"The Rohan" - anyone noticed this in the DVD commentary?

I've recently sat down and watched all the extended editions, extra docos & commentaries for the first time in a while and amidst all the joy of revisiting LOTR again I just kept noticing one thing that irritated me no end: everyone, whether it be the cast or the design team or the crew or whoever, seems to refer to the Rohirrim, as a people, as "The Rohan". Which is equivalent to saying "The Australia" to refer to us down-under folks. ;) So I wonder if this means it was down that way in the script? Surely the Tolkien language experts they employed would have noticed it and pointed it out to Philippa and Fran? It strikes me as very odd that where most of the cast and crew have got the details right about most other things in the production, they seem to get this one uniformly wrong. Has anyone else noticed it or is it just me being anal?!

... especially when Richard Taylor was describing all the different types of armour designs for "the Rohan". It did make me sit up and wonder why so many of them kept saying it like it was a normal thing, butt hen I just passed it off and thought it must've been one guy/gal who used it so frequently that everyone else just picked it up and used it off-handedly I agree it was initially a lil' annoying but after a while it had me laughing to see all of them passionately describe all the little details about "the Rohan" Anyway, I don't suppose I've welcomed you to TORn yet, so WELCOME!!
Crows and Gibbets! What is the House of Eorl but a thatched barn where brigands drink in the reek and their brats roll around on the floor with the dogs? You are but a lesser son of greater sires!

The one that's always bothered me in the commentaries is when various people refer to a single Mumak as a "Mumakil." Geek? Who, me?

Thanks Earl! I used to post here years and years ago before the films came out, but haven't been around since then so I think my old account went inactive. Its good to be back! Glad someone else picked up on it too. :)

I work on a lot of short-term projects, and usually a sort of in-house vocabulary develops -- "the big book" is the binder you need to keep checking, "the red brochure" is a particular document you need to quote from a lot, etc. Sometimes, too, somebody just labels something with a silly name and it catches on -- like "the doctors" became a nickname for our co-chairs once, which was a lot easier than saying both of their names every time. No one ever plans it, it just naturally happens -- I guess because those kinds of "shorthands" are really helpful when you have groups of people working on something with a short deadline. My guess is sometime, somebody on the film team said -- "hey, go get us some Rohans", or something like that, and it just stuck because Rohans was easier to say than Rohirrim all the time. It does sort of stand out though when you listen to the commentaries, I agree! Welcome to the LOTR Movie Board and glad you've finally got a chance to watch all the extras and commentaries! If you want to talk about the films, and all the interesting behind-the-scenes things, well, you've come to the right place. Pull up a chair and make yourself at home!

But here's what I found in the appendix: "The people of that region had become few since the Plague, and most of those that remained had been slaughtered by the savage Easterlings. Cirion, therefore, in reward for his aid, gave Calenardhon between Anduin and Isen to Eorl and his people; and they sent north for their wives and children and their goods and sealed in that land. They named it anew the Mark of the Riders, and they called themselves the Eorlingas; but in Gondor their land was called Rohan, and its people the Rohirrim (that is, the Horse-lords). Thus Eorl became the first King of the Mark, and he chose for his dwelling a green hill before the feet of the White Mountains that we're the south-wall of his land. There the Rohirrim lived afterwards as free men under their own kings and laws, but in perpetual alliance with Gondor."

Was it Lawrence M. who kept referring to the fell beasts as the Nazgul? Something like "the Witch King on his Nazgul" or some such phrase.

I guess because those kinds of "shorthands" are really helpful when you have groups of people working on something with a short deadline. Yes, that's how it struck me too. Like the guys on the design teams or whatever weren't too worried about achieving geek-level Tolkien accuracy - their focus was elsewhere, and they weren't afraid to make up terms that worked for them (like the way they used "fell beast" as if that was the actual name of the creatures, rather than just one of the phrases Tolkien used to describe them!). I kind of liked the fact that we got to see what it's really like behind the scenes, rather than having the mistakes edited out. It was interesting to see that different levels of geekiness existed in the company, with everyone working at the level that was appropriate for their own job. No inaccuracies made it into the movies, but clearly inaccuracies were not seen as a problem for the behind-the-scenes guys. The overall impression was of Peter Jackson as a very inclusive director who doesn't sweat the small stuff, and lets his various creative teams work in the way that's most comfortable for them.

some tech groups or players (etc) would have their own tech-talk that they understood between themselves. The Rohan instead of Rohirrim or in some cases Rohirric Nazgul instead of Fell Beast SCHmegol instead of Smeagol (Peter says SCH all the time) Pronunciations of Tolkien/Tolkin/Theoden/Thehhodin/GaLADriel/GALuhdree-L... etc. It's distracting, fersher ;)
