Birthday mathom Can't Post

After waking up slowly today and watching FOTR (present to myself - one free day to do what I choose), I must confess that today is a rather biggish birthday - I fear I must be one of the Elder "hol-bytla" here.
I turn 60 today (small sigh). My family feted me well last night. I made bookmarks for each member of family and dear friends at the party which told each individual what I loved and admired about them and thanking them for the joy of knowing them. I read each one out before presenting them and we were all crying by the end...but they were good tears. I felt that this birthday would be a good time to make sure what I felt did not go unsaid.

And so...First, from "Songs for the Philologists"

"Good luck to you, good man, and to you, dear woman. I give you lasting joy, have praise and pleasant life. He who worked here so hard, expounded runes and ancient texts, may he be happy too, merry at his feasts..."

The welcome and inspiration and fun I have enjoyed here is amazing. As one of the speakers at the Marquette Conference said (my paraphrase) - It's nice to be in a room where a detailed discussion of things Tolkien is not greeted with rolled eyes, but actually anticipated joyfully.

I am one of the hippies who first read LOTR in the '60s and just never quite got over the impact. As I get older, I see more and more. My enjoyment is so much added to by being able to lurk and/or drop in to see points I may have missed at a first (second, third..fiftieth) reading. Being a Neo-Luddite, being part of this group has forced me to push my computer techniques (small though they are) as well. Being sort of shy (here, my family is gasping in disbelief) I would never have gotten on a plane and flown alone to Marquette. Thanks to some wonderful Tornsibs, I actually did go there and the whole experience was one of the hightlights of my life.

So, well, thank you so much to all of you.

Good luck to all here and may our beloved Professor, too, be merry at his feasts.

Nariel

Happiest of birthdays! [In reply to] Can't Post

Marquette was amazing, wasn't it? I remember several "Oh, wow" moments, but definitely one of them was sitting in one of the lectures, savoring the joy of spending several days with like-minded people, and talking Tolkien the entire time.

Sounds like you had a great day - hope it continues!

Each cloak was fastened about the neck with a brooch like a green leaf veined with silver.
`Are these magic cloaks?' asked Pippin, looking at them with wonder.
`I do not know what you mean by that,' answered the leader of the Elves.

Many Happy Returns of the Day, Nariel! [In reply to] Can't Post

Now that's a good celebration for a birth-day: a day to do what one pleases - those are so rare. Six decades! Isn't it amazing, when we over-half-century folk look back, to see what all has happened in those years? (How did we ever live without the Internet? Laugh)

A Marquette mathom - thank you for sharing the memory, and the verse from the venerable "Songs"!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"And when Sam heard that he laughed aloud for sheer delight, and he stood up and cried: 'O great glory and splendour! And all my wishes have come true!'"
What a great way to celebrate! [In reply to] Can't Post
I love your birthday gift to yourself and you bookmark gifts to people -- you are a class act.
Congrats and enjoy your "new sixties" -- hope they are as much fun as the other ones you lived through!
Another happy birthday wish, Nariel, from another of the elder eldar... [In reply to] Can't Post
I first read LOTR back in the late 60's too. It's appeal is timeless, isn't it?
Many, many happy returns of the day.
