Idle "Idol" Chatter Can't Post

Well, since I didn't get flamed last week, I'll start the thread again. To start off, I'd like to say how impressed and proud I am of the "Idol" people for this whole "Idol Gives Back" campaign. Simon Cowell represents all of us when he grows pale and dizzy with horror while visiting some of the desperately poor people in Africa. The shantytown and garbage dump he walked through were something out of Mordor. The problems seem overwhelming, but any effort to help makes a difference. Save Africa, save the world, or something like that.

That being said, here's my review of the singers:

Chris - Why did the judges think that was good? He was pitchy in the beginning and boring throughout. Maybe I wasn't paying close enough attention.

Melinda - So wonderful. She is so far above everyone else they might as well just stop the competition and give her the record contract.

Blake - Surprisingly good. Maybe there still isn't much emotion, but it seemed sincere, as the judges said, and his performance was less fidgety than usual and the vocals were decent. And I love watching his eyes and his little boy mouth.

Lakisha - Just OK for me. She really seems to have lost her way.

Phil - Sounded good, but not that interesting.

Jordin - I was thinking the same thing as the judges: Wow, she's taking this old chestnut and turning it into something that could be a hit song tomorrow. Very impressive.

I voted for Melinda, Blake and Jordin. Please, please, please let Chris be the one to go. Or Phil.

Where's Frodo?

Completely disagree (well, mostly). [In reply to] Can't Post

Chris - His best performance so far; completely agreed with the judges. I haven't voted before (because I tape the show and usually watch it after voting is over), but I actually voted for Chris tonight, because I enjoyed his performance more than anyone else's, and I'd like to see him stick around.

Melinda - I disliked the song and thought it was her worst performance so far, but I still think she should win the whole thing. What worries me is that she sounded a bit shouty, which I haven't heard before.

Blake - Be honest: would anyone actually buy his cover of "Imagine?" He just doesn't have that good a voice, and he brought nothing interesting to this song. I don't even agree that he seemed "sincere."

LaKisha - Horrible song choice, shouty performance, and her usual choppy phrasing ("re-a.......lize").

Phil - Better than Blank (oops, I mean Blake! Freudian slip on the keyboard!), but just OK -- like the judges, I wanted to hear the sound he used last week.

Jordin - Horrible. I totally fail to understand why anyone likes her vocals. What are the judges smoking? I wanted to fast-forward, but listened anyway, though it was painful. What an awful, harsh tone! I predict nodes on the cords within the year if she keeps this up. What baffles me is why Simon calls LaKisha on shouting but gives Jordin a pass when she does the very same thing. I guess it's her stage presence and youthful appeal, because it sure as heck is not her voice.

Should go: Blake, followed by LaKisha and Jordin.

Will go: Well, I'm afraid it will be Chris or Phil.

Well, that was UNinspiring. [In reply to] Can't Post

Chris -- Mostly on-key, and not bad...once you get used to the sudden nasal gusts he claims are stylistic.
He does make an effort to update whatever he sings, and do it his own Justin Timberfake way, so points for that.

Melinda -- It had to happen.
I didn't like the song choice, the arrangement, the backups, or all that vibrato in her voice. Almost shouty in spots.
My least favorite Melinda performance, but I still think she's the best they've got, and she also gets points for making it different.

Blake -- I'm sorry, he just sounds so lounge-y when he's not beat-boxing.
His face looked a little more expressive this time, but the vocal was bland.

LaKisha -- *Ugh.* It had some moments, but our living room poll said "Harsh!" all the way through.
She's a vocal powerhouse, but it was powerfully ugly. Throaty, croaky, shouty, whatever.
I'm no Fantasia fan, but I've seen her perform this several times with more modulation.

Phil -- Nice, but sounded more R&B (?) than Country.

Jordin -- Oookayyy, I definitely heard some of the harsher high notes Aerin's been complaining about, but I like the over-all tone of Jord's voice...when she's 'on'. I just wish she'd be more consistent. And get a vocal coach. She's still selling it as a performance (plus she's young and photogenic), so she's the apparent Chosen One no matter what.

Thoughts and Rants #2... Ryan Seacrest should be voted off! [In reply to] Can't Post

Okay. Second time I'm entering the AI discussion. And yes, I was only kidding about Seacrest. (Maybe. Unimpressed)

First, the performances. Last night I didn't get to watch them, so I unfortunately can't comment on them; but I can and will comment about the past several weeks' performances that I hadn't commented on before...

