A discussion of Fantasy, my proposal

Hello all! Back in March, in my birthday mathom, I promised two series of threads this year. The Mexico from A to Z is well underway, and I hadn't begun with the second one: A Fantasy Discussion. Since I read Professor Tolkien's On Fairy Stories, my naural interest for Fantasy and its workings grew. I found that Tolkien's essay focused on the deepest motifs and reasons of fantasy, an almost philosophical treatment to the genre, and perhaps, its first and foremost rigorous definition. I do not mean to take this discussion as a way to argue Tolkien's lecture. I also do not intend to question any of its assumptions or to quote it extensively. I have not the knowledge to do so, and I know where it's fitting some of you will be able to reference it in a better way. Taking the essay as a reflection and starting point, I want to discuss a whole other array of points, which simply aren't included in said essay. Not because Tolkien overlooked them, but because they were out of his scope of interest or hadn't yet come to pass. After several months of thinking, I have found the topics I wanted to discuss and a logical strcture in which o discuss them. While the proper threads would begin on Monday, I would like to share with you the overall layout of what I intend, in order to get your feedback, and so that you might indentify what you would like to say on any given matter in advance. So withourt further ado, here is my proposed 5 week Fantasy Discussion (please note this will most likely be dynamic, it's bound to change depending on how the discussion goes): 1. On Fantasy (1 week) 1.1. Relation of Reality, Fantasy and History 1.2. Degrees of fantasy and reality within fantasy 1.3. Where does believability in fantasy dwell/lie? 2. On the elements of a Fantasy Novel (2 weeks) 2.1. Typecast fantasy: Wizards, Elves, Dwarfs, Orcs and Dragons 2.2. Archetypes and molds 2.2.1. Archetypes 2.2.1.1. The supernatural evil 2.2.1.2. The unlikely hero 2.2.1.3. Merlin 2.2.2. Recurring stories 2.2.3. The fantasy novel storyline 2.2.3.1. The physical journey 2.2.3.2. The final battle 2.3. How much is too much in Fantasy? 2.3.1. Languages 2.3.2. Maps 2.3.3. Back story 2.3.4. Detail and precision 3. The new reality of fantasy in a commercial and multimedia world. (2 weeks) 3.1. On publishing 3.1.1. How long is an epic? The necessity of editing. 3.1.2. Film and Illustration vs. Imagination: Should fantasy be physically represented? 3.1.3. On market targets and classification: Children, Young Adult and Fantasy. 3.2. New outlets: Film and videogames 3.2.1. Validity of film and videogame fantasy vs. books. 3.2.2. Films and videogames as sources for new fantasy 3.2.3. Interactivity and immersion 3.3. On money, collectiveness and copyright 3.3.1. Who does a story belong to, its creator or its fans? 3.3.2. On the growth and cultural absorption of myth and legend 3.3.2.1. Expanded Universe and related media 3.3.2.2. Fan fiction EDIT: sorry, I cannot create adequate tabs for the index. More detail on each point would obviously be included in the introduction for a particular discussion. Some points are naturally not explained to their utmost detail, but that can be achieved during the discussions. So what do you think? I believe this discussion can be quite enlightening and interesting. I hope you can join me in this discussion!

is it off topic? It's not clear from the outline that it's about Tolkien.

One could use Tolkien's corpus...

from a comparative basis throughout the discussion; thus it remains on topic but allows for a wider dialogue on the genre as a whole. If you look at the outline, there is really not one topic that would preclude Tolkien. I find the proposal intriguing. Excellent job, Compa!

it's more for Off Topic than the Reading Room. I'm looking forward to this discussion. Compa, do you have any idea what you've let yourself in for?
Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..." Dwarves: "Pretty rings..." Men: "Pretty rings..." Sauron: "Mine's better." "Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded b*****d with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak.
