Which of the *six* books comprising LotR is your favorite?

I've included the titles Tolkien proposed for them.
I'll go with Book 6 (The End of the Third Age or The Return of the King), because I think the surprisingly-melancholy or bittersweet denouement balances the glorious eucatastrophe, and gives the story relevance in the Primary World.

for me is my favorite, as Moria and Lorien are my 2 favorite parts throughout the trilogy; though Book 6 is very close behind.

I tend to like the beginnings of series books, more than the ends of them. I like the set up, the introduction of characters, the mystery of what is happing, more than the conclusion.

Because "The Two Towers" is my favorite volume, and I like the west-side-of-the-river story best. (Sorry Frodo!)
But my second choice would be "the one with Faramir in it." Squee!

I like people killing people.
Oh, well, seriously-
I love Eowyn sneaking out to war and kicking some major can.
I love the Houses of Healing to pieces- Ioreth is a great character. And, well, Aragorn and Faramir meet
I love Dunedain, and the Grey Company in Book 5 is all we really see of the Northern ones.
Gandalf and the Witch-king... that is not PJ's interpretation...
I love the ending- I was so worried about Pippin the first time I read it.
Heck, my three favorite minor characters- Beregond, Ioreth, and Halbarad- are all introduced in this section.
I do have some other favorite sections scattered throughout the book (Ch 10-12 in book 1, ending of book 4, Scouring of the Shire..), but yea, Book 5 takes the award.

Maybe it's because it's more about dealing with the interactions of different people, the introduction of some of my favorite characters, or that I personally just found it more interesting.

All the story has been building toward this. The individual storylines come together again, and the grand design is revealed. It has the deepest depths and the highest heights, and an ending that makes me weep in its tragedy and its fitness. Whenever I read just a portion of LOTR, it is always from book six.

Each section has its own mood and I enjoy them all. FOTR is the start of the adventure. There's still a certain amount of freshness in our and the character's commitment. And they have each other as companions to lighten the load and boost their mood.
In ROTK, things get at their worst and we are frantic to keep pushing ahead but the end is in site and we (and they) know that it - one way or another, this will be over soon.
And then it all winds down and we try to deal with the Many Partings that are coming.
But in Book 3, the freshness is gone and reality has truly set in as to what this journey is about. And the end is not yet in site. People are having to rely on true strength of will and fortitude to keep going. I am struck by how the characters do that. I love how they maintain their sense of humor - dark as it might be. The flashes of their humor here delight me more than at any other point in the book.
It's interesting that when I was rereading the story in 2002 (after such a long absence it was virtually new to me) and was totally caught up in it... Frodo's fading in Book 6 just devestated me. I mean seriously devestated me. But in fact, the passages with him and Sam and Gollum are not my favorite passages. Odd.

I think that has the purest Faerie. Indeed, that seems to be how Tolkien structured the story, from the height of Faerie in Book One dwindling to its demise in Book Six. By the end of Book Six we're in the world of Men.

In Book Two we encounter a Faerie that is in decline.
There is not that sense of decline in Book One.
It is in Book Two that we get the first hints that Frodo's quest to preserve Faerie may be doomed to failure.

..it´s a hard decision because I love all of the books...well...I chose book 6 because I love the story of Sam and Frodo! The ring is going to be destroyed and the whole fellowship meets again...but I don´t like that the shire is in the end destroyed too-this is such a sad thing!!
so in my opinion the last book is the winner

I love Book 1 the best for the first meetings of characters. There is still a feeling of hope in Middle Earth as the journey begins. So many things are about to happen and adventures are coming. I just love the beginnings!
