I feel obliged to tell you that not all fans... of Tolkien's, of the movies, and of you... are 'hacked off'. Some of us are feeling quite patient that things will progress when they are meant to progress... that no one is out to intentionally mess with our heads, disrespect us, or destroy our lives... and that we have other things to occupy our attention while circumstances are sorted out so that things can proceed. And some of us have learned that sometimes the outcome of delays is that something even better manages to come about. Reference Doug Adams' situation with his book due out this fall on the LOTR film music. The only problem is, those of us of the patient persuasion are not nearly so vocal as the those who find themselves in a different state of existence on this matter. Please know that the most vocal are not necessarily the only voice. And that some of us would be appalled to speak to another as some people here seem quite comfortable speaking. Best wishes. Your friends are with you.
Magpie, I can't help feeling that's a pretty thinly veiled attack. Especially as I stated quite clearly in a follow up comment, before Guillermo's appearance here, words to the effect of, quote: "I agree there's an air of impatience to what I've said, and paradoxically I also entirely agree with the people here who've stressed patience and everything in good time etc. when that's entirely my life philosophy. I also don't think GDT owes us minute-by-minute disclosure really, and has always been incredibly gracious and inclusive re: the fanbase on these things when he DOES have something to tell us - more than most directors that's for sure." My "buts ..." and being "hacked off" were largely wrapped up in repetition of the reportage, the endless Bilbo casting rumours, the stop & start etc of, quote: "a corporate dragon outside of their (i.e:the film-makers) control." And whilst I did indulge a little pointless dry humour & whimsy, at no point was it an idle and/or spiteful attack in the way you have alluded. If I'm wrong about your intent there, I apologise, but it just struck me, especially in the light of GDT's appearance, as a lightning attempt to affirm your own loyalties in a needless "us " and "them" scenario and make my comments seem underhanded or inauthentic somehow when I too, am a huge fan of this man's work. Dunno ... just a hunch. Where I was outright WRONG, for example about the 3D debate causing delays, etc, I'm glad to be proven so. I make no secrets about not being a fan of Avatar, whether or not I'm in the minority on that score. But it's also pretty clear that on the acting & scripting front, The Hobbit would inevitably be stronger than Cameron's film if it eventually went that route, so my qualms with the whole process (i.e: largely coming from a place of concern about the wow factor being a distraction to solid story-telling) would also come under question. Perhaps if The Hobbit can balance both where imo Avatar didn't, that will be its calling card as a superior 3D experience, I don't know. I'm an old fashioned git and I like my old fashioned movies. As for Guillermo's intervention here, well, maybe the Michael Bays of this world would have launched into a fairly unpleasant tirade calling me an armchair critic by this point, so frankly any use of the word 'empathy' confirms the character of the man. Alright, that was for Bill not me, but you get the general idea. A gentleman. Especially when it's basically the cyber equivalent of someone who's never stepped foot in your house and doesn't know you, telling you to get a move on with decorating your living room when they can't see the pots of gloss emulsion or rollers stacked up on the newspaper covered floor. Or the fact your landlord had just put the damn house on the market anyway. Annoying. [Faun] So God bless you, sir. [/Faun.]
Life's ironic. You sing the praises of a director, his predecessor and their films on other messageboards for Donkey's years, and the one time you get negative, they make a personal appearance. I'll have to live with that one. Any regrets? Not really. I blame no one for messing with my head though Magpie except Punxsutawney Phil ... Ned Ryerson ... Garfield, maybe ...

Magpie's statement has a bit of the old NARF buried in it. Just after you posted the original I posted "Nice summary :)" and I meant it. Your empassioned statement spoke aloud the darker thoughts that many of us had in the middle of the night when we woke up sweating. Sometimes it is better to get it out, to exorcise the daemons and feel better. Maybe you will get a better landlord.

It'll "ONLY" take about 300 million, no "couple billion" to do this thing right! No worries, mellon! I don't think I've ever been groupie enough to be on a fan site where the director drops by to give hope when the going is painfully slow, but I surely appreciate it. But if I hit the Powerball tonight I'm right with ya on makin' a "donation"! Something wonderful and un-looked-for will come of this...

