Did You Ever Notice... Eowyn's Ice Blue Coat? Can't Post

In contrast to Theoden's ratty old pajamas, Eowyn's are rather more glamorous. Smile

Two simple layers to this costume. The underdress is the same dress she wore to the victory party earlier in the movie (under her victory gown). It's a patterned material, likely a silk.

And over we get this ice blue wool coat with fur around the collar. It's lined in cream wool and the sleeves are turned back to show off some of the lining.

As always, more details over at AlleyCatScratch and The Costumer's Guide.

Any thoughts?

Did You Ever Notice? is a running series taking a look at some of the detail Ngila Dickson and Grant Major put into the costumes of LOTR, one costume at a time. It appears on no particular day and follows no particular order. Look for it when you see it. You can always find previous discussions over at my Costume Discussion Archive.

I really want to touch this coat. [In reply to] Can't Post

Something about the texture has my hands itching to touch the material and luxuriate in its feel. The colour, too, is so beautiful - and a great contrast from the rich browns and reds, and dark greens, that dominate the films' costumes.

If I had this for a night-robe I wouldn't be taking it off while inside the house!

Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..."
Dwarves: "Pretty rings..."
Men: "Pretty rings..."
Sauron: "Mine's better."

"Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded b*****d with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak.

Congratulations [In reply to] Can't Post

and welcome! Hope you like it here!

Turning to your topic, I was interested to notice the contrast in the first two subject lines of the thread: "ice" in yours and "warm" in Oiotari's.

Sounds like a great example of the conflicting sides of Eowyn - the "ice maiden" on the outside who also has a warm, emotional core. This costume seems to sum up so much of what Eowyn is about. She shows her warm side to Aragorn in the intimate scene where she wears this gown - her defences are down after her dream - and I think it's one of the steps on the way to her falling in love with him and allowing her emotions to overcome the cool control she has been maintaining up to now.

(This is different from the book, where at least according to Eomer, it was only after she fell for Aragorn that she turned to "ice". Even in the book, though, it may be that Eomer just hadn't noticed before how much she had been hiding her own needs beneath her cool exterior, as she coped with Theoden's growing madness, Theodred's death and Grima's plotting.)

They went in, and Sam shut the door.
But even as he did so, he heard suddenly,
deep and unstilled,
the sigh and murmur of the Sea upon the shores of Middle-earth.

Happy Valinoration Day! [In reply to] Can't Post

Time to put on your cap and gown...wait, that''s not right...

**digs through Arwen's Daughter's costume trunk...**

Ah, this is better -- here, put on this circlet of silver and a mantle of blue.

There, that's better! And congratulations! Smile

nice but impractical! [In reply to] Can't Post

I guess this is the equivalent of Rohan-lingerie - designed for when you want to look fetching whilst sleeping by a firepit in the hopes that a man who would be king will wander in and...

Oh dear, where was I...

More seriously, it is a very classically romantic look, especially against that backdrop, so I can see why they came up with it.. the first image you posted looks like it was lifted from a painting by Rembrandt or Goya or one of those famous guys who did paintings like that!

Do we walk in legends or on the green earth in the daylight?

A man may do both. For not we but those who come after will make the legends of our time. The green earth, say you? That is a mighty matter of legend, though you tread it under the light of day!

What I always thought funny [In reply to] Can't Post

just look at how long the dress and the coat are. And still she manages to get her feet from underneath it and Aragorn has to cover them again. I always wondered about that.

Further I really love this dress/coat. The wonderful pale blue and the warm fur collar. I also love the "party" dress that goes with it. The embroidery on the front.

The pattern on the dress is really wonderful. I think it is always amazing that on the one hand you can't really see the pattern, but on the other hand it does give extra texture to the entire dress.

I love this coat, [In reply to] Can't Post

fabulous work done on it. For some reason it makes Eowyn look even more sad to me. Great choice for the scene.
