made my dad switch to it sometime in the mid-late 1960's for health reasons. Of course, now we know it's worse than butter!

all long body and limbs tangled up in a lap! I knew that Greyhounds were gentle and friendly, but he's got a double dose of those! Did you name him, or did he have the name already? School ends on the 21st for me...then I have that whole Library to myself for inventory and other maintenance stuff, what fun... Yes, unfortunately, the older kids get, the "wiser" they become. Are you taking a family vacation anywhere this year?

it was Craigey Dusty. We named him Brego because he's very regal. We're headed for RI and NH at different times over the summer. How about yourself?

I thought I remembered Aunt Dora mentioning her parents and the Big Thompson flood a couple of time previously - here's links to how they escaped, and to how they were rescued. Do you have that photograph online anywhere, Aunt Dora?

We have adopted some servicemen, but I think getting the kis on Skype is a terrific idea! Mind if I snatch it and bring it to the attention of someone up here? It may be something to look into for the fall. We have an ongoing program at the school in order to promote good manners and have people come in every Thursday to eat lunch with the kids. They use place settings, etc. and really practice eating properly. Everybody loves it.

I bet even he prefers his new name! No plans yet - we're trying to get the kids' schedules in line, those three are going to be in and out all summer, away for chunks of time and doing lots of things while here. Our youngest now has her own small apartment out in Chicago, so she'll only be back for two weeks! Rhode Island? Whereabouts?

because one Board of Ed member got deployed to Iraq for a year! This is how he attends meetings. He's also the dad of two boys at the school, and all the kids and he had a wonderful time with the questions-and-answers. We put the little "eyeball" computer camera up on a mic stand and elevated it, so he could see the whole group. And we projected him from the laptop onto a large screen. Formal luncheons! Now that is classy!

They climbed up the hillside in blinding rain, and a minute later their car went down the river. They were airlifted out the next day by helicopter. Twenty-five years later I got to meet that man and thank him. Here's a poem I wrote about him: Butch "Next time there's a flood, I'm calling in sick." Big strong hand shakes mine, Eyes crinkle over a graying beard. "It was no big deal. Lucky I was there, that's all. If I hadn't stopped for that beer in Estes I'd a' been caught in the Narrows. Funny how a little thing, One tiny moment Can change the next thirty years. "The water roared up under the road behind me Like a movie monster, Buckling the blacktop as I ran down the canyon. Rain so hard you could drown Just breathing it. Put my head down And it made a tunnel of air to breathe. "In the dark I passed a car. Dang! There's people inside! That can't be good. I wasn't gentle— Pushed 'em up the mountain. Wouldn't let 'em get their coats. Car washed away soon as they got out. "Scene in the cabin was worse 'n any horror movie. Little girl with big eyes Shining in the dark. Pink streaks on her face: Tears through the blood. "Her mama--I've seen better color on a corpse. Arm was broke almost all the way off. I put on a tourniquet, Got her to the helicopter. I was sure she was a goner. "Didn't read the obituaries-- Didn't want to know. That's why I didn't come to the ten-year. Afraid I'd find out-- Afraid I could a' done more. "But at the twenty-year reunion, Something pulled me, Made me decide to come. Got out of the car, and there she was! I couldn't believe it. "There she is now. Still got her arm, and it works too. Miracles do happen. "Still don't like the rain, much. Don't even like my water glass too full. When it sprinkled tonight, I was ready to climb the mountain. But I'm glad about your folks. It was no big deal." We shake his hand, my sister and I. Mom sits smiling up at him, remembering. It was a big deal, Butch. One tiny moment thirty years ago, A young man banging on a car window, And grandchildren growing up Loving grandparents they might never have known. "Yep," he says, "Lucky. You might a' been lighting candles tonight, And instead, here we are. But next time there's a flood, I'm calling in sick. Still don't like the rain." August 1, 2006 [based on a conversation with Butch Hutchins Big Thompson Flood memorial service Drake, Colorado, July 31, 2006]

That's a "Thank God It's A Low Humidity Weekend!" Got the fish pond cleaned out and refilled, the air-conditioner repositioned in the window, more heirloom tomato plants at the Master Gardeners' sale, a new AIO printer to install, another load of horse cr*p...and probably a camper floor to replace tomorrow. Lots of planting to be done, too. The wild roses are almost over, but I've got some tucked in my pocket to scent the air everytime I move. It'll be just honeysuckle on the night air now...lovely honeysuckle...

hold the horses. What a heinous, heinous work week it's been. However today I can actually see some blue sky (woo-hoo!) and tonight is the series finale of LOST! The phone will be going off the hook at 9.30 tonight - can't wait. :) Now off to dig up the last of the potatoes and first of the yams.
Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..." Dwarves: "Pretty rings..." Men: "Pretty rings..." Sauron: "Mine's better." "Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded b*****d with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak.