Meant to add (damn that disappearing edit function!) that since empathy means to understand and identify with another person's lot and feelings on a matter, I think it's due, ultimately, in only one direction. What can I say: Alice in Wonderland, TF, Terminator IV, Indy IV, Clash of The Titans ..... we wait so many years for these hugely vaunted projects that ultimately disappoint, we get a little cosy in our ranting about things being done right and not done over by the dollar sign, forgetting that at the eye of every storm, the creative stewards of the projects are often suffering the most. (Michael Bay excepted ) Fellowship aside, I can safely say Pan's Labyrinth was by far the most miraculous experience watching a film I've had this past decade - almost a mini operetta of what it means to survive by the inner life-support of your fantasies as a child. Everything was perfect: the lullaby, the performances ... the earthiness of the visuals reminded me more of the likes of the bugs & centipedes crawling out from under the tree roots in Fellowship than the more CG-heavy look of King & Towers, in fact. I guess my hoping for an unknown face as Bilbo is rooted in the joy of discovering Ivana Baquero or Federico Luppi for the first time in Guillermo's Spanish movies and the freshness that they brought to roles they occupied so utterly. Where the studio system was giving us our one millionth brattish "child-star" performance, we had Ivana's innocence. Where the studio system was giving us our millionth phoned-in Morgan Freemann narration, we had Luppi's sonorous voice discussing what it means to be a ghost. It was a breath of fresh air for me. Still is. So as a lover mainly of the Spanish works, and that perfect trio of Cronos>Backbone>Pan's, (wasn't sold on Hellboy, with regret) there's a big part of me hoping those sensibilities I love in him aren't stifled by any of this rigmarole, the studios, the money men, etc., or even household names. That said, I still wish this had been directed at Kingdom of The Crystal Dollar, or Bay over Buckformers. Del Toro for a mess out of his hands?!? Mental! By way of revenge, may I suggest a cameo from a stuffed Punxsutawney Phil in the background of a dwarves' cave or Orcs' armoury, c/o the Harold Ramis props department. Love and empathy, Damien. ___________________________

I haven't voiced my opinion on the boards for a while but... I now know 2 people who have read for Bilbo that I went to Drama school with and I can say categorically they are both entirely unknown outside of the world of theatre & bit TV parts. So...they ARE seeing and have seen unknowns and I would not be surprised if that is the route they take. I don't think we'll be seeing any big names for Bilbo or even for many of the Dwarves. The MGM affrairs - yeh they may well be causing delays but I cannot see that they would halt production altogether. I for one am almost glad that a 2011 release is looking less likely as then time can be taken on the edit to make it really tight. 3D - I would hope that if they do this they will be looking to develop avatar style technology even more. I personally thought it was a promising feast for the eyes although the writing was pretty poor can totally see. I just don't understand all these movies being changed from 2D to 3D for the sake of it...if you're going to do it...do it right from the start. Don't just convert it in a bog effort to make more £$. As for my own quest to get cast - well it seems this week may in fact be D-Day for me, according to the casting director - I'm excited to hear from Mr Taylor the extent that the world of the dwarf is going to be explored, I think having to cast 13 lends itself to creating 13 entirely unique dwarves, not all fat, gruff voiced & middle aged......I will share as much as I can when I know the details...but wish me luck! "Look for my coming on the 8th Month" ...And now I am silent once more... : D

Thanks for the snippet about the casting for Bilbo! So more things than just Hobbiton and Warg costumes are taking place behind the scenes...
Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..." Dwarves: "Pretty rings..." Men: "Pretty rings..." Sauron: "Mine's better." "Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded b*****d with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak. that you should give thought and time to come to TORN to soothe the jangling nerves. That such hopes rest with you is the price you pay for taking on a project that is so loved and longed for with such a passion. There may even be some here who are concerned that they will be around to see the final scenes on screen. PJ and yourself have given hope that a once only dreamed of thing may happen - a full and skillful Hobbit rendered to the screen. Whatever the arguments/discussions I am sure we all just wish to see you unleashed to create that magic. Then we can believe that nothing will stand in its way.

I'd be glad to know if they are casting a wide range of ages for the dwarves. Are some of them going to be quite young i.e. Fili and Kili? There has been endless speculation and discussion about what age Bilbo should appear but none so far (I think) of the dwarves' ages. If they generally live beyond 250 years of age and Fili and Kili are 82 and 77 years old what 'age', in human terms, does that make them?

... Good luck Oli! Btw, if Bilbo doesn't go to a complete unknown then I'd personally like to see it go to a jobbing actor who hasn't had that much of a big break until now. If you think of the most successful casting in the original trilogy - Viggo, inparticular - they were often actors who'd been doing the circuit for years but never really broken through. So my vote goes to Mr.Hugh Bonneville. Right age, enough of a vague resemblance to Holme, and just something a bit hobbity about him really, without being way too young and therefore forcing the transition to the first films out of kilter. I just can't see a fresh faced actor negating the "You haven't aged a day" problem really, given it's a major deal in Fellowship (and that he ages like Methusala once he's rid of the ring ...) Need a guy who can still handle the physical demands of the role that's in his mid to later forties, imo. And here he is ----->
and looking a little more Bilbo-esque here ....
Only problem is, whilst he's not exactly a giant, he's not exactly a half-pint either. Average height: 5 ' 9 or 10 or something? - maybe someone can correct me, I'm not sure. But hey - forced perspective n' all. Practically every other name suggested seems to me either a) too young, b) to have no (not even vague) physical similarity to Ian Holme, or c) be heavily associated with a previous role. Bonneville neatly vaults all three. ______________________________________
