What 'Locations' in YOUR Country would suit the Hobbit Movie??

Just a general thought. I know of various locations in my own Country- 'Ireland' that would make wonderful locations in the Hobbit movie. What locations though in your own country, whether it be America, England, Canada etc would make great locations for the Hobbit movie?
I know Middle Earth is effectively based on Europe, which the likes of Ireland and England would suit, it would be interesting to see what people would deem fit that exists in their own locale.
Who knows? maybe we could influence the great Del Toro to consider similar areas to the ones picked here with those in N.Z.... if they exist.
I'll start it off.

There are a couple of places here I can think of:
The Misty Mountains (Real Location: The Rocky Mountains, CO) Beautiful mountain range that takes up half of my former native state...gosh I miss those peaks...
The Lonely Mountain (Real Location: Mount Monadnock, NH) Ok, so it's not a REALLY big mountain but it's the only "mountain" surrounded by a hill-y area (which, btw, reminds me a lot of Emyn Arnen  ). This is the mountain I climed a few weeks ago with 'Boo' that is about an hour away from where we live. It's named the most climbed mountain in the world, Cool, eh?
Goblin Caves (Real Location: Cave of the Winds, CO) Well, they probably wouldn't actually be able to film in there but to me it would make a great location. I've been there a few times and it's a really beautiful mazed of caverns and caves. This photo doesn't really do it justice, you really would have to visit there youself! Chick it out on the web for more info.
That's about all I can think of for now. Maybe I'll think of more later. This was a great idea you had!

Anyway, if Oscarilbo or even Guillermo himself come by, they won't let me lite when I tell you there are few locations in Mexico that would perfectly suit Middle-earth. It's an entirely different latitude and with the height above see level in which most of the country stands, we simply don't have much that resembles England, Ireland or New Zealand. However, I may show some pics of places that could very well be used for Middle-earth with some post-production.

Or how about the Orizaba Peak for Lonely Mountain? This is the tallest mountain in North America. It's one of the many volcanoes in Mexico. The Aztecs called it Citlaltepetl, The Mountain of the Star. It is in Veracruz, a state that faces the Gulf of Mexico.

Or perhaps Peña de Bernal for The Carrock? Peña de Bernal is the largest monolithic rock in the world. Actually, the name would be gramatically wrong, since in Spanish both "peña" and "bernal" stand for that kind of monolithic rock. This one is also in central Mexico.

To whit:
The specific guidelines for posting pictures within the message body of your post are as follows: the maximum size of any picture posted should be 525 wide x 400 pixels high (or a better measure is: 210,000 pixels squared - width x height), but no wider than 670 pixels. The maximum file size per picture should be 50k. The cumulative file size of all pictures in one post should not exceed 250k (5 pictures of the maximum filesize of 50k, 10 pictures of a filesize of 25k, etc.). I didn't know you were Argentinian! I thought we weren't represented in South America. I'm glad I was wrong. How much of the Andes are actually in Argentina? Do they constitute a good part of the border with Chile? I only remember political maps, not terrain ones.

Growing up in Utah, I thought I knew mountains. Then I lived in Peru for awhile, including 5 months in Cusco, and that really changed my opinion. I visited the Sacred Valley a few times. On the road in there, the mountains look twice as tall as the ones in Utah (and probably are-- The city of Cusco itself is as high up as some of Utah's highest mountains) and the canyons twice as deep. The scale is immense.
Unfortunately, now I'm stuck in west Texas, where it's flat as a pancake. I don't recall Bilbo going through miles of cotton fields to get to the Lonely Mountain, so I think it rules out my current location for "The Hobbit".

What a great topic! There’s actually tons of locations in my County that would work for The Hobbit movie. Let’s start at the beginning:
The bikeway tunnel under Route 134 in Kitchawan. So obviously right for Bag End that it practically seals the whole deal right from the get-go!
 
