**SCOD, April 20, 2009 -- but wow, it's crowded in here today...** Can't Post

I was worried about getting this up late, but I see that there's been plenty to talk about.

Wow, this feels like old times around here. Whoo-hoo!

I'm swamped with work, so I will just quickly post three screencaps (don't ever take me to a buffet, I will starve before I decide what to eat.)

1. Riders Riding Out...

2. Gandalf Riding to Minas Tirith...

3. Rosie!

Questions:

1. These are the first images of Minas Morgul and Minas Tirith -- comments on these images? Lighting, scale, composition, etc.?

2. In the books, Minas Morgul and Minas Tirith are "twin" cities, one dark, one light. The films don't go into that kind of comparsion, in terms of the dialogue, anyway. But what about visually? Are they meant to be mirror images?

3. Neither location is named, of course -- book readers, did you recognize them? Movie firsters, did you have any sense these places would be important later or were they just generic settings?

4. Book readers, is this how you pictured Rosie (not her occupation so much, as her look....)? Me, I like her smile and wholesome look...Movie firsters, this is your second shot of her, did you figure out by now she'd be important later in the story -- or did you forget all about her until Sam brings her up at Mt. Doom?

5. Does Rosie make a convincing bar maid?

Any other comments or thoughts, post away!

1. These are the first images of Minas Morgul and Minas Tirith -- comments on these images? Lighting, scale, composition, etc.?
I loved the look and atmosphere of both places - and the music helped bring me into these environments as well.

Minas Mogul was a bit 'greener' than I expected, but it reminded me of it being rancid or old or mouldy and festering and decaying ... maybe all of those things. Where as the White City is white (with a hint of greyness about it) ... I thought that suited it too.

2. In the books, Minas Morgul and Minas Tirith are "twin" cities, one dark, one light. The films don't go into that kind of comparsion, in terms of the dialogue, anyway. But what about visually? Are they meant to be mirror images?
I think they are, but in contrast to each other - like good King, bad King.

Doom?

Im not sure how I imaged Rosie - as that image was replaced with this Rosie we see in the film, and to me she looks fitting.

5. Does Rosie make a convincing bar maid?

She does! and she makes a very convincing partner for Sam as well.
One thing that made me notice Rosie was something I never had imagined about her - it was her deep voice "Good night lads" she says as the Hobbits leave the pub, and I thought, wow! Dont mess with that smiling barmaid Smile

Funny though, even though we see Rosie a bit in the span of the films - she has no lines (as such), and yet we know her - and I think that says a lot for the casting of her in the film - she's perfect for the role.

Cheers weaver, and thanks for posting under pressure Cool

Sort of unrelated to your question about Rosie, but… [In reply to] Can't Post

The warmth and calm she exudes in this shot is so charming. I remember when the moviemakers announced who they cast in this role. She was a relative unknown so someone searched for an image and posted it here. Everyone was like, “Go, Sam!” (The actress was reportedly actually a singer. Has anyone heard anything about her career in that field, after the movies?)

She’s not how I pictured book Rosie. I imagined her as short and, well, round, with black hair pulled back severely. She’s also kind of strident and bossy in the books. I think I like the movie Rosie better for Sam.

Broken record.... [In reply to] Can't Post

LOVE THESE! Is the whole dang movie one fabulous screencap after another? !

Well, yeeeessss!

These are terrific, Weaver. Hope you had a great weekend.

Just one comment. I really feel that Sarah McLeod was perfect as Rosie! She is the demur, wise, and patient beauty who lovingly waits through 11 hours of movie for her Sam, and then, in her warm, knowing way, gives Sam and us great comfort and hope as we say good-bye at the very end.

Cheers!

Nice buffet selection! [In reply to] Can't Post

1. These are the first images of Minas Morgul and Minas Tirith -- comments on these images? Lighting, scale, composition, etc.?

