I must admit I'm surprised "Lovely Bones" didn't receive more nominations. Regardless, I hope this gives a little more recognition to "Avatar" as being a "Weta Workshop film", and not just a "James Cameron film" as it's been talked about thus far. A lot of dear Weta friends poured their hearts into that project and should get the recognition they deserve.

I can't wait to see Tucci in TLB. On the one hand, I really don't like seeing people I like playing bad guys, but he's done them before. He can be down-right spooky! He's excellent at everything he does... so I'm delighted for him and his nomination! *still clapping*

"Avatar" will sweep all the effects awards from the Academy. We are hyper-aware of Weta around these parts but their work on Avatar will be hard to ignore when images hit the silver screen around the world!

That one was totally out of left field for me. Totally!! I wished, but never wished in an "Ray wishing on Evangeline" type of way for it to happen..("Princess and the Frog" ref there...) never thought it would happen in my wildest dreams.
But the fact that the HPFA picked Neil Blomkamp out of nowhere is FANTASTIC
-IMO, making $150+ million worldwide and 100+ of it in the US, with your debut efforts at director, is usually NOT guarantee of awards success, esp if it's a sci-film made by a South African director!) "Heavenly Creatures" was mostly a crime drama, and a true-life story to boot; more "Oscar-y" that way inspite of the FX..and PL was fantasy but also based in S. Civil War-- (always a thing the Academy likes--look at all the noms for Inglorious Basterds. yes, Oscar *loves* films about WW2-era.)
D9, on the other hand, in spite of being set in present-day SA, is pure sci-fi...no element of historical truth to it..pure fiction. So for it to get a nom for Screenplay is really remarkable.)
Best Origional Screenplay..it's the way PJ broke into the business in a big way, and Del Toro followed him the same way 10 yrs later with BOS nom for PL. Like the passing of the torch..wouldn;t it be fantastic to see NB, PJ's protege, follow in their footsteps?
This menas that D9 actually has a very good chance at getting a Best Origional Screenplay Oscar nomination. The Globes are very accurate awards precursors in some areas, other not so much. But for the Screenplay noms, in the past what's nominated usually matches what gets in. Of course, with 10 BP noms this yr, the rules might get changed a little....it's all "up in the air" right now...but we'll see.
As for TLB being snubbed...I am not surprised, to put it mildly. But "Crash", the Best Picture winner from 3 yrs ago (3 or 4 yrs ago), didn't even get a Best Picture nom at the Globes, nor did it get a Directing nom. So who knows what could happen. I stand by my comments earleir that the Oscars rarely award what is best, and are really a popularity contest in most years. If Jackson is indeed snubbed by his peers totally, in the non-FX categories, in a year when the BP slate is pushed to 10..it'll be embarrassing.
We'll see. But the race is interesting now...REALLY can't wait to see either Avatar now! 4 more days!
And Richard Taylor and had better buy a new dresser to store all his Oscars on! Can we say this man will have own more than God?! Onlly John Williams I think is in his league for most won by a single person...

Their song 'Winter' from Jim Sheridan's film 'Brothers' is nominated.I haven't heard the full version from the film but I have heard another version of the song.I wonder if they'll perform?

District 9 didn't receive more nominations, like Best Picture and Best Edition. It's a great film, with a marvellous edition and a very good casting, not to mention the terrific screenplay.

I enjoyed that video -- thanks.
I had to laugh, though, at the way it looked on my computer screen -- Jackson appears hobbit-sized next to Tarantino, and Cameron's hands and arms appeared ghostly white next to his face!
Either Jackson was slouching and it was very hot in that room, or someone slipped in some forced perspective scale work and very strange digital grading...
