As you know, there are lots of different media for art - pencil and ink, oils, sculpture, computer art, mixed media, and so on. There is also collaborative art where multiple people contribute to a single work. Take your favorite screen-captures from the LOTR movies – can that be considered art? Over in the Reading Room, in case you don't know, discussions have been gong on about the works of different artist and people have discussed different criteria such as subject matter, composition, color, light and shadow, angle of view, and so on applied to different paintings. If you apply these kinds of artistic criteria to your favorite screen-captures how do they hold up?

I haven commented from time to time on how the LOTR screencap library set up by Reera the Red is kind of our art gallery. Many of the shots to me seem like paintings. I don't have time to link any now, but Frodo being carried by the eagles, some of the Moria shots (particularly Frodo trying to waken Aragorn after the cave troll knocks him out), and certainly the images of the Gondorians watching Faramir's funeral ride out come to mind. I don't know if a screencap image qualifies as art, but certainly they are artistically envisioned.

Egad, Ohio Hobbit, do you not know of our incredible LOTR Image Library compiled by Reera the Red that we have mined over and over again for discussions around here? Sorry if we've been keeping it a secret! Perhaps you didn't just recognize the way I refered to it....either way, here's the link: http://www.framecaplib.com/lotrlib.htm If you haven't been there before, it's quite a treat. And many, many of the images captured really do look like artwork (to me at least!)

I bet you might not know about this gem either -- Aragorn Elessar's site where he has posted transcriptions of the Director and Writers Commentaries. Here's the link: http://aragorn-elessar1.tripod.com/ Another oft-used resource around here, particularly when we were doing the Annotated Discussion series. If you haven't gone there yet, it's another great labor of love and gift to this community!

because Alan Lee and John Howe were there in the team, as well as those less known artists who also contributed sketches, great matte paintings etc: there is in the whole atmosphere of those movies an amazing sense of Beauty, and many shots that strike you as being Art just as much as a painting can be. Even in my own language I am not sure I could find the right words to give the kind of artistic analysis you are talking about, so in English I don't think I will even try - but definitely yes, it is Art!...

I agree with you 100 percent. I think that it is art, but I don’t think that I could find the right words to give any kind of artistic analysis either. I wish that I could. I have been watching the art discussions over in RR with wide-eyed wonder. It is amazing to think of all of the components that could go into a single image. There is the work that went into designing and building the sets. There are the models, built to exquisite detail, and maybe sculptures. There could be a beautiful matte painting added to the background. Computer graphics might be added to this mix in the form of paintings, such as extending a set, or as computer animation like the water falls in Rivendell or CGI characters. Add to this props, costumes, prosthetics, and makeup. Into this mix, blend in cinematography, lighting and digital grading. Any one of these things is an art form in its self. I would venture to say that one could find a scene that has most, or all, of these components. Finally, top it off with the vision of the person who put it all together, saying “this is how I want it to look” or taking other people’s visions and saying “that’s OK, go with it”. All of that just to create an image. Of course, the image created is a “moving” one. But, if animation cells are works of art, why not a single frame of a “live” movie? I have been trying to think, if I could have only one screen capture from the movies which one it would be. So far, I haven’t been able to decide.

for the screen cap I'd choose if I could only have just one.
...and the sails were drawn up, and the wind blew, and slowly the ship slipped away down the long grey firth; and the light of the glass of Galadriel that Frodo bore glimmered and was lost.

I wish that some of the art people from the Reading Room would come over and analyze this screen capture. I think this weekend, I am going to have to sit down and learn how to post links and pictures.

But I too was hesitating between quite a few great ones among those 'paintings', so I'll just pick another one... Although I am like Ohiohobbit: no idea yet how to post pictures etc... Thank you then for posting already one that could have represented the choice of both of us!