1: I'm wondering how on earth Blake has stayed in (and why on earth the judges like him). He's just not a great singer. At all.

2: Lakisha apparently has only one or two genres she's great at; otherwise, it's just okay.

3: Phil also appears to have only one genre-- country.

4: And, of course, the top two participants (who I think should be the final two, out of the people that are left) are Melinda and Jordin. Melinda, because it's totally obvious she's the best singer; Jordin, because she does have an amazing voice when she wants to, and last week she definitely wanted to.

Alright, backdated comments said... now on to this fundraising special. I'm glad they did fundraise; that's not what I'm going to comment on. What I'm going to comment on is the very annoying ending.

Earlier in the program, Seacrest said that the results would be "the most controvercial in American Idol history". And I'm sure just about everyone thought that meant the voters lost their minds and somehow got rid of M. or J. (I, and my family, sure thought that, and weren't too happy about that possibility). So, of course, we watched the end... when he said that Chris was safe, totally making Jordin and her family (and the disappointed audience) believe that she was going; and then said "you are ALSO safe". At this, we (and everyone else) were relieved, of course, but we were also definitely annoyed.

I mean, of course Seacrest has always apparently enjoyed drawing things out and making the audience and participants think stuff was going to happen that then turned out to be the opposite, but this was another level. Yeah, Ryan, it was the most controvercial, because toughening them up is one thing... but what you did was just mean. Ugh.

Oh well. At least the voters apparently (or, rather, hopefully) made the right decisions. We'll find out next week, I guess.

It was no surprise to me... [In reply to] Can't Post

or some others posting online. The two week total/double elimination game has been played before, and was guessed/expected this time. It wouldn't look good to boot somebody for bringing in the least amount of money for charity.
*ahem* I will keep my personal feelings for Ryan "family board" by not commenting. ;)

Dial Idol was accurate last week, so this week scares me...

Results show turnabout..... [In reply to] Can't Post

I'll say it: I thought Jordin was terrible tonight in the group singing. The worst.

And I'm glad Kelly came back as Kelly, not Yelly Clarkson...and that she cut way back on her OTT melisma.
Thank you, Carrie Underwood, for not butchering a great song as so many have before on AI.
I *heart* Josh Groban. He's my Pippin on ent draught. =)

What a cheat! [In reply to] Can't Post

Well, at least I taped the results show and fast-forwarded through a lot of it. What Ryan actually said was that it was the most "shocking" results show ever. I can't tell you how terribly disappointed I was to find out that Jordin had not been eliminated!

I did listen to a few of the musical numbers. I'd never actually heard Kelly Clarkson before; I listened because of Jeff Beck, but I thought she gave a really fine performance.

The Simpson's parody was great! I also really liked the Jack Black skit.

Overall, a very well executed fundraiser. But I'm really annoyed that no one was sent home.

On Melinda [In reply to] Can't Post

She took one of my favorite songs by Faith Hill and sang it well technically, but with no heart. Have you ever heard Faith Hill sing that song? Melinda shouldn't have touched it.

Uhhhh... [In reply to] Can't Post

my opinion is that Faith Hill doesn't sing it as well 'live' as she does in the recording studio...but...she always sings it with feeling.
I didn't care much for Melinda's version. Not a wise choice, IMO.

Erm... the reason... [In reply to] Can't Post

... she was the worst in the group singing is because she was upset. With all that emotion, of course it was tough to sing properly.

*sigh*... I'm still half-serious about the thought that Ryan Seacrest should be voted off (the meanie). TongueWink

Sorry, but...no. [In reply to] Can't Post

I thought she was terrible in the first group song, and that was long before Ryan played head games.
And given what the contestants said elsewhere after the show...they weren't so sure that anyone would actually be going home either....... Melinda didn't believe it.

LOL [In reply to] Can't Post

Out of the darkness of my life, so much frustrated, I put before you the one great thing to love on earth: the Blessed Sacrament... There you will find romance, glory, honour, fidelity, and the true way of all your loves on earth, and more than that: Death: by the divine paradox, that which ends life, and demands the surrender of all, and yet by the taste (or foretaste) of which alone can what you seek in your earthly relationships (love, faithfulness, joy) be maintained, or take on that complexion of reality, of eternal endurance, which every man's heart desires.
