Yes please, Jackson and Blomkamp working together can create wonders ( and I liked District 9 way more than anything from overrated Del Toro )

... but as you know, Neill's name was bandied about back when GDT left, so it's not really "new news" and might be a rehash of those rumours. On the other hand, the article does say "local sources", so there might be some truth to it.

The investors (especially the backers of the reborn MGM) will want a sure thing. Neill is young, has had a hit (but only one) and would be viewed as a huge gamble. On the other hand Peter Jackson...

... I really hope this one isn't true. No direspect to Neill Blomkamp, but it seems to me that after all these upheavals, a bit of certainty is what 'The Hobbit' needs.

I think most of us have been sorta' assuming PJ will in fact direct, but it's really still up in the air. I hope this isn't true too.

You know what? I've had enough. Blomkamp. Aliens. Whatever. It's almost become a bizarre form of mental abuse now that's pushed me beyond the point of caring. Blomkamp was already a news story and then debunked in favour of everything moving the way of PJ brokering a deal to direct himself (complete with headline news right here from Cameron & Del Toro saying that he should) months ago; and now we're right back here again? Jut like we are with the 7th extention wot-not with MGM? Like we are with the Bilbo casting? With Martin Freeman? Don't tell me - next week another Tennant or McAvoy rumour in a tabloid somewhere, followed by a tentative quote from McKellen about a start date and some dude from The X-Factor saying he auditioned as an elf. The whole thing's out of control. As a film fan, I've followed movies in their pre-production phases for nigh on 20 years and never in all that time (well, except maybe Gilliam's Don Quixote?) have I witnessed a mess as mind-numbing as this one. I have nothing against PJ and I still think that he's 100% a guy of absolute integrity, but can't help feeling that since the end of the more extensive fan interactions/updates etc. of the Del Toro tenureship , the onus was on him to act as a more consistent mouthpiece on the status of the project and he hasn't. And I don't mean "We haven't got a greenlight or a start date because of MGM" because he obviously can't magic-wand away that part of it. I mean: "We haven't got a greenlight or a start date because of MGM, but THIS is what we've been doing ..." There's also a strong case for an extensive sit-down or interview of sorts with TORN about what's what, and I'm miffed that hasn't happened by this stage either. Pete always struck me as more open and easy-going in his dealings with the press back in the Rings days; and maybe it's just me, but he does seem much more guarded and defensive now, though who could really blame him? The Lovely Bones got a kicking it didn't deserve, there's financial pressures from all quarters, and he also probably knows that if he did bow to the universal good will willing him into that director's chair, he'd be competing not only with his best work, but one of the most successful movie trilogies of all time and maybe setting himself up for a fall. But hey ... how the hell would I know, right? It's not my place to speculate. What I do know is it's closed shop and the bats are in the belfry. Unwittingly or otherwise, he's presided over chaos and allowed the press and speculation-mongers to become the official spokespersons for this train wreck. So forgive me if I'm stepping out of following it for a while and forgetting about this forum until the gourdian knot is split clean down the middle. My brain not melting depends on it. ______________

although I do have great faith and respect in Neil Blonkamp, and if PJ thought he was the guy to do the job, then that would be all the approval I would need as well. but, as it has also been said - this is something which has already passed over these boards before, and so I'm not sure about the source oe why it has come up again, unless it has been under consideration for some time and decisions are now closing on who will do what....

District 9 was a great story. He hit the ball out of the park with that one. I'm looking forward to District 10. But who knows if this is true or not eh?
King Arthur: Who are you who can summon fire without flint or tinder? Tim: There are some who call me... Tim. Tim: Follow. But. Follow only if ye be TORNsibs of valour, for the making of The Hobbit is guarded by a creature so foul, so cruel that no TORNsib yet has fought with it and lived. Bones of an A List veteran director lie strewn about its lair. So, brave TORNsibs, if you do doubt your courage or your strength, come no further, for Hollywood Studio Bureaucratic Ineptitude awaits you all with nasty, big, pointy teeth! No blame here, Chris. Sorry if it read that way. As I said, have nothing but respect for PJ, and it's not about integrity. I just think by this stage, would be a good idea for those in charge of the project to quash the endless rumours-mills, stories and counter-stories spinning this thing yet again way out of control. We've had literally years of it now, and enough is really enough. Of course, they can't give solid casting and start date details until they're budgeted & greenlit, but they can voice their intent a little better than they have - and that at least would stop us having to listen and second guess our way through an endless world of misinformation until our ears bleed. So as producer, guess that falls to him. Now I'm gone! ______

