Something is Coming...Later Can't Post

December 15th, 2009

The WB let me know that the exciting event planned for December 8th (tomorrow) has now been postponed for the 15th. We're still working on trying to gauge what the 'something' is...any thoughts? Post about it on our message board!

Hmm. [In reply to] Can't Post

Well, that makes me even more sure it has nothing to do with the Blu-Ray release. Why would you need to postpone an announcement of a release date some months in the future?

Either it's Hobbit news and details are still being ironed out or something isn't signed yet or it's a website and it's not quite ready to go live.

Just as long as it's good news when it comes....

Silverlode

"Of all faces those of our familiares are the ones both most difficult to play fantastic tricks with, and most difficult really to see with fresh attention. They have become like the things which once attracted us by their glitter, or their colour, or their shape, and we laid hands on them, and then locked them in our hoard, acquired them, and acquiring ceased to look at them.
Creative fantasy, because it is mainly trying to do something else [make something new], may open your hoard and let all the locked things fly away like cage-birds. The gems all turn into flowers or flames, and you will be warned that all you had (or knew) was dangerous and potent, not really effectively chained, free and wild; no more yours than they were you."

I agree [In reply to] Can't Post

Hope they start updating LOTR site or unveil The Hobbit official site. Or maybe some new LOTR game announcement? Many possibilities. But I am so mad that I have to wait ANOTHER WEEK... I was looking forward to tomorrow. But now.... Ah well, it'll make the week go by faster for me, anyway :D.

Hoping!! [In reply to] Can't Post

I figure it'll be good. They wouldn't put out ' something's coming' if it was negative I think?

It's official, God hates us! [In reply to] Can't Post

He used to love us, which is why he gave us both of the Tolkiens, and PJ and Friends. But recently he decided we're all a bowl of goblin droppings. I guess it could be worse: PJ and New Line could have never settled their financial debate. Or, JJ Abrams could be directing The Hobbit! Chris Pine as Bilbo!!!!

Well, it's certainly something important! [In reply to] Can't Post

Why postpone irrelevant things... anyway, I never for one moment htought it would involve the Blu-ray edition.... that's minor news compared to what the community is expecting.

Do you remember the "silent auction" for MGM already began? I'm going to take a wild guess right here, right now:

December 15 will be a macro-announcement: WB has ALL the rights, the movie is safe, it is green-lit and here you have your Bilbo AND your Thorin.

What do you gain from this? You do a single announcement of that magnitude, and you literally don't have to announce anything for the next semester or so... fans will be satisfied for a long while.

Humbug.

Why does this announcement have to come on a Tuesday? That's like a movie release on DVD or Blu Ray.

Ha, what did I tell you? [In reply to] Can't Post

I was right about the release delay to 2012 being phony, and now it appears I may be right about the much anticipated Dec. 8th rumor also being made up.

But ok, in the off chance that this is legit, the postponement may be a clue in and of itself. It would certainly rule out a casting announcement. Why? Because according to PJ, they just started auditions today, so why would they have originally planned to unveil a big casting announcement today? So if something is coming on December 15th, it isn't our long awaited Bilbo. Sorry, the logic is against it.

But yeah, I'm still skeptical.

Why do they have to hype everything? [In reply to] Can't Post

Somebody better give WB a peek at the geek manual explaining that you don't mess with our emotions. Say it, do it, or leave it alone till you've got your ducks in a row. Hopefully it'll be news that will ease the fears of the garage sale they've been having and everything's a go or whatever. Right now my geek gauge is stuck on "it figures". Maybe I'll feel more like being toyed with after a good night's sleep.

I've been casting my mind back [In reply to] Can't Post

to the pre-LOTR period, and I don't think we experienced these two-steps-forward-one-step-back public comments then. Of course we also didn't have lawsuits and personal grievances between the parties, and high expectations from an impatient geek-crowd either - news of LOTR being filmed was released only when studio go-ahead and funding was already in place.

I wonder if this pre-Hobbit business is standard in the movie world, but we the eager masses just don't usually see it?

Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..."
Dwarves: "Pretty rings..."
Men: "Pretty rings..."
Sauron: "Mine's better."

"Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded b*****d with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak.

I've never known TORn's PTB to make up stories [In reply to] Can't Post

Except on the 1st of April, of course. They are always very clear to indicate when they're reporting rumor rather than fact. And, quite frankly, TORn doesn't need to report false stories to draw in readers.

