Tolkien at Kalamazoo Can't Post

I'm wondering if anyone is planning to go to the Tolkien conference at Kalamazoo next week: May 10-13. Be warned: this is a scholarly event, but there's also some fun to be had as well during the three and a half days of sessions. The Tolkien panels are a part of a much larger conference, the International Congress on Medieval Studies, that takes place at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo. I'm hoping to arrive May 9th and have to leave on the 12th (hoping is the key word -- I'm having the hardest time finding available flights into Kalamazoo!) Can I persuade anyone else to come -- dinner at Bilbo's restaurant?

next year, for certain! [In reply to] Can't Post

I was going to try this year, but got a new job and so can't take the time off yet, not to mention the cane and etc.

Next year I should be walking on TWO bionic legs, so am going to try to attend (if they have it next year...they have it yearly, right??)

Some say they're going to a place called Glory, and I ain't saying it ain't a fact.
But I've heard that I'm on the road to Purgatory, and I don't like the sound of that!
I believe in love, and live my life accordingly,
And I choose: let the mystery be.

I might be able to make it this year - need to check my schedule and see what I can arrange.

Each cloak was fastened about the neck with a brooch like a green leaf veined with silver.
`Are these magic cloaks?' asked Pippin, looking at them with wonder.
`I do not know what you mean by that,' answered the leader of the Elves.

Have fun there [In reply to] Can't Post

Someday I will be able to go to K'zoo. Worst time of year for me (right after the semester ends is administrative planning retreat time, ugh), but I have heard it is a very interesting conference--all those medievalists in one place--and really want to go for the Tolkien papers and the experience of it all!

That and more amusing "lynes of picke-vppe", largely composed with the Kalamazoo conference in mind, can be found at Geoffrey Chaucer's blog here. Professor Herr von Korncrake's summary of the K'zoo experience is also pretty funny, though it apears that I'm a limpet on a snail's belly. (Hat tip: In the Middle and R.S. Nokes.)

Wish I could go - it all sounds like so much fun! (Even though I probably couldn't comprehend half of the lectures Blush, it'd still be great!)

If you're a limpet [In reply to] Can't Post

then I must be the one who's perpetually by the coffee urn.

Being exactly in the position described in "In the Middle," I took cohen's advice and read Professor von Korncrake's account of the K'zoo experience -- which explains why I've booked a hotel room, for one thing. Thanks for these hilarious diversions! I think I'll post the "lynes of picke-vppe" for my students to practice.

I'm staying in Three Rivers. [In reply to] Can't Post

Booked late, so I'm at a hotel 25 miles south of K'zoo -- everything in town was full. But you can still register for the conference itself onsite (though advance registration closed several weeks ago).

I could stay at several hotels along 94, but according to the web site nearly all the conference sessions are booked up. So even if I could register at the conference, I wouldn't be able to get in to your and Modtheow's sessions.

Definitely want to hear about it though! And I could be persuaded to drive over and meet you for dinner. It's about 2 hours from me.

The sessions aren't booked up. [In reply to] Can't Post

They can't be: attendance at sessions is first come first serve: you don't register to attend those in advance, and nobody checks at the door to see who's coming in. It's quite common for attendees to choose the session they'll attend on the spur of the moment, based on recommendations from colleagues and the like.

Now, pre-registration to attend the conference as a whole closed on Apr. 15 (as did the option for onsite housing), but walk up registration is perfectly possible.