I'm sure you're reading the thread in flat mode. But not everyone does. Threaded mode (the alternate choice from 'Flat Mode') allows one to see which post in particular you are replying to by using a series of indents. I think you meant to reply to chrismortega since you start your post by addressing your remarks to 'Chris'. But you hit reply to Tim's message so it looks like (to those of us reading in threaded mode) that you are talking to Tim. The best practice is to hit "Reply to this Post" on the specific post you mean to reply to. It was obvious in your case so it only result in a moment's confusion as I sorted it out and no harm at all was done. But it can be more confusing in other situations so it's worth becoming aware of this feature. :-) To switch between the two different view modes, find a button on the top right of the post or thread that either says, "View Threaded" or "View Flat Mode". You can set, in your preferences, which you want to be the default. (I love threaded for most cases but I'm a holdover from the old message boards) If you have more questions, feel free to explore them in the Feedback section.

Until the mess with MGM is actually and officially taken care of, until there is an official green light for the movies, I'm skeptical to say the least. I don't personally know any of the people involved, so I'll not vouch for their integrity or what-not, I just want these movies in production. When that happens I'll start believing what I'm reading.

I have only District 9 to consider and like PJ when he was tapped to do LOTR I had not seen Heavenly Creatures. There is always some element of doubt if the person to direct can pull it off. IF the story is accurate I would have to assume that his freedom will be quite limited due to the pre-production and script. I am sure PJ would have alot of control over the process and need for re-shoots etc. However, it appears he trusts Neil and that may be well placed. I agree the studios want and NEED a hit. However, they too have to trust the team and not insert their fat fingers into the batter before it is done.

I don't think people should react to every news story that comes up. Until something is concrete fact - there's zero point getting so upset about rumours. There's been so many conflicting stories about casting and directors.. there is not point being upset or excitied at this point. Patience is all we need.

LOVE District 9 and Blomkamp, and with PJ at the producer's helm, and GDT's designs, and Martin Freeman as Bilbo, this may shape up to topple even LOTR as the greatest fantasy films of all time. I've not been particularly kind in my feelings towards PJ since ROTK, which was such a disappointment and on several levels (though I think Kong was excellent). I think the stress got to all of them with that third script and film. PJ's an otherwise excellent filmmaker, and with him and Blomkamp working together, we have an ideal situation before us.

Though I enjoyed District 9 enough, do we want Mr. Blomkamp to be handed a project to shoot that, to him, is just work? I think one of the main reasons the trilogy worked, even with it's flaws, is that PJ had an intimate knowledge of and love for the source material. Perhaps at this point PJ may be looking at the Hobbit through "work" eyes but maybe when he gets settled into shooting and whatnot he will remember how much he loved the story in the first place. As I've stated before, I don't want these films to be made just to be made. If we're having to settle for directors, cast, lower budget and who knows what else, wouldn't it be better to wait for the day when these books are re-visited on film in the way that they deserve to be?

Hmm, if Blomkamp is not a fan of the book and IF he said such a film would be "just work" then I would hope for someone else to direct. Was he quoted saying this?

IF Peter Jackson doesn't direct and if he has any say in who directs The Hobbit (it seems he does) I trust him not to pick a director who just looks at The Hobbit as "work". I watched the "making of" stuff for District 9 and Blomkamp is a director who really throws himself into his "work".
King Arthur: Who are you who can summon fire without flint or tinder? Tim: There are some who call me... Tim. Tim: No I don't talk about my love life for a very good reason, and that reason is I don't have one. Which is very good news for the ladies-I am still available. I'm a heck of a catch, cos, er well look at it. I live in Slough, in a lovely house, with my parents. I have my own room, which I've had since yep, since I was born. That's seen a lot of action I tell you. Mainly dusting. I went to university for a year as well, before I dropped out, so I'm a quitter. So, er, form an orderly queue ladies.

I'm not quoting him I'm just remembering how much PJ loved these books and how much effort he put into making the films happen because of it. You can tell he was also a fan of the Ralph Bakshi animated version as some of the scenes are shot quite similarly. I don't know if Mr. Blomkamp has read the books or what he thought of them if so. He may well do an ok job of directing but I personally would like to stick with someone who is as big a fan of the books as PJ is.

I really want PJ to direct. I liked District 9, but this guy doesn't seem like he would be the right choice for Middle-earth. Just have PJ direct and everyone will be happy. I thought with GdT outta the picture PJ would definitely step up and direct. I still hope he does...