Made up? [In reply to] Can't Post

This didn't originate with TORn. If they said they got a call, they got a call. TORN reports what it hears but the reliability of the source varies.

So it's the studio jerking our chain here, not the TORn PTB. Apparently they're getting their hype machine too far in front of their product - which really isn't all that unusual.

I remember many interviews [In reply to] Can't Post

over the years from actors, directors and producers talking about the movie development process, and there is a common theme that delay, frustration and do-overs are common. I don't have a good link to a representative interview, but I'm sure many of us have heard stories about how long a particular screenplay would sit on a shelf, or go in to or out of development. Remember all the frustration that Peter had with King Kong - he was on the verge of making that movie at least once and had to put it aside to to LOTR. King Kong was a movie he had wanted to do his entire adult life. We were only paying attention after the LOTR movies were finished, but he had waited decades to make King Kong.

In my mind, this delay is nothing. The casting will begin, the movies will be green-lit, and we will soon be watching spy reports of the filming!

Each cloak was fastened about the neck with a brooch like a green leaf veined with silver.

`Are these magic cloaks? ' asked Pippin, looking at them with wonder.

`I do not know what you mean by that,' answered the leader of the Elves.

It seems to me [In reply to] Can't Post

especially common in cases of sequels to smash hits. Between studio hopes that the success of the first one will mean an even bigger payday for the second and their attempts to capitalize on name recognition and fan anticipation and the eagerness of the fans themselves, the PR tends to outrun the actual production process. I think sometimes the studio is so very eager to make sure the sequel is also successful that they start micromanaging and retard the process even more...something which I very much hope isn't going to happen in this case.

Most movies also don't have the fan microscope scrutinizing every crumb of information 2 years before release date, so the usual delays and hiccups don't make as big a splash.

Oh dear... [In reply to] Can't Post

another Tuesday? That does sound like a dvd release. But I don't think that would be able to have been kept secret if it were soon. And releases come on Tuesdays but not necessarily the announcement of a release.

I'm still holding out for at least a Bilbo announcement. But it's all good.

I imagine that it is [In reply to] Can't Post

While I have little experience within Hollywood myself, a joke that my father cracked a while back is that half the kids in the schools around here have parents that work in the industry- and it does seem to be true. I've talked with such folks before and delays as well as short deadlines are not at all unheard of. And heck, one only needs to watch the LOTR extras to look at how long and all the playing parties there! :)

And, because of the delay, this must be something much bigger than Blu-ray, which doesn't involve a scurry of contracts between various parties.

I can wait an extra week ;)

Ok, I know it is a very complicated process, but I am now seriously annoyed.... [In reply to] Can't Post

...this waiting game with a bait on the line that is being constantly pulled out of our reach is really frustrating!!!! I mean, I was looking forward to good news in December a year ago and a year on and the game goes on.

Now, as for the casting, it might be starting this week, but Guillermo DID say that they DID have actors in mind for Bilbo and that they narrowed it down to three or four (can't remember now). So it is still very possible that it could be the casting announcement for Bilbo. We are certainly owed a BIG news after all this toying!!! Though I rant, I am sure it has nothing to do with our lovely Peter and Guillermo - but mainly the bureaucracy, as always...

Oh well, what choice have we got but to continue waiting patiently.....

Scrutiny of the fans that made it happen [In reply to] Can't Post

in the first place, imho. If it hadn't been for the years of crying out for this project to be made available for Peter (petitions, letters, screaming from the rooftops), they (studios) wouldn't have this likely-successful prequel even in the works right now! Another pitfall followup films suffer is exaggeration of what the "studios" believe to be the popular points making them trite and losing that edge that made them successful in the first place. Peter has shown he knows how to keep that in check, but I have to admit the HBII suffered from a bit of it.

I think WB and other Hollywood-esque players don't understand that the Tolkien audience doesn't need the hype and games to draw attention to the project and build eagerness and anticipation. In this case, we had to draw their attention to Tolkien... and to us! There's more sophistication and accountability where we're concerned, again... imho. No hype and taunting is necessary. But if they can't help themselves and have to play the game... don't do things like this.

I understand they probably expected everything to be in place for this announcement... whatever it is. I understand they are most likely as frustrated as we are; but still....

[sleep didn't help, apparently ;) ]
