I won't steal Doug's "thunder". Just head over to his blog.
Crows and Gibbets! What is The House Of Eorl but a thatched barn where brigands drink in the reek, and their brats roll around on the floor with their dogs! You are but a lesser son of greater Sires.

Wow...just....WOW. This is a real "Howe" project, that's for sure! Interesting choice for an illustration, but then, that's right up his alley! So are we going to get Alan Lee or someone else to do a "Beauty of the Ainur" illustration too? So many times I have read those passages and thought of Shore's work. it all fits!

Doug has announced at his blog that John Howe is creating an original illustration for Doug's upcoming book, "The Music of the LOTR Films". Doug writes that Howe's "Melkor's Theme"...
(is) a stunning work -- a vortex of detail that exposes layers of details and nuance with each viewing. Here Howe has depicted, for the first time that I'm aware, the face of Melkor and the fury of his contact with a dawning world.
Although "Melkor's Theme" will join film stills, photography of recording sessions and musical examples as the only original illustration in the book, Doug does add that another guest contributor to the book will be announced in the coming weeks. You can catch a teasing glimpse of Howe's first draft of this new illustration in Doug's blog entry. Doug's book is due out in the fourth quarter this year although the plan is to make it available early to those attending the FOTR Live! Symphony at Radio City Music Hall in October. The book will be released in conjunction with Warner Brothers Rarities Archive, a collection of music that was composed for The Lord of the Rings, but not used. Included are early computer-generated mockups, alternate compositions, etc. More info:

A little apart the Rangers sat, silent, in an ordered company, armed with spear and bow and sword. They were clad in cloaks of dark grey, and their hoods were cast now over helm and head....There was no gleam of stone or gold, nor any fair thing in all their gear and harness: nor did their riders bear any badge or token, save only that each cloak was pinned upon the left shoulder by a brooch of silver shaped like a rayed star.

The Music of the Ainur is one of my favorite of Tolkien's creations. I can't wait to see how Mr. Howe expresses it visually.
