On Monday we got word that my 89-year-old granny took a nasty fall and my sister and I drove the 8 hours to Evansville, Indiana today to visit her in the hospital. I had a few minutes with her just a short while ago, but she was pretty tired and kicked us out of the room. So, it's been a long day for me. I'll just sneak behind the bar and mix myself something fruity and alcoholic. I'm told that she looks better today, but she still looks like she lost a prize fight. I was shocked when they turned on the lights in her room and I was able to see the bruising on her face.

When I was a kid my Mom was 23 (happens to be the year BEFORE she bore me!) until I was nine or ten when her brother said, "Oh no! If I have to be 42 then you have to be 33!" Not sure when mom forgave him for that one!

The "she" being Julie Newmar as "Eleen" in "Friday's Child", aka Catwoman (the second incarnation of that character). Not exactly a favorite episode of mine, but it did have some great Kirk-Spock-McCoy moments! But I don't recall her being in any other episodes...

Good on you for adopting a greyhound. He looks calm and happy. Does he like to run when he gets a chance or is he perfectly happy being a couch potato? I think it's great that those dogs can make the switch with such apparent ease from being racers to being house dogs. Give him a pat for me!

I was thinking of Yvonne Craig who was Batgirl (your answer wasn't one of the "good guys" even if Julie was the most amorous of the 3 Catwoman actresses towards Batman). Yvonne was also the Orion Marta in the ST TOS episode "Whom Gods Destroy"

my American sensibilities have yet to discover the point of eating yams. NZS insists on boiling them, and I think they taste like pureed cardboard. Is there something better to do to them, or are they supposed to taste like pureed cardboard? Lucky you to see blue sky. I saw the merest hint of it a couple days ago, then the skies closed over again and the deluge continued. Have you been having as much rain as we've had? Enjoy Lost tonight!

In January of 2009 my then-97 year-old grandmother had a "mini-stroke" and fell and broke her hip. The docs said she might not live and would never walk again. Seven months later grandma was walking and BACK IN HER OWN HOUSE - the only difference being she lives with 24/7 nursing care. Next month she'll be 99 and from the reports I get she might well become the 1st family centenarian next year. I hope your grandmother does as well and my thought and good wishes go with her, you, and your family. <busily lights all the candles he can find for AD and family>

and a few pats of butter, with some crumbles of brown sugar, now that's the way to serve yams! Great to see you again, Ro! A couple of days ago I was looking through some printouts I'd made of certain TORn posts from days gone by, and came across some of your logic puzzles - if it's okay with you, I'm thinking of re-posting them? (Giving you the credit, or notoriety, of course!)

I don't think you'd want to candy *these* yams! They're not the nice sweet, sweet-potato-like yams like in the U.S. They're more like...hmmm...swollen, orange, almost transparent, nubbly roots, shaped and sized a bit like a large ginger root. Okay, that's not a very helpful description, but they're an entirely different thing than the yams of the U.S., and I sure haven't yet discovered the point of eating them. Cute horse, that White-socks! Is he yours?

Okay, really, whoever asked for an end to the drought, you got your wish, but this is enough already! We have had SIX straight days of RAIN, and I'm not talkin' your indecisive drizzly bits of rain followed by some dark clouds. The only variation has been whether it's raining hard, or outright downpouring, with a bit of hail mixed in a few times for good measure. And there's no end in sight yet. Everything is muddy, saturated, waterlogged, or just plain underwater. Enough already! And to top off my week, two nights ago I came home from work feeling lousy and achey and discovered I had a high fever. I crawled in bed. My sick dog, who's been going downhill fast, for the first time refused his dinner. Later, I dragged myself out of bed to send an overdue work email. As I was working on that, NZ Toddler (age 2 1/2) was discovered completing an extensive art project -- involving himself, the carpet, his favorite snuggly (without which he can't sleep), a few toys, and the contents of his dirty diaper. After a major cleaning project, NZ Toddler was put in bed, where he howled for about 20 minutes because he didn't have his beloved Lambkins. What a night. I'm feeling better today, but I sure could use some sunshine! Enjoy your picnic, Altaira, and I do hope everyone else's weekends are off to better starts than mine!
