When I first read the headline with the wording "webbed feet" I thought of a duck. What the heck? Spiders don't have feet. Legs, yes. Feet, no. Shelob might be a bit miffed at the disregard for her correct anatomical makeup. Tobey as Bilbo would be weird. Not bad, not good, just weird.

My 13year old comic book fan son debunked this rumor for me LOL! He started asking how is Tobey gonna do spiderman 4 and THE HOBBIT at the same time. He showed me his wizard magazine with Sam Raimi's interview that say S4 goes into production in 2010. I assured him that tobey will be sporting the spidey costume rather than sporting hairy feet.

I'm not sure I understand exactly what you mean by "Just as Ian McKellan IS Gandalf, Cate Blanchette IS Galadriel, and Elijah Wood IS Frodo, Martin Freeman IS Bilbo!" McKellan, Blanchette, and Wood performed in those roles, on film. So we have a basis for saying, or at least asserting, that they are the best possible actors for those roles. Did I miss an existing performance of Bilbo by Mr. Freeman, that would let us say the same for him?

The person was saying they see Freeman as Bilbo in the same way they see the others as the roles they played.

Exactly, 5x5. And in fact, I had been saying Cate Blanchette IS Galadriel since I first saw her in Elizabeth, long before I knew she'd been cast in the role (I think before I even knew they were filming LOTR). For Ian McKellan, it was the moment Gandalf rode onto the screen that my jaw dropped and I thought THAT's him! THAT's Gandalf! It was a very odd and wondrous moment, like seeing the book come to life in a way I didn't think possible. When the possibility of filming The Hobbit was first discussed, only one actor came to mind as the ultimate embodiment of that character: Martin Freeman. Anyone else will be a tremendous letdown and missed opportunity.

a marvelous surprise? Speaking as another Martin Freeman supporter, it would be as well to remember that there may be others out there as well or even better suited to the role but we just don't know them. They did a very impressive job of casting for LOTR, I have hopes that they will do as well for The Hobbit. I'd love to see MF cast, but even if he's not, I'm still going to keep an open mind and give GDT and PJ a chance to win me over to their choice.
Silverlode "Of all faces those of our familiares are the ones both most difficult to play fantastic tricks with, and most difficult really to see with fresh attention. They have become like the things which once attracted us by their glitter, or their colour, or their shape, and we laid hands on them, and then locked them in our hoard, acquired them, and acquiring ceased to look at them. Creative fantasy, because it is mainly trying to do something else [make something new], may open your hoard and let all the locked things fly away like cage-birds. The gems all turn into flowers or flames, and you will be warned that all you had (or knew) was dangerous and potent, not really effectively chained, free and wild; no more yours than they were you." -On Fairy Stories

As an elf or a human, McAvoy's got my support. He's not a Hobbit and he's sure as hell NOT Bilbo!

What's the issue with Ian Holm again?

The Hobbit clearly states that Bilbo is 50 years old. In Hollywood, we have people in their mid-twenties playing high school teenagers. Even if Holm is in his early 60's, I don't see a problem with him reprising the role. I mean they have footage of him already in the flashback sequences. Sorry ... just found out that he's 78. Nevertheless, they are not casting for Frodo and I don't see why they are insisting on selecting someone that doesn't fit the age bracket?

The Ian Holm question is one that has been turned over quite a few times... I think its just a simple matter of his age and the requirements for the part. Being almost 80, the trek to New Zealand, the demands of over a year of shooting (possibly more with re-shooting) and the physicality of the role might be too much to ask of the well loved and admired Mr. Holm.

I agree he's brilliant. I've loved everything he's done. But that doesn't mean someone else couldn't be brilliant in the role too. And I like the idea of an unknown because then the chances are greater that I will be watching BILBO, not an actor I admire playing Bilbo, y'know?

I would hate for him to play Bilbo. I think James McEvoy would make a wonderful choice for Bilbo as he's a tremendously talented actor, but apparently that's only wishful thinking. So I hope someone that appreciates Tolkein and is a REALLY taleneted actor should be cast. And no one from America can really play the part.

In reviewing who Martin Freeman is, I think he'd make a wonderful Bilbo Baggins. He's got the qualities that can make a Bilbo. And looks the part! Hope it works out for him. He truly deserves it. And honestly he's not too well known by name or even face over here in the States.
