Ricky Gervais & Stephen Merchant on Tolkien (and Shakespeare)

Perhaps this has been posted before, but if anyone cares I found a snippet of Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant (and to a lesser extent Karl Pilkington) talking about the premier of The Return Of The King from XFM 104.9's The Ricky Gervais Show, as aired on December 13th 2003. Which soon turns into a discussion on Shakespeare. Free domain, so no worries. http://www.mediafire.com/...load.php?ntznmmgwlim

It's hard to respond to that kind of criticism without coming off like an overzealous fan but I didn't hear anything insightful (or particularly new) there. Don't get Gervais started on David Bowie who he thinks is as good as Shakespeare and Bach combined.

No deep meaning to find here, I just happen to be a rabid fan of both Gervais and Tolkien, and found it amusing to hear one comment on the other. Nothing else.

As I said, I'm not one of the die-hards who can't stand to hear criticism of something I like. I think it's interesting to see that most people who go out of their way to disparage LOTR just don't like anything with "trolls and monsters and that kind of thing". I'm in the opposite camp - I'm not a huge fan of the genre Tolkien gets lumped into but I believe LOTR rises above.

I'm the same - love Tolkien but have never managed to finish anything by another "fantasy" author in my life.
