Moviefone: Peter Jackson Dispels 'Hobbit' Rumors, Confirms Finished Screenplay Can't Post

http://insidemovies.moviefone.com/...t-rumors-screenplay/

excerpts:

Quote
We've just delivered the script. Literally last week, we delivered the second of the two screenplays -- the first draft. So the studio's got both scripts now, which is a milestone; and if anything was holding it up, it was us doing the screenplays, because we'd just been writing as fast as we can, but it took us this long to get them finished.

----

I'd be pretty optimistic that we'll be shooting before the end of the year. I would imagine October, November, we'd be shooting by. I'm not announcing it, though.

---

We haven't signed any actors up yet, because we couldn't do that until they greenlight the movie. But I would imagine that if we get a green light within the next month or two, we would be hopefully making some casting announcements by, I guess, the middle of the year.

---

Q: You keep reading announcements like, "They're definitely going to have these three actors from the previous films ..."
I know, I know. No, there's no definite ... I mean, any character that's returning from 'The Lord of the Rings,' we obviously would love the same actors to play. But even those actors haven't been approached yet, or there [haven't] been any deals done. And the studio wouldn't organically do any of that until they've greenlit the film.

Wow. This is fantastic. This should calm down the most of us down a little.

because it's not all far-fetched and rumour-like.
It's just very very nice to hear something from the proverbial horse's mouth, that just lets us know that things are still happening, and moving, however silently and slowly!

I find it curious [In reply to] Can't Post

We know we are waiting for the MGM situation to settle itself out. Period. The reason they haven't turned in the script sooner? Because they can sit on it and tweak it here and there. I firmly believe it was ready to go a while ago.

<>

The writer doesn't understand that Warners/MGM will give the greenlight, and probably more Warners (parent of New Line) than MGM.

This is a good find Magpie but the fact still remains everything is completely depending on what happens with MGM. GDT and PJ and Weta have been ready to go for some time.

The REAL question is, how the HECK does Moviephone get to talk to PJ when everybody else wants to.?

I'm not sure PJ is being absolutely 'honest' [In reply to] Can't Post

He says (or at least moviefone says and let's hope they wouldn't fabricate this in any way):
we obviously would love the same actors to play. But even those actors haven't been approached yet

Really? Why is Ian McKellen feeling so free to talk about it, then? All I can figure is that the word 'approached' is in some legal, official, binding way. I just find it hard to believe that Sir Ian has not be approached in any manner.

This sounds like someone in an official position being a bit confined about what he can say and what he can't. Or what he can admit to or what he can't.

I also wondered... why the heck wasn't this interview with TORn?! Who is moviefone in the world of Middle-earth fandom?

;-)

Dissapointing... [In reply to] Can't Post

So, I think we can safely say that the first film won't be coming out until December 2012, with the second in December 2013. I think as the projected March/April start date for shooting came and went, this became somewhat apparent, but it's disheartening to hear it from PJ. All well...since these will likely be the last Rings-related films for a while, at least we'll have something to look forward to for a bit longer...

Yeah... [In reply to] Can't Post

..but doesn;t it seem like an *awful* long time from the completion of the ist script, to the 2nd script? Are we SURE the studio didn;t have problems with the 2nd script? Then again, considering what it is they;re attempting to do with the 2nd film, maybe the 2nd script really did take from Sept to April to write. Crazy

All has fallen quiet on the MGM front, though,,, there was a burst of activity a short while ago, and now "within the next few days" is passing...hopefully things will heat up again on the MGM front very soon.

.... there's an alternative there - either they haven't been approached at all or (surely implied by the part I've italicized) they have been approached informally, but until there's a green light nothing can be signed and sealed.

McKellen is touring doing Godot and is booked until July .. [In reply to] Can't Post

Though Im sure he'll be pestered relentlessly about the Hobbit when he hits Australia in May/June, and then New Zealand in July ...
I think he's incrediable and has great endurance - to be travelling the world doing stage, I'd say he is very much able to do The Hobbit - and he has done enough interviews about receiving the first Hobbit script to make us feel he's not letting 'us' down - he'll be there if need be. Smile

And just a heads up for Waiting for Godot if you're in Australia or New Zealand:
http://www.waitingforgodottheplay.com/

I still think if the end of the year releases are still on the table it might be the end of 2013 and 2014.
and it was rumoured October was a near start date a while back. I posted that a few months back.

Gandy will ride again Im sure Smile

Exactly right. [In reply to] Can't Post

It appears none have been officially 'approached' yet, which means reading the script with their proffered role in mind, saying 'yes' officially with the proviso that the financial deal is acceptable. And THEN the representatives of both sides talk money etc. That can take weeks, even months.

regarding the word 'approached' [In reply to] Can't Post

I understand (and think I even addressed) the distinction that gets applied to the word 'approached' when talking in industry specific language. But it's a word, like many, that can mean something in an specific, field-related way or something much less specific in a common usage sort of way.

If one is speaking to a broad audience (as opposed to a field specific audience), then I think it behooves one to understand this and indicate specificity in their language. That is, one does not assume that the general public will hear the word 'approach' in an industry specific way so one clearly specifies that they are using the word 'approach' in an industry specific way.

When I put 'honest' in quotes like I did, it was to qualify that word a little. I don't think he's been dishonest. I just don't feel that his use of the word approach was completely forthcoming. I think he was using deliberately vague language to dance around the issue a little. And I think he's dancing because of legal restrictions placed on him by the process. I don't see his dancing as avoidable at this stage.

I might also say that, the average reader at TORn will be quick to pick up the nuance of the word 'approach' here but I don't think the average reader at a number of other sites would be so quick. They'll read 'approach' and understand it in the common language usage sort of way.

My comment was meant to encourage people to sense PJ's dancing and deliberately vague-ish language.
