I'll try to keep it short.
Melinda always has the best technique, but she didn't blow me away. Still didn't care for Simon's cheap shot on the first song.
Bleak, er, Blake is 'special' enough to get the cool reverb treatment. *Pauler voice* "You had fun up there, and your hair looks great that color!"
Lakisha was uneven, and made horrible choices. Doesn't take direction well...yet again. I think I heard a little Diana Ross in her voice on the second one, though.
Jordin was in better control this week, but not nearly as great as the 3 Stooges seemed to think. I thought her first run-through with Barry was great, but not what she did on the stage. Randy needs to clean his ears if he thinks that her on-stage To Love Somebody beats Clay's.
She seems to practice well, but go pitchy and shrieky on performance night.
The recaps at the end of the show were certainly unbalanced.
They didn't showcase the best parts of Melinda's performances...
selected the worst of Lakisha's....
showed Blake's best...
and Jordin's best without a shriek in evidence.
*sigh*

It wasn't the performers, it was the source material. I suffered for all of them.

Simon better watch the Clay-bashing. He's my 86yo Mom's favourite and she's a member of his fan club, so he's aces with me.

Melinda seems to be changing what she does to try to be more show-bizzy, but that's not what got her this far. It's the emotion we're looking for. I was not moved.
What really killed me about Paula's comments on Blank (oops, there we go again!) was when she said he was perfectly in tune, after he gave one of the pitchiest performances we've heard in a long time from anyone. (But not even Randy called him on it.)
Why doesn't LaKisha ever pay any attention to what the mentors tell her? Does she really think she knows more about music and performance than they do? Or does she not understand what they're saying? Or is she not capable of doing it?
Interesting: Gibb said she had a choice on the high notes as to whether to go hard (and what did he say? not "shrill", but that was the general idea) or not. I think he was trying to suggest that she didn't need to be so srident. So why doesn't she ever exercise that choice and NOT make those really harsh, painful sounds on high notes?
Oh dear. I'm ready for anyone but Melinda to go home, but I'm predicting LaKisha, because I think Blake has inherited all of the votes that formerly went to Chris. The judges clearly are biased in favor of Jordin.

I just noticed that I forgot to identify Jordin as the subject of my fourth paragraph.
Anyway, tonight's result was no surprise. LaKisha's a better singer than Blake, but a lot of people voting don't really care who's the best singer. What worries me is that Ryan had Jordin sit down first, which I expect means she got the most votes. Hopefully, Melinda will get more of LaKisha's votes than Jordin will.

Yeah, no surprise tonight. Unfortunately, Dial Idol's predictions tend to become more accurate as the season progresses...and they put Blake slightly ahead of Jordin this week, but with each of them scoring about twice as high as Melinda and Lakisha.
I'll join you in hoping that Lakisha's votes go to Melinda next week.

with the "spark" of Jordin and the talent of Melinda I would be emotionally invested, but I find myself really not caring- which stinks, because I love this show. Anyone can go home next week, even Melinda.
Did you see the new show in the works? Best band? Should be interesting.

And I agree with a few of the others who've said that Lakisha apparently doesn't take direction. Oh well, she's off now. And this week I do get to (mostly) un-retract my last week's two opinion-retractions, as I suspected. Blake went back to being pretty bad again, and Jordin went back to being pretty good (although not quite as good as I hoped-- why did she sound better during practice than during performance?). And Melinda's going to win, that's pretty obvious.
But I do heartily agree with you, gramma, about the source material.

I don't watch American Idol, so I was stunned when I searched for this overlooked BeeGees gem on youtube and found that this Blake fellow sang it. Not very well, unfortunately.
