This is in reply to a question by Ainu Laire about the book "The Ring of the Niblung" illustrated by Arthur Rackham. I answered, but I thought it might get lost in the excitement of Fiesta. She wanted to know if the text was available online. I did a search, and not only the text but some of the illustrations are included here:
Ring of the Niblung
This was the book that CS Lewis describes in his autobiography. He wanted it desperately as a boy, and had to save his money to get it. I checked it out of the library when I was a kid, and loved it, but it disappeared out the library and wasn't replaced. For two decades I searched in used book stores, and then through the miracle of the Internet found a copy through Bibliofind. The copy I got was $50 and slightly mildewed, but I put it out in the sunshine and salavaged it. It's one of my book treasures. I'm thrilled that it's online now for everyone to enjoy.

I ran across while looking for illustrations from The Princess and the Goblins.
I also ran across this one during an illustration search

There's also a children's book based on the Volsunga, I found in the library.

I knew about Project Gutenberg, but not Classics Illustrated.
Your analysis of the Volsung Saga raised several points I'd noticed too. When I first read about Turin it was with a definite sense of deja vu. In the opera, the dwarf's name is Mime, very similar to Mim. And of course there's the sword reforged, and the ring, and the unwitting incest... Great essay!
