something great just happened to me!

Along with thousands (or millions?) of other folk, I ordered COH (and a new book about Tolkien and Lewis) from Amazon and eagerly awaited its arrival. I checked the order status on Saturday afternoon around 4pm, and imagine my surprise to see it noted as "delivered at 3pm" at both the Amazon and the USPS "order tracking" sites!! Uh...I was home at 3pm, with the garage door up and my husband even making a lot of noise in there! No way! I checked my front porch, my garden (maybe it fell) my mailbox (again) and with my neighbors. NO BOOK!! I emailed Amazon and they right away said they would deliver it again ASAP. I reported it to the US Post Office (not to offend anyone here who works for the USPS but it is hard to get through to an actual person at your local post office to lodge a complaint!!). Today a lady called me back and said "your mailman says he left it on your porch". Um...yes, I KNOW he says that, but it's not there! "Well, we will re-deliver it..if we can find it" she says. Wow, customer service is not dead!! Anyway, that's not the good thing that happened. The good thing is this: I was just sitting here reading some email and some Torn posts and the doorbell rang, and a nice young man said, "Miss Wilt?" (this is the South, we are all "Miss" until we die!!), "I think this is your package. I am really sorry I opened the box, I thought it was something I had ordered from Amazon myself but when I saw the title I knew it wasn't something I had ordered." He had a Mapquest page on top of the box, so I know he not only went to the trouble to get me my order but he had to go out of his way to find me!! Just the box was open, not the shrink wrap around the package! Now, this is the nicest thing in a long time that has just happened to me our of the blue. People really are nice at heart, they really are. Just thought I'd share. Maybe you have a nice unexpected event to share, too? a.s.
"an seileachan" Some say they're going to a place called Glory, and I ain't saying it ain't a fact. But I've heard that I'm on the road to Purgatory, and I don't like the sound of that! I believe in love, and live my life accordingly, And I choose: let the mystery be. ~~~~Iris DeMent

I have a "lost" item story too, although it doesn't involve the post office. I got out of the shower one morning to find a message on my answering machine--from my auto mechanic. He and I communicated regularly in those days because the car I owned was rather troublesome, but that generally involved me calling him, so I returned his call with quite a bit of curiosity. Why would he call me? As it turned out, he had been sitting in his usual coffee shop that morning when one of the other coffee shop "regulars" mentioned that she had found a bank card laying on the ground near the gas pumps at a local convenience store. (I think she said she actually saw me drop it right before I drove away.) She mentioned the name on the card-mine- and Rick, the mechanic, said, "I know her!". He went back to his shop, called me and left the message. I returned his call, checked my wallet to discover that my bank card was indeed missing; the obvious solution to the mystery was that I had dropped it when I filled up my car the night before. I made a quick detour by Rick's shop on the way to work, and my lost debit card found me before I even knew that it was missing. I have been told by acquaintances that I am much too trusting, but the truth is that I have encountered far more honest people in my life than otherwise. Every now and then someone takes advantage of me in some small way, but those incidents are far outweighed by things like the bank card incident, when the honesty and kindness of others has kept me from having to pay the price of my own carelessness.
I wish you could have been there When she opened up the door And looked me in the face Like she never did before I felt about as welcome As a Wal-Mart Superstore--John Prine

When I was a teenager my parents sent me off to do the grocery shopping for the family with a wallet full of cash. One day I somehow left the wallet sitting on top of a pile of apples in the produce section. Someone came running after me with the wallet--with the $200 inside intact. Whew!

I'm glad your book found you through the medium of a very thoughtful person. Thanks for the reminder of how much it can mean to someone to do something kind.

UPS delivered a box, and I opened it without looking at the address label. The contents were not anything I had ordered; at first, I thought my order had been screwed up, but then I saw someone else's name on the packing slip. I called UPS to see if they would pick up the package and deliver it to the correct party. They asked if I had opened the box, and I said I had. They said that since I had opened the box, they could not take responsibility for it, because I might have taken something out. (Charming!) I pointed out that there was a packing slip from which they could determine that nothing was missing, but that wasn't good enough for them. As far as they were concerned, the matter was no longer of any concern to UPS. (They suggested that I should send the box back to the merchant at my own expense!) So I found the addressee in the phone book, called, and asked if he would like to come and pick up his stuff, which he was happy to do. Perhaps I could have gone the extra mile and delivered it, but I was still irked at UPS!

Yes, there are many sweet, generous people in this world. (I wonder how the mailman placed the book on the wrong porch, in the first place? But strange things happen...) We had an "angel" help our family recently. When my eldest and her boyfriend came home from Scotland for a visit a couple of weeks ago, they took her usual route: plane to Boston, subway to train station, train to here. But the subway token system has changed there. They didn't have much time to get to the train from the airport, and as they were standing there trying to figure out how to purchase only the fares they needed instead of a more expensive pass for several trips, a man hearing the boyfriend's soft brogue came up to them, and said to let him help - and he swiped his card twice, allowing them both to get through the turnstile, and make their connection in good time. They were so grateful for this kindness shown to "foreigners"!

First of all, it's lovely to hear about something nice happening and I appreciate you starting this thread. I hope you enjoy both books! We moved to our home about 3 1/2 years ago at the end of November. It's a crazy time of year anyway, and I had a five yr old who had just started kindergarten, a little who was going to be three in a couple of months and a two month old. I was taking my middle daughter to preschool for the last day before Christmas vacation and had apparently left her teacher's gift on the top of the car without realizing it. Well, when we got to school my daughter was in tears and I realized what had happened. I drove home hoping that the gifts had fallen off in the driveway and weren't crushed. No such luck. There wasn't a trace anywhere. I was just about to bundle up the baby and go find another gift, when the phone rang. It was a woman I didn't know and she said that she had seen some wrapped packages on our main neighborhood road and stopped to pick them up. She thought they were probably for a teacher because, thankfully, I had put both my daughter's first and last name on the card. Since the traffic on our road is generally limited to people who live there or are visiting, she took a chance and looked us up. I couldn't believe it! I was absolutely thrilled. We had a lovely conversation and, although she is quite a bit older than me, had quite a lot in common. I drove over with some homemade cookies and gratefully picked up the gifts. I learned that her husband was very ill and asked if she would like a prayer shawl from my church for him, even though we are of different faiths. She accepted and later told me that she and her husband both believe that the shawl they received helped to heal him and that he still uses it. Thanks for bringing that story to mind, a.s. It made me smile to think of it! P.S. Sorry for the big, run-on paragraph! Just hasty today.

Well, it wasn't just now, and it wasn't a complete surprise, but it was still a thrill. Ugly Troll ordered CoH for me from Amazon as an anniversary present which is kind of perfect because we met through Tolkien’s writings. We received a different, big box a few days before while UT was out walking the dog. I waited till he got back to open it. He said, “Is it from Amazon? I’m glad you didn’t open it.” It turns out it was something else completely unrelated that someone sent us. The funny thing was I had intended to give CoH to UT as my present to him, but when he said that about Amazon and that I shouldn’t open packages I had a feeling he was going to get CoH for me. So I ended up getting him something else. Then on Friday a package came from Amazon that looked an awful lot like it could be a book, and there it was, The Children of Húrin. :o)
