Well, I'm Back

Okay, I've been back since Sunday, but I've been getting back into my groove. The boat trip with Dad was awesome! I learned to sail. Go me! Actually realized that I'm pretty decent at it. At night, I would go back to my Sailing for Dummies book to see what I did wrong. And it seemed that I did most things right. I also managed to avoid getting severe sunburn. Pretty impressive, considering how ghostly white I've been. Lots of SPF 48. Lots. Unfortunately, halfway through the trip, a major cold front moved through the area. We went from unseasonably warm weather in the 80s to record low temperatures. Highs in the 40s, lows in the 20s. Brrrrr. Only two days were really bad. But we hadn't planned for it to be that cold. I didn't even have gloves. I had to wear socks on my hands. Makes for a pretty ridiculous story. "Hey Dad, remember when we were on the boat and it got sooooo cold?" I think the best was sailing along with my Maui CD playing. It just felt so vacation-y. The only thing that could have made it better was a pina colada. But that would have made the sailing dangerous. We didn't get around to listening to the Lord of the Rings audiobooks. Dad didn't seem to excited about it. So we stuck to Jimmy Buffett and the relaxing sounds of Maui. There was a day of celtic music, too. Over all, the trip was fantastic. I learned quite a bit about general boating. Came back with a bit of a tan (and more freckles). And lots of pictures. I put some on flickr. Hopefully I can get the link to work. Pictures!

Infact I may have convinced my Grandfather to take me one of these days. His boat is similar to yours except it is a bit older in style, with a similar indoor cabin, albeit seemingly cramped. And the photos you took of the sailboat itself were very pretty. Your dad has a very nice boat I might add! On a side note the docking berth you left reminded me of the Black Gate in LotR for some reason! I guess I was suprised since I just assumed much larger ships would port there. Anyway, my uncle has my Grandfather's sailboat and he's restored it. And from what I hear he's also re-named it too. Not sure If I am very happy about it. (From Win'dancer to Tootse" Which makes it sound like we went from mastering the wind to just "passing wind". But he did make her sea worthy again and I guess that is what matters. Here's hoping we may actually go out some day! Thank you for sharing your experience with us namadriel

Now that would be exciting, to me - to sit there, and have the boat lifted up as the water rose! Glad you took extreme precautions for blocking the sun - it's much more intense out on the water. You got hit with that cold front, also! Did you encounter any ice? Jimmy Buffet and celtic music - now there's good "travelling music"! I'm glad you two had a wonderful time together.

Seems quite amazing and the pictures are great! Thanks for sharing.
No wonder all writers want to direct: one still has to put up with a load of nonsense, but even if wearing two hats (writer and director), there is one under which one is not called a thief and then raped.

We went through three locks: Wheeler, Wilson, and Guntersville. All on the Tennessee River. It's pretty neat to go through locks. You pull in, tie up to a bollard, and wait on the water to rise. There was a crane standing on one of the lock doors, waiting on fish to be forced up to the surface by the water filling the lock. Pretty smart birds. As for the cold, we didn't see any ice. But someone was camping at the last marina we stayed at, and they said they saw snow that night.
