins" Freeman isn't an older actor..... Correction...the article says "slightly older actor," (compared to a new drama school grad)...ok. He has the look but I am on the fence if he can portray Bilbo...but, that is what actors are trained to do. If he is picked I am confident he will pull it off. My only concern is his personality. Not sure it matches Bilbo. Sir Ian, in my opinion, nailed it.

If the production are interested in him to play Bilbo (or so i've read here somewhere), and he is willing to give a go, then what's keeping them from getting something done?

Ignoring for the moment that Ian Holm was too old to play Bilbo in the first place I think that Martin Freeman would do great. If you've seen him as Authur Dent in HHGTTG you might agree (unless you hated the movie ).

reports that Freeman's agents are trying to hammer out a schedule that will allow him to play both parts or something? Is that still likely to happen?

The cartoon has already been made. It is bad enough that a good portion of the (3-D) movie will be computer generated/enhanced.

I didn't think of that. Anyone seen the Tron Legacy trailer? They made Jeff Bridges look 30 years younger.

"My only concern is his personality. Not sure it matches Bilbo." You must understand that acting is all about assuming a character with a personality of its own. Ian McKellen's personality is not Gandalf's he is acting. You appear to be use to movie stars like John Wayne where the parts were pretty much written for John Wayne. Watching Mr. Freeman in the new Sherlock Series has convinced me that he is in deed the man to step into Bilbo's shoes.

If Ian Holm gave his performance through motion capture, then Holm would be giving Bilbo a personality all of his own, just like Serkis did with Gollum. If Ian Holm wasnt up to task at 79, then they could use a motion capture double and he could voice the digital Bilbo. I am sure that they could base the face around a younger Ian Holm. Rob

Or just make The Hobbit using the same technical approach that they used for 300 or Tron or Avatar for that matter. What is wrong wit making The Hobbit the way PJ and company made The Lord of the Rings?

Well Gollum was central to LOTR and he was a digital creation of motion capture technology. So if they created a digital Bilbo that would be in the same spirit as Gollum, and in line with Jacksons LOTR Jackson and Spielbergs Tintin is all digital, through the art of motion capture.

When i brought up the Jeff Bridges thingy, i wasn't exactly being serious for the Hobbit to do the same. I want a real live person to portray Bilbo. Freeman is my top favorite. That's what actors are for. It would be sad for now computers to take over actors' job.

That could be an option actually, Andy Serkis could do the motion capture performances of both characters and Holm could voice it. The technology already exists so there is little cost. Just an idea.