We see both these shots with riders in them - the Black Riders pounding out of Minas Morgul, and Gandalf galloping up to Minas Tirith. I like the movement in both. It never occurred to me that that was Minas Morgul when I saw this shot in FotR - only with hindsight did I realize what it was. But it sure looks spooky with all that green light! As for Minas Tirith, that delicate pink glow from the sunrise is absolutely beautiful. Minas Tirith looks so warm and inviting in these early shots - so different from its cold austerity in RotK.

2. In the books, Minas Morgul and Minas Tirith are "twin" cities, one dark, one light. The films don't go into that kind of comparsion, in terms of the dialogue, anyway. But what about visually? Are they meant to be mirror images?

I think maybe they are - the contrast between the livid green of MM and the delicate pink of this first shot of MT is certainly striking. And didn't the art guys say that they designed MM to look like MT gone wrong - the same kind of elegant architecture, but pierced with rusty, ugly orc-work?

3. Neither location is named, of course -- book readers, did you recognize them? Movie firsters, did you have any sense these places would be important later or were they just generic settings?

I definitely didn't recognize Minas Morgul. I think Minas Tirith is pretty clear, though, if you remember the description from the book.

Doom?

I didn't imagine her like this - I imagined a no-nonsense farmer's daughter. But I think movie Rosie is just perfect for movie Sam. She's so wise and understanding - thank goodness, because it really takes him a long time to figure things out! (I guess movie-firsters wouldn't get to see this scene at all, at least until they got hooked enough to get the EE - but they would see that quick shot of her saying goodbye to the customers).

5. Does Rosie make a convincing bar maid?

Well, I kind of think of her as more than a barmaid - she seems to be in charge of the bar, and sees the customers out at closing time. I think she's the publican's daughter, which would be a fairly prestigious position in a village (like Ryan's Daughter, for example). Maybe that's why Sam's a bit too shy to ask her out at first...

Farewell, friends! I hear the call.
The ship’s beside the stony wall.
Foam is white and waves are grey;
beyond the sunset leads my way.

Great shots! [In reply to] Can't Post

This is a great collection of shots, weaver! Thank you for finding the time! Heart

1. These are the first images of Minas Morgul and Minas Tirith -- comments on these images? Lighting, scale, composition, etc.?

It shows their nature, doesn't it? The ray of light on Minas Tirith and the darkness surrounding Minas Morgul. It also tells the story of ME at the moment - all is dark, only on Minas Tirith the sun still shines - the last hope of men.

2. In the books, Minas Morgul and Minas Tirith are "twin" cities, one dark, one light. The films don't go into that kind of comparsion, in terms of the dialogue, anyway. But what about visually? Are they meant to be mirror images?

Yes, I think they were meant to be mirror images and they are. Again - the light on MT and the darkness around MM.

3. Neither location is named, of course -- book readers, did you recognize them? Movie firsters, did you have any sense these places would be important later or were they just generic settings?

I did recognize them - MM was clear after the Nine rode out of it and MT was even clearer.

Doom?

Yes, for me Rosie was among the best casted actors. She is so hobbity, if you know what I mean - curly, curvy, cheerful little woman! Smile

5. Does Rosie make a convincing bar maid?

For sure. I'm convinced she could make anyone drink more than they originally intended but she also can deal easily with anyone who has drank more than he/she should! Iron hand in a velvet glove that is! Wink

great pictures [In reply to] Can't Post

I was a movie firster. The whole thing was very believable...so as far as lighting, scale and composion goes...I was completely taken in. Though looking at Minas Morgul...I am very curious as to what it looks like inside...the greenish light is all you can see streaming through the doorway...so what was it like inside..if I could walk through that door...what would I see?

2. In the books, Minas Morgul and Minas Tirith are "twin" cities, one dark, one light. The films don't go into that kind of comparsion, in terms of the dialogue, anyway. But what about visually? Are they meant to be mirror images?

I never really made the comparison when watching the film...though after reading the books it does fit that they are opposites, but it never occured to me when watching the films the first time around.

3. Neither location is named, of course -- book readers, did you recognize them? Movie firsters, did you have any sense these places would be important later or were they just generic settings?

LOL....I didn't sense anything first time round...being a movie firster I was completely awestruck and hadn't a clue what would happen next...I was on the edge of my seat the whole time!