For the rest of the Shire they’d have to use two locations, but they’re only about 10 miles apart – nothing for a major film! The Muscoot Farm museum (left) has pigs and everything already, they wouldn’t have to ship them in. And the Sleepy Hollow Restoration – well is that a water mill or what? And it works, too!
 Lyndhurst Castle in Tarrytown would be perfect for Rivendell!
 The Hudson Highlands are always misty, especially in the late fall. Imagine Bilbo and the Dwarves struggling through these Misty Mountains passes!
 Although the entire county is heavily wooded, your best bet for Mirkwood is probably the Mianus River Preserve which is virgin wilderness, I believe. I even found some dwarf stand-ins to help you see how perfect the trails there would be.
And the Forest River location comes with it:
Don’t forget the Elven Halls! The bikeway comes to the rescue again – this is the underpass for I-87 in Elmsford:
Now we get to the good parts. Long Lake is obviously the Tappan Zee. Even though it’s salt water, trust me the audience will not know. And the bridge can be “matted out”, I’m almost certain.
Laketown again requires a company move, just a few miles across the county to City Island (technically in the Bronx).
Remember the ruined piers of the earlier town? Already done – money saved!
Finally, the big one: The Lonely Mountain. 831-foot high Turkey Mountain in Yorktown is the highest peak in Westchester and works amazingly well as Erebor if you keep the power lines out of the shots. Doesn’t the sunset here make you think of the Fire of the Dragon?
Well, as you can see, they could probably make the whole movie just in Westchester County, and save a ton of money that could be used for a third, fourth and fifth prequel movie like we all want!

How much of the Andes are actually in Argentina? Do they constitute a good part of the border with Chile? I only remember political maps, not terrain ones. The long western border of Argentina runs along the Andes and effectively cuts down through the mountain chain itself to seperate Chile and Argentina. Was in both countries over the holidays and the mountain range (especially the fiords at the southern tip along with Cape Horn) are spectacular. I'm a Chicago boy so I'm it's not like getting the answer from a native - but I'm also looking at a world map on my wall as well!

Most, if not all of our borders with Chile (almost 3500 kilometers, there are a few kms of sea borders between Santa Cruz and Tierra del Fuego with Chile) are constituted by the Andes. Half the Andes are in Chile, the other half in Argentina. It's highest mountain, the Aconcagua, is in Argentina.
The Andes (both sides of it, the argentinian side and the chilean side) are quite similar to the Misty Mountains, specially in Patagonia, where the mountains are more misty.
I live in Buenos Aires, so unfortunately I'm a bit far from any location resembling Middle Earth (except for the Pampas, quite similar to the flat regions of The Shire, and with excellent grass for the horses of Rohan), though luckly I've travelled a lot and I know 90% of my country.
In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit...

Notice the amazing similarity:
As for the Tappan Zee becoming Long Lake: having had frequent experience with the I-287 bridge across that widening of the Hudson River, I would find it rather amusing to keep the bridge intact at the beginning, and have it be the one destroyed by the Men of the New York Highway Department Lake-town! I mean, with it undergoing what seems like constant repair, it's already partly-destroyed, anyway...

You know what CuChulainn, I've been visiting Donegal every year since I was born, sometimes twice or three times a year, and I've never been to Errigal. I think I'll make a point of it this year. And you're right, its a perfect Erebor. Thanks for pointing it out.

These lovely pastoral scenes are common in Amish and Mennonite communities in central and northwestern Pennsylvania. They always make me think of the Shire!
With caffeine, all things are possible.

Pittsburgh's US Steel skyscraper would be a dandy location for Orthanc. Perhaps the White Council could meet there!
And PPG Place would be a cool stand-in for Minas Tirith (or possibly the Elvish tower on the border of the Shire). I'm sure GDT could work this in somehow.

I can't link directly to an image, but below is a link to a story with a picture of a most curious local building.
It is a very imposing private tower/mansion built by a local eccentric millionaire who lost everything and ended up in either the a mental hospital or prison (i can't remember which) .
Supposedly the initial inspiration for this odd duck came from Tolkien..I don't know which Tolkien Tower it was supposed to be , Orthanc? Baraddur?...it is quite impressive and visible for miles. It is locate on high ground in a bend of the Conodiquinet Creek and at the foot of Blue Mountain Ridge in the 'Great Valley' area of Pennsylvania. The surrounding scenery is really quite beautiful (the article's photo doesn't do it justice)....but it is also ridculously close to the I-81 which sort spoils the sense of 'make believe'. The guy who did this had a screw loose, and i think the local municipality has put regs in place to prevent the tower from ever being completed and occupied...in fact, i think any purchaser of the property must agree to demolish trhe tower which is one reason the property has been in limbo for 20 years.

The beautiful farms, horse-drawn buggies and plows, harvesting without machinery, the love of color (and I've seen some mighty bright shirts worn with those sober black trousers and suspender), the often bare feet, love of pipeweed and good simple food, shorter stature...
I'm very fond of the Kishacoquillas Valley
but other areas of Central/South-central Pennsylvania, even the non-Amish and Mennonite farms, look very much like the Shire.
We can even throw in the famous Round Barn near Gettysburg [snagged from somebody's flicker album---don't feel like looking for mine to scan]
since hobbits like things round. =)