4. Book readers, is this how you pictured Rosie (not her occupation so much, as her look....)? I vaguely remembered Rosie from my Dad's love of the books...and yes she is exactly how I pictured her.

5. Does Rosie make a convincing bar maid?

Ah, yes she is lovely.

I love Rosie [In reply to] Can't Post

I think Sarah was a very good choice for Rosie, because she looks a lot like a hobbit and had nice chemistry with Sean. Whereas her role in the movies is very different from her role in the books, I thought it was effective. Who doesn't start bawling at the end when Sam remembers her in the end? -sniff-

As far as being a bar maid, I think she was meant for it ;D. In the book I felt she was tough and a bit sassy.

He got the look! [In reply to] Can't Post

The first time I saw Minas Tirith I thought, "Boy, I can hardly wait to see inside that place!" I was not disappointed!

The first time I saw Minas Morgul I thought, "Boy, I can hardly wait to see inside that place!" I was disappointed that I didn't get to. I wonder what they would have done with that!

I thought Rosie was just terrific! What I really like is that quick little smile she gives Sam. Every time I see it in the first movie and the last movie I say, "See, Sam got the smile. He got the look!" Sly

I was dying to see inside Minas Morgul! I got an idea from the scene where the Witch King is shown while his servants dress him up, armor him, etc. I have played the scene hundreds of times with pausing at each detail. Unfortunately, it is so short and the background is not focused and blurry. Frown

Lovely caps! [In reply to] Can't Post

It just occurred to me that the first two images are very John Howe: the glowering skies, the green light, the drama of the moment. I don't strongly remember seeing this for the first time, as Orthanc was so much more of a presence. Anyway, the next shot across the cupola'd roofs did remind me of that city in Star Wars...

Rosie is really great here. In the book, Sam and Rosie are childhood friends, I think here we get the idea that he admired her from afar for a long time and felt very shy. She does really exude authority with a smile here, as people said before: every inch the publican's daughter!

'Und das liebe Maedchen sagt
Allen eine gute Nacht!'

('And the lovely girl bids good night to everyone'; implying resentment at being sent away without a personal goodbye. I thought that quote fitted, it's from the 'Schoene Muellerin' (The beautiful miller's daughter), a poem/song cycle about a young journeyman miller falling fatally in love with the Master's daughter. Well anyway....)

Rain may fall and wind may blow
And many miles be still to go
But under a tall tree I will lie
And watch the clouds go sailing by.

As a movie firster... [In reply to] Can't Post

...I didnt have the slightest idea of what these places are. I'm just in awe of the sheer grandeur of this quick 'montage'.

I thought these are just generic settings. It made me excited on what they will show on the next few hours. The close up of Minas Tirith just before Gandalf was shown walking on its streets reminded me of the Queen Amidala's palace in Naboo.

Ahhh, yes -- great memories! [In reply to] Can't Post

I vividly remember attending FotR for the first time, still skeptical about whether this guy named Jackson could possibly have done justice to my favorite book. Unfortunately, I threw my back out making the bed that morning, and so hobbled off to the theater distracted by pain.

But as soon as Galadriel's words started the movie I realized all was going to be well. And it was during this scene, when we see the Nazgul thundering out of Minas Morgul, that I was so totally and thoroughly hooked that my back stopped hurting. Seriously. Until then I'd been twitching around in my seat, never mind my enjoyment of the movie, but at that scene, no more. My husband the Gaffer can testify that at that moment I went immobile until Frodo and Sam walked off toward Mordor.

I loved that first glimpse of Minas Tirith, and for a moment my mind cast itself ahead, to RotK.

As for Rosie, I was a bit surprised to see her running the pub, but hey, making her a capable and charming businesswoman worked well for me. And Sarah is just right, physically -- beautiful and yet "down-home" at the same time.

I had read and/or seen almost no spoilers for FotR, so everything took me by (pleasant) surprise. Then I found my way here to TORn, so neither TT nor RotK sneaked up on me quite the same way. I've never decided whether this is a good or a bad thing!
